ON THE FARM FRONT

WASHINGTON UPI — The spread between the retail cost and the farm value of food dropped during the first quarter of this year, but it was stiil 5 per cent wider than a year ago, the Agriculture Department reported today. The department said the marketing spread decreased by 1 per cent from the record of the last quarter of 1966. The marketing spread narrowed mainly

because of decreases in the retail prices for meat products, poultry and fresh fruits, the report said. The marketing spread now has decreased in each month since November. These decreases were preceded by declines in both the farm value and retail cost of food, which have dropped every month since August of last year. Farmers received an average

of 38 cents of the dollar consumers spent for domestic farm foods in retail stores in the first quarter, the report said. During 1960-64, the quarterly average farmer’s share varied from 36 to 39 cents, averaging 37 or 38 cents in 13 out of 20 quarters. Compared with a year ago, the spread for all products except poultry was wider in the first quarter. The report said

increases were particularly significant for meat products, dairy products, bakery and cereal products, fresh fruits, and fats and oils. The retail cost of farm foods is expected to average about the same in the second quarter, but small increases in the second half of 1967 seem likely. The retail cost, however, probably will remain about the same as a year ago. The total first quarter farm value of the products in the farm food “market basKet” averaged 3414 annual rate, down almost 3 per cent from the pre-

ceding quarter. Declines were recorded for all product groups except poultry and fresh vegetables. The market basket of farm foods contains the average quantities of domestic farm-originat-ed food products purchased annually per household in 1960 and 1961 by wage-earner and clerical-worker families. The farm value is the return to farmers for the farm products in the market basket The farm value of the market basket in the first quarter averaged almost 9 per cent below a year earlier, the report

said. Meat products accounted for much of the drop, although poultry, eggs, fruits and vegetables also declined significantly. Those declines were partly offset by large increases in farm prices for dairy, bakery and cereal products. The retail cost of the market basket averaged 31,084 annual rate for the first three months of this year, down 2 per cent from the previous quarter and 1 per cent lower than the first quarter of 1966. The decline resulted mainly from lower retail prices for meat products eggs and fresh fruits, the report said.
