Granatelli wants turbine

to run as is next year

INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Andy •Granatelli, out tq “set the record straight” on turbine powered racing engines, today staged a news conference with a panel of “experts” reporting on technical questions. Granatelli, on the eve of the conference, said he and his associates “propose to withdraw our own previous offers to handicap our turbocar.” “We will henceforth maintain that the car was designed and built to the exact letter of US AC rules, and we have no - further intention of downgrad-

ing it,” Granatelli said. “We want the right to race it, the way it ran in the 1967 “500” — legally and without restrictions.” Granatelli had called the conference for today after the U.S. Auto Club placed restrictions on turbine engines such as the one Pamelli Jones drove to within 10 miles of victory in this year’s “500.” On Granatelli’s panel of "experts” were himself, astronaut Gordon Cooper, a car owner and builder; Jim Rathmann, Cooper's partner and winner of

Griese signs with Miami Dolphins

BOCA RATON, Fla. UPI — Purdue All America quarterback Bob Griese, Evansville, Ind., Monday signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins of the American Football League.

Griese, the first draft choice of the Dolphins, signed after a brief workout at a Dolphin training camp here.

“We are most happy to have him,” said Joseph Robbie, managing partner of the Dolphins.

Lending Money Is Our Business

Many people use our money to pay bills and to get cash for VACATION. We have money to lend—in large or small amounts —to suit your needs.

The Miami club is beginning its second year in the AFL.

Also getting much attention Monday was another quarterback, Jon Brittenum of Arkansas. the star of the Coaches AllAmerican game Saturday night In Atlanta.

the 1960 Indianapolis race; Jones; Ivan Speer of the Air Research Division of Garrett Corp., and Fred Cowley, chief service engineer of United Aircraft of Canada, Ltd., which produced the Patt & Whitney turbine engine in the car driven by Jones. Granatelli said Monday if any “new burst of ingenuity Is called for, it is up to our competitors to display that ingenuity.” “Such ingenuity is already hard at work,” he said. “It is no secret in racing circles that turbocharged V-8 racing engines, easily capable of 700 horsepower, will be fielded here in 1968. It Is no secret that a practical torque converter racing transmission will be ready for use by all piston enginer cars by 1968.” He tagged as Injustice the banning of turbine engines while “these radical piston engine improvements are put into use.” “What we really seek is an end to all this handicapping of ingenuity,” Granatelli said. “No kind of competition can become static and still be a competition. There can never be a handicap placed on inventiveness and ingenuity in this country, at any rate.”

McElreath hits wall at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Jim McElreath escaped injury when his race car hit the wall during tire tests Monday at the Indian apolis Motor Speedway.

McElreath’s machine spun in the second turn when a throttle spring broke. The car scraped the wall and caused some damage to the racer, although apparently not extensive.

Astronaut Gordon Cooper drove about 25 laps in a car owned by him and Jim Rath-

mann, winner of the 1960 Indianapolis “500.” Cooper’s speeds were as high as 130 mph.

A1 Unser, Cale Yarborough and rookie Jim Malloy also had cars on the track Monday.

STONER!

Sports Action Inc. (SAC), organizers of the tournament, had planned to announce the completion of the eight-man field for the tournament Monday by signing former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson and Jerry Quarry for a quarterfinal bout on Oct. 28. Quarry, however, refused to come to terms. Aileen Eaton of Los Angeles and Don Cargin of Oakland, Calif., are both trying to sign Quarry, and the 22-year-old Californian apparently is holding out for more money. Mrs. Eaton or Chargin will stage the bout in conjunction with SAC if Quarry comes to terms. He is expected to sign this week. “Then Patterson, who fought Quarry to a 10-round draw last month, failed to show up because his private plane ran into trouble on the way to New York and had to turn back to his upstate training camp. Floyd was so late that everybody had left by the time he arrived in a car. Karl Mildenberger, the No. 1 contender for the vacant title who will meet Oscar Bonavena in Frankfurt, Germany, on Aug. 5, made the meeting on time, but he and his manager, Wolfgang Mueller, were served with summonses by a marshal. The summonses alleged that Mildenberger had a prior commitment to meet Quarry. Both Mueller and Mildenberger, who speaks little English and didn't really understand what the $100,000 damage suit was all about, shrugged off the interruption, and an official of SAC caled it “ridiculous.” Ernie Terrell of Chicago and Philadelphian Leotis Martin, two other participants in the tourney, also attended the conference along with WBA President Bob Evans of Louisville, who gave his nodding approval to the proceedings as the tournament plans were outlined by Mike Malitz, president of SAC. Terrell will meet Thad Spencer of San Francisco and Marti will face James Ellis of Louisville in a doubleheader at the Houston Astrodome on Aug. 5. The fights will be shown by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) live on Saturday afternoons on the Wide World of Sports program. The

semifinals are tentatively scheduled for Nov. 11 and Dec. 2, and the cnamplonship bout is scheduled for either January or February at Houston. Malitz said that semifinal pairings won’t be announced until the quarter-final bouts are over.

Indians edge Spokane, 3-1

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — The Indianapolis Indians’ Cisco Carlos pitched a 7-hit 3-1 victory over Spokane Monday night in the first of a four-game series at Vic ton, 7 Field here. The winning run was scored in the fifth inning when Danny Breeden singled, followed by Carlos with a single, and a single by Angel Brovos, driving in Breeden. Cotton Nash of the Indians went out of the game in the eighth inning when he was hit in the head by a pitched ball. Nash was only shaken up, however. The win was the third complete game pitched by Carlos. The Indians meet Spokane in a double - header Wednesday night.

By United Frets International The major league All-Star break could be a blessing in disguise for the toilers in the International League. With officials able to pay a bit more attention to their minor league players during the two-day layover, three LL. ] pitchers clamored to be noticed Monday night. Bill Henry, a Yankee farmhand, issued three-hits as Syracuse shut out Buffalo 3-0 and Jerry Stephenson had the parent Red Sox in smiles as he pitched a six-hitter while Toronto beat Rochester 5-0 in the opener of a double header. Billy Wynn helped Jacksonville to an 8-8 victory over Toledo on a six-hit performance

in the first game of a twin bill Shaun Fitzmaurice hit two homers, good for five runs, ill the Suns’ win. Ronnie Chandler, a 23-year-ol'* righthander, helped his own cause when he hit a two-run homer that gave Toledo a 5-8 nightcap triumph. Rochester ripped Toronto 6-2 in the second game of their

doubleheader, with Bill Rohr,

who came within one out of pitching a no-hitter for Boston earlier this year, taking the loss. Columbus outslugged Richmond 9-7 in the final league game. Each side hit three homers, but the Jets’ connected with more men on base for the difference.

May ban all cigarette adv.

MYRTLE BEACH, S. C. UPI —Federal Communications Commissioners Kenneth Cox suggested Monday that Congress eventually may ban all cigarette advertising. Cox told the annual convention of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association that health warnings on cigarette packages “have had no effect” on the public and self-imposed regulations by the tobacco industry have been a failure. Cox based his information on a report to Congress by the Federal Trade Commission, which urged a strong warning on cigarette packages and in all advertising. The report intimated, Cox said, that stronger measures may be required, perhaps including a ban on all ; cigarette advertising.

According to American League rules, a game scheduled to start at 6 p. m. is a day game; a game slated to start at 6:01 p. m. is a night game.

Nicklaus, the reigning U.S. Open champion and an 11-4 favorite, has already played 72 holes over the barren, 6,995yard, par-72 Royal Liverpool Club layout hard by the Irish Sea but his intense preparation hasn’t changed his pessimistic outlook.
