Plan Ahead Planning ahead on home Improvements keeps your house in good trim, modern and pleasant. It’s easier on the family budget, too. A five-year program makes good sense for many, as it takes into consideration growing youngsters and changing family needs. “The way to maintain a home’s living and actual values,” says one expert, “is to keep it up. One year, it may mean buying a new living room suite; another, repainting the exterior; another, installing air conditioning.” The consultant suggests a family conference to plan a fiveyear home improvement program. This should result in decisions and a list. Dad and Mom can take it from there.
Many Angles To Remodeling Of Today's Homes When it comes to exterior remodeling, home improvement is a many-sided story — thanks to the many sidings now available for home renovation. For just some of the many sides to the siding story, consider wood, asbestos cement, steel, mineral fiber, aluminum and vinyl. Add to these the masonry veneers; then, add the range of textures, finishes, colors to the category or aiding. Many sided, indeed! For the homeowner, the important sides to the story are these: Improved home appearance, better protection, Increased home value, reasonable cost, convenient maintenance. How to choose the “best” siding? It isn’t an easy question, since many modem sidings seem to offer the same basic advantages of attractive appearance, minimum maintenance and resistance to weather, fire, other damage. A homeowner may choose a certain kind of siding because it offers a special feature he particularly wants, or because he knows it has been widely used in his community, with successful results. His building materials dealer can supply information about the advantages of specific sidings, and he Is also in a position to know how various sidings perform in local use. Some of the many sides of siding are: Wood — A practical and economical choice, wood siding is available in several types to create a variety of architecture! effects, or carry out a special color scheme. Although wood usually requires painting or other refinishing, new prefinished plywood panels make maintenance easy, and are guaranteed never to crack, blister, fade or peel. Masonry Veneers — Distinctive texture is often the reason for choosing a masonry veneer —brick, stone, simulated stone —as a home siding. The veneers offer a wide range of permanent colors, require no painting and have insulating properties. Aluminum — A modem lowmaintenance material, aluminum siding offers such advantages as: No warping, rotting, rusting or cracking and no danger from termites. In addition to qualities of strength and durability, it presents an attractive variety of colors and finishes. Asbestos Cement — Longwearing and easy to maintain, asbestos cement siding is a fireproof, weatherproof mixture of asbestos fibers and Portland cement. It resists rot, rust, decay, chemical fumes or corrosive salt air, and comes in a variety of shapes, textures, col-
ors.
Steel — Fire-resistant and vermin-proof, galvanized steel siding is available in a variety of colors. Vinyl — In the modem, minimum maintenance category is vinyl siding. It will not chip, wear away, blister or peel. Guess Work Is Not Necessary It is unnecessary to guess the amount of paint needed to paint or repaint any house. The label on the paint can usually states how many square feet a gallon will cover. If this information is not given, ask your dealer, or use the following estimates as a guide: Finish coats of house paint can normally be applied to about 500 square feet of surface per gallon. The primer can be applied to about 450 square feet per gallon. The figures will vary according to the covering ability of the paint you select and the condition of the surface to be painted. Also, if you are painting over previously painted surfaces, it will not be necessary to use a primer. On bare wood, a coat of primer should be used. To determine how many square feet of wall surface are to be painted, multiply the length at each wall by the
height measured from the foundation tq the eaves. Add the figures together for the four sides to get the total number of square feet to be covered. If there are gable ends, multiply the length of the gable by onehalf its height, measured from the eave line to the very top. Double this to get the area of the two gabled ends and add this to the wall area. Divide this tqtal by the coverage In square feet per gallon (or 450 for primer; 600 for Ylniwii coat) to get the number at gallons
you need.
Do not deduct for windows or doors — this compensates for eaves, board edges, etc.
Horticultural Tip
LAFAYETTE — Dandelions in your lawn can be controlled with 2,4-D, according to Purdue University extension horticulturists. This material can be used as a spray, in granular form or can be applied by merely pulling a wax bar impregnated with 2,4-D over your lawn. There’s no mixing and less chance of injury to surrounding plans with the wax bar. The horticulturists say it is wise to treat your lawn when weeds are vigorous. When you use 2,4-D, be sure to follow the directions on the container and be careful that the spray drift doesn’t reach other plants. If you do use a sprayer, use it only for chemical weed control, since it’s hard to wash the 2,4-D out of the sprayer, and residues can cause trouble for other plants. Even if you use 2,4-D, you’ll find that there are a few broadleaf weeds that will “sneak by." These include chickweed, knotweed, ground ivy and purslane. But these can be controlled by using 2,4,5-TP, which is sometimes called Silvex, on these weeds. Use it just the same as you would 2,4-D. Be sure to follow label directions carefully. Hollywood News By Vernon Scott HOLLYWOOD UPI— Steve Allen and his wacky brand of madcap, off-center comedy returns to network programming June 14 for a nine-week summer run. Allen’s humor, topical satire to ancient slapstick, has been missing from the air since his own comedy show folded some three years ago. For the past two and a half years his talents have been wasted on the inane ‘Tve Got a Secret.” Since his first big television success as the host of the “Tonight” show back in the 50s, Allen has bounced around on all three major networks in a variety of shows. His durability matches any In television. “Maybe it’s because Tve always surrounded myself with very funny men with styles of their own,’ he said during a break in preparations for the coming show. And so he has. Louis Nye will be back with him this summer. However, such other Allen discoveries as Jim Nabors, Tom Poston, Don Knotts, Tim Conway, the Smothers Brothers and Bill Dana will not. AH got their first big breaks with Allen and went on to individual stardom, some excelling their old benefactor at the boxoffice. Steve’s beautiful and witty wife, Jayne Meadows, will be a regular this summer as will Dayton why not? Allen. “There’s more to it than lining up talented comedians for a show,’ Allen said. “You must know how to use them and allow them to work their own specialties into your format. “We’ll provide plenty of music, sketches and mono*
