MONTFAL UPI — Canada’s Centennial Expo ’67 open, the third richest golf tournament in the world, starts tqday with U.S. open champion Jack Nicklaus and leading money-winner Arnold Palmer in their familiar role as co-favorites. The 72-hole chase for the 200,000 Canadian dollars (about $185,000 in U.S. money) is being held on the revamped East End municipal course, a par 35-36-71, 6,600-yard waterless layout that Is one of the most controversial on the tour this year.
Purtzer leads LAFAYUTTE UPI — Paul Purtzer, 18, a college sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., took the early seoood sound lead at the BOth Western Junior golf tournament at Purdue University's North Course Wednesday. In the second day of oompetiHon in the tournament for teenage golfers, Purtzer grabbed the lead after four golfers tied with a par eoore of 71 on Tuesday. Purtzer, with a 74 Tuesday, shot a B under par 66 Wednesday to plaoe him ahead of the field with 140. Ten more boys had accumulated scores of 150 or better after the end of one third of the competition. A rainstorm Wednesday morning dampened the action for awhile, but later play continued on the humid course.
While the tourney has attracted a fine field, most of the visiting pros were less than ecstatic over the flat, poorlyconditioned municipal layout Perhaps RCGA (Royal Canadian Golf Association) governor Peter Bentley expressed it better than most of the more charitable pros were willing to do when he referred to it as “a cow pasture.” The chief complaints were with fairways and the bumpy, spotty greens. “It will be tough to get the ball off these fairways,” said Billy Casper, “and you’ll have to hit a lot of greens here If you hope to score well.” Host pro Damien Gauthier, who redesigned the course and supervised an $800,000 renovation, admitted the course wasn’t up to snuff but added that ‘T think it win be better when they tee off tomorrow.” Gauthier promised the fairways and greens would be trimmed to PGA standards by the 8 am. tee-off time today. Even though the course has been closed since June 2, recent, rains and a bad spring contributed to Municipal’s present condition. Still, just about anybody who is anybody in golf was on
hand.
Only four of the leading 60 money winners (Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Bobby Nichols and Jim Colbert) were missing. Snead and Nichols were late scratches. And only Tom Nieporte among this year’s tournament winners was absent from the chase for the $30,000 first money.
Chisox lead (Continued from Page 7) In the National League, Chicago swept a doubleheader from Pittsburgh, 4-2 and 8-1, Philadelphia edged New York 6-5, Houston beat Atlanta 4-2, San Francisco clubbed St. Louis 9-1 and Los Angeles rallied to edge Cincinnati 7-5. Detroit rallied with four runs in the sixth inning on just one hit—Willie Horton’s two-run, bases-loaded single—to beat Cleveland. It was only the sixth victory in the last 20 games for Detroit. Reliever Orlando Pena walked four hatters to force in a run and Horton then delivered his two-run single in the sixth off George Culver. Righthander Lew Krausse and two relief pitchers combined for a five-hitter and Kansu City capitalized on shoddy New York outfielding to beat the Yanks. Rookie outfielder Bill Robinson misplayed two Bert Campaneris’ line drives—one for a double and another for a two-base error—to set up the
two A’s runs.
Cesar Tovar singled home the tie-breaking unearned run in the seventh as the Twins stopped Boston behind the four-hit, 13-strikeout pitching of Dave Boswell. Tovar’s single followed George Scott’s error and a sacrifice and pinned the loss on
Lee Stange.
Women's golf (Continued from Page 7) Curtis Cuppers Ann Quash Welts, Phyllis Tish Pruess, Helen Sigel Wilson, Nancy Roth Syms and Jean Ashley, along with Shelley Hamlin of Fresno, Calif., and Roberta Albers of Temple Terrace, Fla., were rated as potential threats. With $5,000 going to the winner, and half that amount marked for the runnerup, the meet would have a major bearing on the yearly LPGA money standings. The top six money winners, bunched within about $3,000 of each other, will be on hand. After Friday's play, the field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties for the final 36 holes Saturday.
Pompidou to Russia MOSCOW UPI —French Premier Georges Pompidou will visit the Soviet Union July 3 through July 8, the government announced Wednesday. Pompidou will be accompanied by French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville. Pompidou’s arrival Monday will come only two days after Soviet Premier Alexei N. Kosygin stops over in Paris on his way home to Moscow from Cuba and the United Nations.
Paige unhappy with 'Clowns' BELOIT, Wis. UPI — Leroy (Satchel) Paige Is unhappy traveling with the Indianapolis Clowns comedy baseball team even though he’s making $1,000 a month. Paige said Tuesday night here while appearing for an exhibition game with the Clowns that he is “just an associate member of this organization." “It’s a real crummy one," Paige said. “I don’t even have a place to dress. It’s this way in every town. I’m tired of it. Pm going to tell the world soon what I think about this outfit" Owner Ed Hamman of the Clowns said he wasn’t concerned about Paige’s remarks. He was upset tonight,” Hamman said. “It was just one of those nights. It could happen to anyone.” Paige engaged in a verbal exchange with Clown batters during his one-inning stint on the mound. He gave up five runs before getting anyone out and allowed Bill Parker, the playing manager, to steal home while yelling insults at him.

Gap is "defiance in face of God": Barbara Ward
LAFAYETTE, Ind. UPI — British economist Barbara Ward (Lady Jackson) said here Wednesday that the gap between the wealthy and poor nations of the world is “defiance flung in the face of God.” Miss Ward addressed about 6,000 women attending the triennial national meeting of United Presbyterian Women at Purdue University. “Our world is so lopsided that it is a wonder it is not thrown out of balance," Miss Ward said. “If you look at a globe on the basis of wealth, you will find that it has an enormous bottom and a tiny, little top. And if you look at it on the basis of population, you will find it’s just as unbalanced.” “There is something wrong with wealthy nations that can pump $27 billion additional into Vietnam in one year and cut $1 billion from help for underdeveloped nations,” she said. Miss Ward said Western “assistance” programs are “purely commercial ventures designed to help us. They may wind up helping others but that’s not what they were designed for.” She said greatly increased aid to developing countries would mean that the wealthy Western nations “would just get richer a little more slowly between Christmas and Easter. It’s something like making a lenten sacrifice.” Hie Rev. Kenneth S. Waterman, Kansas City, Mo., a Presbyterian minister who helped from the nation’s first ecumenical parish, said the United States is “a sick nation because we are not interested in the poor."
'There can be no reconciliation in the world unless there is a redistribution of power and wealth,” he said. “Reconciliation does not come from politeness. If you think it does, then scratch the cross from the Christian record.”

The money represents $1.1 billion for the regular first quarter apportionment of highway funds for fiscal 1968 plus $515 million left over from the original $1 billion blocked by Johnson.
