Final Weekend of Time

Race at Pimlico

Trials Sees Feverish Action

BALTIMORE UPI —Trainer Loyd (Boo) Gentry issued last

INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Crews And drivers worked feverishly today to prepare for the final weekend of qualifications for the Memorial Day 500-mile auto race amid prospects the weather might cut into the last day of practice. Trials to complete the 33-car starting field for the May 30 classic are scheduled Saturday and Sunday with eight spots still open. When they are filled, the traditional “bumping” will begin with faster cars eliminating slower machines from the

lineup.

The forecast for today was for showers and thundershowers and gusty winds, threatening to cut down on the amount of time left to get cars up to the speeds felt necessary to make the race. There were 50 cars on the track Thursday but many of them were cars which already had qualified and the day’s best performances were by cars from that group. The top speed was a clocking of 163.9 miles per hour by Dan Gurney, Santa Ana, Calif., the second-fastest qualifier last Saturday. Mario Andretti, Nazareth, Pa., who set new one and four-lap speed records in

winning the pole position, was close behind at 163. Former winner Pamelli Jones, Torrance, Calif., the sixth fastest qualifier In the revolutionary turbine-powered car, has several laps at 162. Among drivers whose ears have yet to qualify, only three managed to reach or exceed 160 mph. Richie Ginther, Santa Ana, and Jim Hurtubise, North Tonawanda, N. Y., both at 161, and Jochen Rindt of Austria at 160. Most observers feel it will take a four-lap average of better than 162 to make the field. Norm Brown, Grand Rapids, Mich., escaped injury In Thursday’s only mishap. The rookie’s car spun coming out of the northwest turn but did not hit anything and was not damaged.

NOTICE Principal N. Dixon’s retirement program will be held on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30 p. m. at Ridpath School instead of May 28 aa reported. .

Proud Clarion, a white blaze running from his mane down to his nose, was one of 10 three-year-olds entered Thursday for the second gem of the Triple Crown racing classics.
