Cause Hike In Car Prices

DETROIT UPI—Henry Ford H warns that Ford, Motor Co. "shall have to look to substantial price increases” for 1968 model cars to cover the costs of government safety and exhaust control standards. Ford, chairman of the nation’s second largest auto making company, also accused the federal government of bowing

to “intense political pressure” in drawing up some of the 20 safety standards required for cars produced after next Jan. 1. In remarks prepared for presentation to the firm’s stockholders at the Ford annual meeting, Ford also warned the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) that there is “on justification whatever for outsize gains by the UAW” in contract negotiations with the "big three” auto makers this summer. Ford said the auto industry weis working smoothly with the federal government on cutting down air pollutants contained in auto exhaust Exhaust controls are required for all 1968 model cars which go into production this summer. But he said in working on safety standards “we have had serious difficulties establishing meaningful communication with the government.” “Ford research, development and manufacturing costs to reduce emissions and improve safety are adding up very rapidly,” Ford said. “We shall have to look to substantial price increases next fall to cover these added costs.”

Heloise-

Or he would use a soft toothbrush and do the same thing. Billie McGihray o • * » Now, dear folks, DON’T grab a toothbrush and start shining your silverware. If you use a soft chamois or a damp sponge, dip it into the talcum powder and then gently buff the top . . . you will end up with the gorgeous oxidation left in the scroll work.

If you take a toothbrush and go at it with a vengeance, all of your oxidation will be gone. So remember to do this GENTLY. Oxidation is what makes scroll work in silver so beautiful. Heloise e • • e Dear Heloise: I have long hair and often find it a nuisance to comb the tangles out after a shampoo. Here’s my solution. I soap up my brush with shampoo, then I wash and brush my hair while taking my shower. Not only is each strand soap-

ed and the tangles gone, but I wind up with a very clean brush! Alice Kelbnan a a • a Dear Heloise: I find a nut pick is a handy thing to keep in my sewing basket It’s strong enough to pull out the most stubborn bastings without any danger of bending. It’s also good for untying knots in parcels or children’s shoe strings. Marjorie Lawrence • • • • Dear Heloise: When I brown my tiny meat

balls, instead of browning them in a skillet on the top of the stove (which sometimes causes them to come out square and broken), I put them in a large greased skillet and place them in the oven. Do NOT cover with a lid. I set the oven at 350 degrees and in 35 to 45 minutes, depending on how brown I want them, I have the nicest round and brown meat balls you’ve ever seen. Elsie K. • • • • And here’s another tidbit I’ve practiced on when using your method. Try dusting them with

flour first. Then when you put them in your spaghetti sauce, not only does it add thickening but the sauce STICKS to each meat ball. Great. He t oi s« • * • • Dear Heloise: When small children start to brush their teeth, they find even the regular children’s brushes too big. So if you have a youngster just beginning tooth care, get one of the little electric toothbrushes (just the brush). It fits their mouths better smd is easier for them to handle. Horticultural Tip Lafayette, Ind. Your lawn needs simple attention from April through autumn. And this attention, according to Purdue University extension horticulturists, involves more than muscle.

Many people, in their spring enthusiasm, tire themselves out vigorously to start a new lawn. But, the basic simple tasks should be taken care of first Keep the lawn cut, taking care not to mow closer than a two-inch height. In addition, be sure to water the lawn during dry spells. If broadleaf weeds such as dandelions Eind plantain are present, they can be controlled with 2,4-D. These relatively simple tasks, the horticulturists say, are usually enough when combined with fertilization in early spring and again around Labor Day. The grass thrives with this kind of attention, but It needs this simple care from spring through fall.
