Unique is the word ATLANTA (UPI) — What has a sidewalk cafe, a threestory birdcage and glass elevators that scale a massive column at the breathtaking speed of 700 feet per minute? Would you believe a hotel? The new $18 million Regency Hayatt House of Atlanta has those features and more. There is a bar on a pedestal. And two plexiglas bubbles that look like flying saucers perched 23 stories above the city. Starting with the ancient idea of the Roman courtyard, Atlanta architect John Portman conceived what owners s..y is “the most exciting and modem new hotel in the country.” Portman says “it is probably the most unusual hotel in the world.” One room deep on all four sides, the hotel is built around a 21-story air conditioned and landscaped courtyard. Each of the 800 rooms opens onto the courtyard, and each has a balcony. Topped by a skylight that will allow the sun to reach six huge Australian umbrella trees planted in the courtyard, the massive column of air is one of the largest enclosed spaces in existence, Portman said. The huge lobby, which looks like anything but a lobby, is a panorama of activity. To the right, five glass, bul-let-shaped elevators hurtle up and down the column, ringed by bright lights so they look like huge mobiles. To the left is a sidewalk cafe. In the center, setting on a pedestal, is the Parasol Cocktail Lounge, roofed by a 15-ton plexiglass and steel umbrella suspended by a steel cable from the bubble top 23 stories above. The steel birdcage based on a lower floor, comes up through the floor of the lounge. The passengers on the silent elevators have a spectacular ride to get to their rooms, esspecifically if they are on an upper floor. The speed of the elevators makes them seem like midway rides. The clear bubble topping the courtyard merely lets in sunlight. The blue bubble on the roof covers the Polaris restaurant, which revolves slowly so that a person can observe the entire skyline without leaving his table. Each room has an exterior balcony overlooking the city and an interior balcony looking over the courtyard. The balconies serve as the hotel’s corridors. The Regency Hyatt House is the first major hotel built in the east by Hyatt Corporation of America, which also has luxury hotels in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Chicago.
The word “automobile” was first used in France in the late 1880s, says World Book Encyclopedia.

ELVIS PRESLEY IN “DOUBLE TROUBLE** NOW PLAYING AT THE VONCASTLE Ask End of Draft Exemption For Ministerial Students NEW HAVEN, Conn. (UPI) —The faculty of Yale University’s Divinity School has asked that draft exemption for ministerial students be abolished. In a resolution adopted unanimously by the 47 faculty members, three reasons were given for the request: (1) “Ministerial students are the only students who are exempt from selective service. On the basis of the principle of equity this is unjust.” (2> “Ministerial alternative to register as conscientious objectors.” (3) “The absence of exemption would face ministerial students with the same moral choice of participation or non-participation that all other men in their ag« groups face.”
ABC Membership Down PORTSMOUTH, N. H. (UPI> —Of all the 14 largest Protestant bodies in the United States only American Baptists lost membership between 1950 and 1965, Carl W. Tiller, president of the American Baptist Convention, told the American Baptist of New Hampshire at their annual meeting here. The other principal denominations gained 31 per cent In this 15-year period, t)r. Tiller said, going from 41,265.000 to 54.050.000. He said American Baptists need to increase both the number and quality of church membership.
