Several called Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Burkett as it was their 64th wedding anniversary.. They were very pleased that their daugh-ter-in-law, Mrs. Howard Burkett was able to be present for the occasion. Howard and son, Richard were also present. Mrs. Edward Englehart of Gary, was a weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Caywood and visited her mother «t the Putnam County Hospital. Mrs. Myrtle Boatman, mother of Mrs. Englehart and Mrs. Caywood expects to be released from the hospital Monday June 6th. Mrs. Violet Bennet and Mrs. Enola Clodfelter shopped in CrawfordsvUle Saturday after-
noon. Recent callers of Mrs. Russell O’Haver were Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Call of Greencastle and Stanley Scobee who is home on furlough. Stanley is in the Navy and left Sunday for Pearl Harbor. Mr. and Mrs. Vem Sigler called on Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Shonkwiler Saturday evening and Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Brattain Thursday evening. Mrs. Don Jefferies and children near Bainbridge and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cropelack and children of Ohio were Saturday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Barker and family. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Call visited the cemetery at CrawfordsvUle Sunday afternoon and called on
Mr. and Mrs. Max Call and family near Roachdale. Mr. and Mrs. David Stevens and famUy of St Louis, Mo., were Saturday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Stevens and daughter, Judy. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Evans of Lebanon were also Saturday evening callers. Memorial Day dinner guests of Mrs. RusseU O’Haver were Mr. and Mrs. Morris Irwin and Mrs. Aileen Overstreet. Mr. and Mrs. Gale O’Hair attended the graduation exercises at Purdue University Sunday of their son, Michael. He received a B.S. degree from the school of Technology in Industrial Education. Hubert McGaughey accompanied a group of men from Bainbridge to High Point, North Carolina, to bring back eight school buses for the North Putnam School organization. They left last Friday and returned Sunday. Michael Janson of Rockford, HI., is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mm. Wayne Bettis.
38th Division Begins Training INDIANAPOLIS UP1 — The annual two-week field training exercises begin June 10 at Camp Grayling, Mich., for mom than 6,000 Indiana National Guardsmen of the 38th Infantry Division. The exercises will include more than 2,500 military vehicles, traveling along routes U.S. 27 and U.S. 131. Indiana Guardsmen later will be joined by 1,000 IndianaMichigan Army Reservists, according to Maj. Gen. Noble F. Schlatter, commanding general at the 38th. The 9,000-man force will be participating in the first brig-ade-level exercises that have ever been conducted at Camp Grayling. The event will be the first exercise on a brigade level of Indiana National Guardsmen since World War n. The main body of Guardsmen will complete maneuvers by June 25.

One of her first customers was a crewcut young man with a “bulge” under his jacket who handed her a note reading, “don’t make me shoot anyone.’’ Mrs. Puleikis gave him 31,325 and he walked calmly out the branch’s rear exit.
NAACP Announces Gary Demonstration
GARY UPI—The Gary branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People announced plans for a demonstration at the Porter County Courthouse in Valparaiso June 17 as a protest of the acquittal of a white man for killing a Negro in a Chesterton tavern. “The NAACP feels that it was
not simply Droke that killed Ivey but the dual systems of our total society which separates the races and denies black men justice, Mississippi style,” the organization said in a news release. Harvey Gene Droke, formerly of Tennessee, was freed last month by a jury in Porter Circuit Court on charges of mur-
der in the gun death of Marvin Ivey, a Gary Negro. Droke’s attorneys claimed self defexise. The NAACP called the verdict a “gross and grave miscarriage
of justice.”
The Rev. William A. Paris, president of the branch, said plans for the demonstration would be worked out in Gary
