(By ARNOLD DIBBLE) TOKYO UPI — Britain, as reflected by her newspapers at least, appears to be having second thoughts about doing business with Red China. Britain’s troubles in Hong Konk, Macao and Red China also would seem to furnish cause for pause for U. S. advocates of recognition of the confusing giant of the Asian mainland. The humiliation of her majesties representatives in Shanghai, Peking and Macao represented a major blow to any hope that Britain and Red China can do business in any normal manner for some time to come. glue and kicked and dragged by Red Guard demonstrators in Shanghai; British consul Norman Ions was forced to stand in the sun in Macao for seven hours. The British mission in

Peking was harrassed.

As a result several British newspepers questioned the value of maintaining diplomatic relations with what many consider the << mad man” nation of

the Orient.

For Britain the trail in China has been difficult ever since the Communists came to power in 1949. It has been a case of Britain rushing in with a diplomatic recognition and never quite receiving recognition in

return.

Britain recognized the Red Chinese regime diplomatically on Jan. 6, 1950, and immediately proposed an exchange of ambassadors. To this day, Mao Tse-tung’s government has not agreed to an exchange of top level diplomats, each being represented by lower officials. Against thinly disguised American disapproval, Britain defended Its action on the ground it had to do its best to protect its substancial investments and businesses. Britain’s trade with Red China is small about $150million a year both ways, exclusive of Hong Kong where China clears about $500-million a year in open trading and perhaps that much more in hidden trading. The facile quality of British diplomacy, however, is one of the wonders of the Far East Britain fought against the Red Chinese in Korea and managed to maintain diplomtic relations; it also has managed to keep a foothold on the other side of the fence in— Taiwan where it maintains consular relations with the Nationalist government. How long it will continue to take it in Red China and Hong Kong depends, it would seem, upon the quality and quantity of British patience.

meeting was called to order by the president, Tonya Harris. The pledge to the American flag was led by Terri Jo Walker and the 4-H pledge was led by Joan Zimmerman, Ruthie Miller and Pat Samsel led the group in singing and the secretary’s report was read and approved. Program books were passed out and the dates of the judging contest, private dress review demonstration contest, and the fair were discussed. Marie McKee then lead the club in recreation. Following a demonstration given by Carolyn Torr, refreshments were served and the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held on June 19 at 10:30 in the Vocational Building.
