Introducing Cal Ermer as the replacement for fired Twins’ manager Sam Mele Friday night, Griffith said that no one thing caused Mele’s dismissal. “It’s rather an accumulation,” he said. The apparent split in the coaching staff last October that saw coaches Johnny Sain and Hal Naragon go to Detroit, Griffith said, was not the reason Mele was fired, but it was clear it contributed.

The Twins have been plagued by missing signs, inferior baserunning. and a lack of the “thinking baseball” this year. “At one time last year, I had something in mind, but things turned around and we started winning,” Griffith said. Hie last half of 1966, the Twins were the hottest team in baseball, steaming at a .643 clip after July 4. Mele’s record as a manager was good. The Twins won the 1965 American League pennant, and Mele also managed them to two seconds, a third, a tie for sixth, and a seventh-place finish in 1961, after taking over in mid-stream from Cookie Lava get to. Hie overall record is

In Griffith’s mind, however, he did not get the most out of the players.

It was immediately obvious to declarer that normal play would lead to down one, so he initiated a method

of play that gave him a chance for the contract. He won the trump lead in dummy and led a low heart, losing the queen to the king. Of course. West could have ended the matter then and there by returning a heart,- hut he innocently led another trump in-

stead.

This eventually proved fatal when South proceeded to execute a squeeze against East He drew three more rounds of trumps and cashed three spade tricks, ending in his hand to produce this position:

San Diego, Calif., Sept. 24. J. Lee Schoenith, chairman of the APBA’s Unlimited 1967 will be one of the best and most exciting years for the sport Schoenith, president of Gale Enterprises, which sponsors Gale’s Roostertail, sajs the group’s new craft is of revolutionary design. “Instead of the usual threepoint, air suspension hull, our hydroplane will have a fourpoint. treme 13-foot. 2-inch beam and powered bj' a 3.000 horsepower Rolls Royce Merlin, will be driven by Billy Schumacher of Seattle, a veteran of limited hydro-

pane class racing.

When South now led the seven of trumps and discarded a heart from dummy, East found it impossible to discard successfully. As a result, South

made the slam.

Although a good ease can be made for West to return a heart at-trick three instead of a trump, this does not detract from the credit due South for his well - conceived effort to make the contract. Larceny of this type is & legitimate part of the game, and all that South really did was to implement his

license to steal.

Among others making their mailden appearances will be Notre Dame, Miss U. S. and Gale’s Roostertail. all three of which, like Miss Bardahl, will be replacing boats damaged or destroyed in last year’s campaigning. The big boats, many of which hit speeds up to 200 mile per hour on the straightawaj’, will point for nine events this season under sanction of the American Power Boat Association. At stake will be $274,000 in prize money and points for the coveted title of National Champion. The season kicks off Sunday, June 11, with running of the $25,000 Suncoast Cup at Tampa, Fla., and winds up Oct. 1 at Sacramento. Calif., with the $25,000 Sacramento Cup. Among new products of interest to boatmen is a liquid vinjd which forms a tough, continuous and non-porous skin over either ferrous or non-fer-rous metals. Treated surfaces are completely sealed and guarded against the corrosive action of salt water and extreme weather conditions. The vinyl is ready to brush on when it comes out of the can. It adheres tightly to metal parts of all sizes and shapes and cannot harden, crack or blister. The coating can be lifted with a fingernail and

peels off in one piece.

Among numerous uses are protection of a boat’s metal surfaces during storage periods, coating of non-working parts of tools to prevent rusting, coating of food cans aboard to prevent rusting and loss of labels while cruising, and whipping of rope ends which is accomplished simply by dipping the end of

the line in the can.

Known as “Peel Away,” the product is manufactured by Marine Development A Research Corp., New York.
