A Local Teenager's View By Janet Staub For many people the memorable day has already passed, but for the Class of ’67 of Greencastle Senior High School it is a day which is coming very fast Baccalaureate is scheduled for May 28 and Commencement will be the following Thursday. Graduation exercises were first held by European universities of the Middle Ages. American schools still have many of the European graduation customs. In most American schools there are two special graduation ceremonies—baccalaureate and commencement The baccalaureate service is a religious serv ice which is usually held on the Sunday before commencement The commencement exercise is the ceremony in which th diplomas are given out In most colleges, graduates wear academic gowns and caps to both ceremonies. The gowns are long and usually black (but in modem times are available even in plaids!) and the tasselled flat caps which are called mortarboards. Many schools also have other ceremonies connected with graduation. At such meetings, the graduating class reads the “class will” and the “class prophecy.” The graduating class also usually makes a gift to the school. BY THE WAY: The Junior High School Red and Blue Bigtop is May 24.

Dear Heloise: After washing stretch slacks for the first time, have you ever dismally discovered the legs too tight and the seat looking as though you’d been poured into it? Well, if this happens, wash the slacks again as usual. Instead of plopping them into the dryer or just hanging them up to dry, get a pair of boys’ pants stretchers and adjust them to “narrow” at the bottom and move the top of the stretchers until they are “medium.” Then push them into the legs of the slacks and hang ’em up to dry. The beauty of this is that if your legs and thighs are on the heavy side, you can adjust the stretcher either way and you’ll get a perfect fit and crease every time. Nancy a u • a Dear Heloise: If your powdered sugar gets too hard and lumpy and you can’t use it in recipes, use it in your coffee. One or two lumps, please!
