Indiana Traffic Toll Mounting By United Pren International Indiana’s worst traffic accident of 1967 killed four persons on a treacherous highway in Lake County Sunday night and sent the state’s Memorial Day holiday weekend toll soaring to at least nine. The weekend fatalities, running on the schedule of the Indiana Office of Traffic Safety when it estimated 19 would die during the holiday period, raised the year’s total deaths to at least 485 compared with 577 a year ago. The four-fatality accident happened on deadly U.S. 41 in Cedar Lake at 9:35 p.m. EST. Wet pavement from drenching rain was blamed. Mrs. Sally Jablonski, 46, Cedar Lake, was driving along the four-lane highway when a car in front of her slowed for a left turn. She applied the brakes and the car skidded on the rain-slippery pavement, crossed the center line and hit broadside a car driven by William Thorne, Sr., 53, Cedar
Lake.
Killed were Mrs. Jablonski; Thorne’s wife, Helen, 48; Gregory Hausman, 13, and his brother Charles, 8, Schererville, nephews of Mrs. Jablonski. Thorne was injured critically and taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond. His son, William, Jr., 12, was hurt seri-
ously.
Previously this 'year, a dozen triple-fatality wrecks had occurred in Indiana but none had taken as many as four lives. A few hours earlier, on Sunday afternoon, two 18-year-old Indianapolis girls who were graduated from Chartrand High School only the night before, were killed when their car crashed into a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train at a crossing on the Indianapolis south side. They were Karen Maher, 18, and Carol Ann Nugent, 18. Witnesses told police the crossing flasher signals were working just before the accident. Fred R. Carter, 25, New Castle, was killed Saturday night in New Castle when his motorcycle was struck by a car at an intersection. Earlier in the w e e k e n d, James Messer, 24, Stilesville, and Ernest Honegger, 69, Plymouth, were killed. Messer was hit by a car while running across U.S. 40 near Stilesville early Saturday and Honegger was crushed beneath his overturned farm tractor after a collision with a car on
a Kosciusko County road near Mentone Friday night. Frederick Vanator, 48, Warsaw, died Sunday from injuries suffered last Tuesday in a twocar collision on Indiana 15 south of New Paris. Claude Malone, 85, Dana, died Saturday in a hospital at Clinton from injuries suffered Friday in a two-car collision on Indiana 63 near Clinton in which his wife, Grace, 83, was killed outright

“Pest of the Week” Sod Webworms: The Isrve* are about %’* long and light brown. Adults are small creamcolored moths. They have a noticeable snout projecting In front of the head and fold their wings tightly against the body when resting. In the evening they flit over the lawn. They hide in shrubbery and other sheltered spots during the day. The first signs of webworm damage are areas of unevenly cropped grass. These areas may soon turn brown and die. Close examination will show that the blades have been eaten away, with bits of chewed foliage between the grass stems. Two or three generations may be produced each year. Therefore, damage is likely to Increase as the summer goes on. Birds picking at lawns often indicate the presence of webworms or cutworms. Control: Apply any one of the following: Dieldrin, Diazinon, (Spectracide) or Dylox. Granules are more effective than sprays. Chemical treatment is a preventive measure.
