Mantle Slugs 508th Epstein Hits First

For Mantle it was routine, for Epstein it was ecstasy and for the Yankees It was a question mark. The two sluggers met for the first time at Yankee Stadium Monday night and each contributed a homer. Mantle his 508th career blast leading oft the eighth that won the ballgame 42, and rookie Epstein his first major league round tripper that gave the Senators an early 2-0 lead. Mantle, who said he was tired after playing a doubleheader on Sunday, explained that he was just trying to hit the ball His winning blow, a line drive into the right field stands, came while he was hitting righthanded against reliever Darold Knowles. Epstein, who has been the most controversial figure in baseball since he refused to report to the minor leagues a few weeks ago, was appearing in his first game as a Washington Senator since coming from Baltimore. The excited first baseman said. "It was a real thrill playing my first start where Gehrig once stood and where Mantle still stands. It gave me a thrill I considered It a real privilege. In other American League action, Minnesota tripped Cleveland 5-4, Detroit nipped Kansas City 3-2 and California downed Baltimore 3-2. Chicago and Boston were not scheduled. In the National League, Chicago bombed Philadelphia 18-

3, Houston defeated St. Louis 5-2, and Los Angeles beat Atlanta 4-2. Thad Tillotson raised his record to 3-0 as he allowed the Senators only six hits, two by Epstein. After Epstein had given Washington a 2-0 lead with his homer, Tom Tresh tied the game with a two-run blast off starter Frank Bertaina. The Yankees added their final run on Bill Robinson’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Steve Bailey’s wild pitch with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed Cesar Tovar to score from third base with the winning run. Norm Cash’s long double off the right field screen drove in Jim Northrup from first base in the 11th inning to give the league leading Tigers a game and a half lead over the idle White Sox. tMck Green had tied the game for the A’s in the ninth when he tripled and scored as Al Kalina hobbled the ball in the outfield. Denny McLain went all the way to even his record at 6-8. Bill Kelso pitched one-hit ball over the last five innings to gain his third win in four decisions. TTie Angels scored all their runs in the third inning When Bob Rodgers singled, Bobby Knoop doubled and Jose Cardenal singled. Jim Fregoei banged into a force play to enable the final run to score. Paul Blair had given the Orioles an early lead with a first inning homer.

The Cheater - Finished?

Racing favorite and winner of the 1967 Memorial Day Indianapolis 500 Mile Race A. J. Foyt called the racing car above a “cheater” and the builder of the sleek orange classic Andy Granatelli said he would have “ten cheaters at the 500 next year.” The question as to whether the turbine powered car or racers designed like it should be permitted to compete with cars that have conventional engines will probably be discussed at length today when the directors of the United States Auto Club convene in Indianapolis. The board convenes today and remains in session through Wednesday for their regular meeting and while no decision was expected on the turbine matter there is bound to be a lot of attention focused on the subject. The car pictured above was driven by Parnelli Jones in this year’s 500 Mile Race and finished sixth after leading the race 197 laps when a gearbox went out.

Clark's Lotus Is One to Beat

ZANDVOORT, Holland UPI— The spectacular success of Jim Clark’s new Ford-powered Lotus, Which made a winning debut in Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix, raised Speculation today that the ear may be the one to beat in future Formula One events. “With the right man behind the wheel and no major troubles, that car can take on all comers,” a Zandvoort track official commented after Clark cruised home at a record 168.087 kilometers an hour, nearly 24 seconds ahead of Jack Brabham in his Repco-Brabham. “It would not surprise me to see a Ford racing team on the circuits in a couple of years,” the official said. Britain’s Clark took the lead after 16 laps of the 90-lap, 377.4-kilometer event and was never challenged. Brabham drove steadily to average 167.5 k.p.h. in second place, followed by New Zealander Denis Hulme and Britain's Chris Am on driving one of the three Ferraris entered in the event Only 10 of the 17 starters finished the race — third event counting toward the world driving championship. Clark’s win gave him $2,000 in prize money and nine points towards the world championship. He is now third behind Monaco Grand Prix winner Hulme, with Rodriguez, winner in South Africa, with 11.
