By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD UPI — When ihe Statue of Liberty was erected with its legend, “give me your tired, your poor . . . the wretched refuse of your teeming shore," did it mean the Beatles, Twiggy, the Rolling Stones. Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Harris? England has been exporting all sorts to this country in the past few years, most with shaggy hair who proceed to return

to Britain with tons of greenbacks. At long last Blighty has sent us a clean-shaven, wellgroomed, sober and articulate specimen named Roger Moore, perhaps for shock value. Though bom in London, Moore is suspect. He neither hates 1 Americans nor rails on about our participation in Vietnam. To all appearances he is a traitor to his fellow Britons. Yet among them all he is the

number one star of television not only in Britain but behind. the Iron Curtain as well—Yugoslavia, Rumania, Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia. He also is tops in Germany, Portugal and Spain by his own

account.

The reason for this can be seen Sunday nights this summer on NBC-TV’s “The Saint,” based on the old Leslie Charteris trav- ! eler-adventurer. In all, 101 episodes of “The Saint” have been shot, but this summer’s fare will consist of only 17 in color. Previously the series was syndicated in about 100 American cities.

Moore’s show will be one ot| the very few all new series available on the tube this summer. Should it gather respectable ratings it may pop up next January or sooner to replace one of the new fall shows when the network ax drops. "All of the show was filmed in England and Europe,” said the Englishman. “It is pure Robin Hood formula, modern and well dressed. I suppose that is another reason it appeals to

East Europeans.

“Our ratings were very good in syndication here. And I think we’re the first show ever to go j from syndication to network i

broadcasting. That speaks rather well for it, doesn’t it. “And as for my appearance, I mean clean shirt, short hair and all the rest of it, I rather feel like a Benedict Arnold in reverse.”

RICHMOND HAS NEGRO MAJORITY RICHMOND, Va. (UPI) — A study by the University of Virginia reveals that the population of Richmond, which was the capital of the Confederacy, is 51 per cent Negro. The city’s total estimated population is

250,000.

BOTTLE BABIES NEW YORK UPI—Americans are bottle babies. The average U. S. citizen each year eats, drinks or gargles the contents of 400 bottles and jars, according to the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute. That means the United States is annually emptying about 80 billion bottles and jars. About 1,400 bottles and jars each year enter the average American home. GCMI reports more glass bottles and jars are used in the United States than any other rigid container. About 30 billon new glass containers were used in 1966. The other

50 billion trips were made by returnable beer, soft drink and milk bottles.

HOW’S THAT AGAIN ? ST. LOUIS UPI—Dr. Stanford Wessler, physician-in-chief of the Jewish Hospital of St Louis announced a grant by the National Heart Institute for research "in the role of stasis and lipids in venous thrombosis.” Wessler said the aims of the investigation are to determine in what manner clotting proteins, lipids and vascular stasis contribute to thrombogenesis in veins.

| BINGO’S FOR GIRL I LONDON (UPI) — Boy or girl? Beatle Ringo Starr, whose wife Maureen is expecti -'j their second child in August, says he isn’t particular “but since our first was a boy a girl would be nice this time.” The son, bom in 1966, is named Zak.
