Hoosier All-Stars must improve shooting before traveling to old Kentuck
Indiana’s all-star high school basketball squad will have to find its shooting eye if the Hoosiers hope to snap a fivegame Kentuckj’ winning streak. The current edition of Indiana all-stars hit a chilly .275 from the field Saturday night in losing 79-67 to the Kentuckians in Hinkle Fieldhouse here. Kentucky now has won five straight summer clashes over Indiana during the past three years and shoots for No. 8 Saturday night at Freedom Hall In Louisville. Jim McDaniels, the Bluegrass fcce from Allen County, was unimpressive offensively but he stole the show on the defense boards. McDaniels got only eleven

points for the evenings, far below his 38 point average per game, but his rebounding was a major factor in the Kentucky victory. Kentucky took a 42-29 lead into the dressing room at halftime and for a while threatened to keep piling up the lead as play moved along in the second half. When McDaniels fouled out late in the game, 6-11 Greg Northington of Indianapolis Wood led a brief Indiana rally that brought the Hoosiers to within six points of Kentucky at 67-61. That came with three mintues to play. Indiana had a chance to cut the margin to four points but lost the ball on an error and Kentucky scored to go eight points up.
Jim Rose of Hazard paced the Blue Grass boys with 25 points. Ben Watkins of Louisville Central had 17 and George Montgomery of Louisville Central added 15. Northington paced Indiana
with 15. "Mr. Basketball,” Willie Long of Fort Wayn« South, tallied 14 before fouling out late in the game. The only other Hoosier in double figures was Larry Weatherford of Evansville Bosse with 12.
Falendar leads BLOOMINGTON UPI—Steve Falender, the defending champion, heads the field in this week’s 42nd annual Indiana Junior Golf tournament, slated over the Indiana University course. The qualifying round for the 64 spots open in the championship flight is scheduled today, with two rounds of match play scheduled on each of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jack Nicklaus started “bearing down” as he went into the final round of the National Open Golf Championship by tabulating birdies and winning his second championship with a score of 275. The 27-year-old Golden Bear climaxed his amazing round by knocking in a 30-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a final round of 65. This was his eighth birdie of the day in an individual performance that defied reason and shattered the 19-year-old record of 276 set by Ben Hogan at Los Angeles’ Riviera in 1948. Nicklaus won by four strokes over his long-time friend and chief rival, Arnold Palmer, who finished with a brace of birdies for a 69 and 279. It was a one-man show for the blond, 210-pound slugger from Columbus, Ohio, holder of every major professional title, as the sensational young amateur, Marty Fleckman of Port Arthur, Tex., finally came to earth with a bang. The shy, 23-year-old Walker

Cup alternate, who led the first and third rounds, started with three bogeys and never got out of the dumps and finished with an 80 for 289. Don January, a rangy Dallas veteran of 12 year on the tour, gained third place with an even par 70 for 281. followed by defending champion Billy Casper, who shot a 72 for 282. It was a runaway for Nicklaus from the time he knocked in five birdies in the space of six holes on the outgoing nine until he climaxed his day wtih a dramatic windup on the 542yard, uphill 72nd. There, with Hogan’s record in his sights, he played it cautiously, hitting a one-iron off the tee and playing his second short of the ditch with a seveniron. Then he pitched to the broad, marble-slick green and rolled in the putt that made golfing history. It was a fabulous round for the chubby druggist’s son from Ohio, who beat Palmer in a

playoff for his first Open triumph in his first year as a professional in 1962. The card for the 7,015-yard, par 70 course showed nine 3s, without an eagle. Besides his five outgoing birdies at the third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth holes, Nicklaus canned birds at the 13th, 14th and the 18th. His prodigious drives gave him a tremendous advantage, and he frequently knocked his irons right up the pin, but he also had one of his greatest putting days. He had eight one-putt greens, sinking assignments of 12, 15 and 18 feet in addition to his curling snake on the final hole. His putts on the 13th and 14th were simple ones of five and three feet Nicklaus became infatuated with a center-shafted putter belonging to a friend from Washington, D. C., Fred Mueller, during practice last week and immediately coaxed the friend to part with the blade. Now the putter—a copper blade wtih a white paint on its face—may be destined for the Golf House Museum. "I like it because it gets the ball in the hole,” Nicklaus said. Palmer, the tournament favorite, never got going. Playing with Nicklaus for the second straight day, he could do n» ; more than put up pars white Nicklaus was canning birdies until the 17th hole. Then the Latrobe, Pa., millionaire sank consecutive birdies—his only subpar holes of the round. Hogan, 55, bidding for his fifth Open crown, had finished approximately an hour before Nicklaus reached the final green, but the Texas Hawk realized his proud record was doomed. “I thought several fellows might break the record here,” Hogan said. “The fairways were wide, and the rough wasn't so bad. The greens, however, were very tricky. Nicklaus did a remarkable job.” Hogan finished with a 72 for 292. He had three rounds of 27 and a 76 on Saturday. Nicklaus’ victory was worth $30,000 and put him back into the year’s money race after a rather unproductive season.

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — LaPorte reigns today as Indiana’s first high school baseball champion. The Slicers defeated Indianapolis Arlington 7-5 Saturday afternoon to win the crown in the IHSAA’s first prep baseball tournament. LaPorte erupted for all seven of its runs in the sixth inning after trailing Arlington 5-0. Rich Leonard led the outburst with a double and a triple as the Slicers batted around in the big frame. Leonard started on the mound for LaPorte but moved to the outfield in the third inning. Reliefer A1 Malekovic was the winning pitcher, his second victory of the day and his 15th of the season. Malekovic pitched LaPorte to an 8-2 triumph over Columbia City in the morning round of the state finals while Arlington defeated Jasper 10-1. Arlington had scored a single
run in the first inning and two runs in each of the second and fifth frames before LaPorte staged its rally. The final round of the tourney was played at Victory Field here, the home of the Indianapolis Indians of the Pacific Coast League.
