out, Trench!” The demonstrators were cooly but politely received by an aide to Trench, who solemnly accepted their petitions from behind a sign marked “protests.” About 300 chanting Chinese youths slapped Communist posters on the walls of Trench’s residence and waved little red books containing quotations of Communist Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung. The New China News Agency (NCNA) said a million Chinese marched past the office of the British charge d’affaires in Peking to protest police action during a week of savage Com-munist-led riots in Hong Kong. Peking earlier protested the use of Hong Kong harbor by U.S. naval ships bringing men for rest and relaxation from South Vietnam. It said Britain had allowed the colony to be used as a “base of aggression”

in the war. The NCNA broadcast said the area around the British diplomatic mission was thickly covered with anti-British, antiAmerican and, of course, antiRussian posters. The agency said a smaller protest rally was held in thp southern city of Canton to show Britain that It was "on the brink of a precipice in Hong Kong. The swelling anti-British campaign was joined by North Korea which protested the “savage repression” in Hong Kong. The North Korean foreign ministry said Britain had thrown down “an insolent chal lenge to the Chinese peop? - as a whole." The demonstration outside the governor’s residence was the first in Hong Kong island. The rioting has taken place in Kowloon a part of the British crown colony on the mainland China coast itself. Mobs of Chinese stormed through the main tourist area of Kowloon Wednesday and turned it into a battlefield as they clashed with tear gaswielding police.

WASHINGTON UPI — President Johnson looked to the Senate today for friends of the Great Society after finding out the hard way their ranks have been depleted In the House. The strengthened Republican House minority led a successful drive Wednesday to kill Johnson’s controversial rent supplement plan. The House also made a threatening run at the administration’s model cities program before approving a sharply cut I down version of the measure. The Senate, with a more liberal makeup than the House, was expected to restore at least part of the funds trimmed from the two Great Society programs. The House action cutting off further funds for the rent subsidy program came on a 232-171 roll call. The move knocked out the $10 million approved by the House Appropriations Committee. That was all that remained of the original $40 million the administration requested to help poor people meet their rent payments in fiscal 1968. The GOP attempt to leave the model cities program with only $12 million in planning funds failed on a 213-193 roll call. But the appropriations committee had earlier slashed the administration’s $662 million request to $237 million. Republicans refused Wednesday to buy the argument of Rep. Joe Evins, D-Tenn, floor
Hope Aba9ido9ied For Three Missing Boys
HANNIBAL, Mo. UPI—Hope was nearly gone today. Hundreds of searchers had failed to turn up any trace of three boys missing since they embarked on a Mark Twain adventure more than a week ago. The boys were believed dead — trapped underground or drowned in the river. One by one would-be rescuers combed the myriad tunnels and caves that dot the dirt bluffs in and around this Mississippi River town. The search cost an estimated $1 million in man hours, supplies and equipment. By today the hundreds of searchers had dwindled to little more than a dozen men. And they operated with no sense of urgency. “There’s no reason to hurry
now,” said geologist Gregory Yokum who directed the excavation of caves in which the boys — Joe Hoag, 13, his brother, William 11, and Edwin Dowell, 14 — might have been trapped. He said a 200-foot-l6ng trench, 50 feet wide and eight feet deep would be extended another 50 feet today in a final search for a cavern thought to be in the area, and which playmates said the missing boys explored the day before they disappeared a week ago Wednesday. Yokum said he thought the cavern might be uncovered early today. The cave was one of several either opened up and then plugged by highway construction crews or long-known caverns obliterated by the con-
struction. “And if we don’t find them there, I’m going home,” he said. Cave expert William Karras, in charge of the underground search of the caves uncovered by Yokum, was gloomy. He said of the last remaining cavern thought to be in Lovers’ Leap Hill: “If the kids aren’t in it, that’ll just about be it.” Civil defense director William Broaddus said If the boys are not found, he would put “a slough of boats in the river" to begin dragging operations. He believes the Mississippi is the only place left to look. Parents of the children, and some officials, believed there was a possibility the children might have run away or were hiding for some reason.

manager of the appropriations bill, that rent supplements would eliminate public housing. Evins called the rent subsidy proposal a “free enterprise approach” to housing. But the GOP said it would cost more per family than public housing itself. House Republican leader Gerald R. Ford, R-Mich., and Rep. Charles R. Jonas, R-N.C., led the GOP floor fight against the Great Society proposals.

sands of homes and businesses without gas and electricity for most of the day. Labor leaders claimed more than 95 per cent of the workers in some industries heeded the call by France’s four major unions for a show of unified opposition to Premier George Pompidou’s bid to rule the country by decree on social and economic matters for the next six months. Pompidou was scheduled to go before the National Assembly later today to explain the reasons why the special powers are needed and to appeal for support from within and without the Gaullist factions. The Communists and the Leftist Federation, feeling their strength after the general strike, were expected to make a rigorous attempt in the assembly to pass a motion of censure they laid against tha government Debate on the censure motion begins Friday and a vote is . expected to be taken on Satur-
day.
The government, whicn with its 245 seats, now holds a bare parliamentary majority, was expected to win the powers it wants in order to push through urgent social and economic reforms without the normal red
tape.
But there was speculation the ; demonstrations across the country and the general strike may be the first of a burgeoning strike aimed against the government’s special powers bid.
