ture of Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. In Lacrosse, Wis., early today a deluge of heavy rain continued in the wake of marblesized hail that knocked out power in much of the city and left a trail of damage. Hail was reported piled up to six inches high late Thursday night, and hundreds of trees in Lacrosse were felled by the storm and high winds. Water was reported at least two feet deep in the streets, and road travel was considered dangerous. The fury of the storm knocked a Lacrosse radio station off the

air.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were posted for parts of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle in a radius around the Nebraska storm

center.

Rain and thunderstorms were scattered across much of the nation today, in the Plains, the north and central Rockies, northern New England and

Florida.

Only the South enjoyed generally clear weather, though in pockets across the Midwest the summer’s first siege of belated sunshine was undiminished.

Arab Students In Demonstration By United Press International MOSCOW UPI—Hundreds of screaming Arab students marched on the American embassy today and thousands of Soviet soldiers and police moved in to protect the build-

ing.

The students, protesting alleged American aid to Israel in the Middle East war, encountered the heaviest defenses ever thrown up around a foreign mission in Moscow. The embassy rang down its steel riot protection shutters as the students neared. Thousands of unarmed Soviet soldiers and hundreds of police were on hand. Near the embassy a solid line of plainclothes Soviet agents formed a last line of defense. In the street outside, 30 big waterspraying trucks took up positions. CONTRACT BRIDGE By B. Jay Becker (top Record-Holder in'Masters' Individual Champion ship May) BIDDING QUIZ

You are the dealer, neither side vulnerable, and have opened the bidding with One Spade. Partner responds Three Spades. What would you bid now with each of the following five

hands?

1. +AQ72 VAKJ8 +92 +863 2. +KQ63 VQJ5 +QJ7 +A94 3. +KQ942 «AQ +75 +AQ84 4. +A98752 +4 +AQJ3 +A10 5. +KQJ6 +KQ95 +KQJ2 +7 1. Four spades. There should be no reluctance about contracting for game. Partner indicates a hand worth 13 to 15 points in support of spades. It would be wrong to bid four hearts in an effort to find a better trump suit because partner might interpret this as expressing interest in a slam. We cannot afford to do this with a minimum

opening bid.

2. Three notrump. This bid gives partner a choice between playing the hand in spades or notnunp. Nine tricks might prove easier to make than ten if partner’s hand is also the

notnunp type.

Partner will usually return to spades because of distributional features he has which make the play for game in a suit more attractive, but he may pass

with a balanced hand.

. , , ,, . . 3. Four clubs. Here we should Khpsch reported the goal of 50 announce at least a mild interLife Members had been reached, est in a slam. If partner has the

right hand, the slam may be laydown. The chief danger spot

lies in diamonds. The opponents may have the A-K of diamonds even with partner having a maximum three spade bid. The four club bid gives partner the opportunity to cuebid diamonds. This method of pinpointing strength is superior in the present deal to the use of Blackwood to learn how many aces partner has. He may easily have a hand with one ace that provides twelve sure tricks, or a hand with two acaa but no possibility of twelve tricks. 4. Six spades. Whatever values partner has, whether In the form of high cards, distribution, or a combination of both, it is highly unlikely that two tricks will be lost. No ceremonies are necessary. You bid what you think you can make. 5. Four notrump. With all tha powerful intermediate cards wa have in three suits, it seems highly possible that partner may have three aces for his jump to three spades. This possibility should be Investigated. If partner’s response to the Blackwood bid is five spades, showing three aces, we carry on willingly to six. If the response is five hearts, showing two aces, we stop at five

spades.

Some people insist that a player with no aces cannot initiate the Blackwood convention. There is very little merit to such a theory. A slam Is a slam — even if one player has no

aces.

Horticultural Tips Sycamore Anthracnose: This disease is caused by a fungus which “overwinters” in the buds and small cankers in many hardwood trees. Its development is favored by cool, wet spring weather. With spring rains, fungus spores are washed into the opening buds and infect the young leaves. The first visible symptoms are the sudden browning of individual leaves or clusters of leaves. If the spring weather remains cool and wet, most of the leaves - ■ 1 — are brown by May. These leaves

fall to the ground, and the tree remains bare until late summer when a new crop of leaves is formed. Small twigs are also attacked and killed. In addition to spoiling the beauty of trees and shrubs this disease seriously weakens the tree over the years so that it becomes easy prey to many other troubles, particularly drought injury. Control: Spray with any of the following fungicides at the Mfr’s suggested rate: Bordeaux mixture; Puratized Agricultural Spray; Tag 331; or Captan. Make the first application when the buds are breaking and continue application at 10 to 14 day intervals until 3 or 4 sprays have been made. Request Bulletin BP 2-1.
