T^ARLY IN THE nineteenth century, according to Charles •Hi Poore, there was a sailor aboard an English man-of-war whose particular task was the care of a big iron cannon on the afterdeck. One day he did not do his job thoroughly. The ship rode into a furious gale, di 4he cannon tore loose from its moorings, ca“Teened about the slippery * deck and bowled two sea_,men overboard. Further casualties were avoided nnly when the negligent sailor himself, regardless r-of the danger involved, sprawled out on the deck and, single-handed, tied ..the cannon down. When the man-of-war reached port, a resourceful admiral saw to it that the sailor ‘'Received his just award for conspicuous bravery. Then he was hung for negligence. # A Chicago newspaper editor pinned this notice to the city room bulletin board: “How’s for learning to spell that word •judgement’ correctly? Let’s repeat to ourselves every morning. This is the day I’ll spell “judgment” without an E.’ Praise be to ...the first man who accomplishes this great feat." Later that day a newshawk put this memo alongside the "HJbove: “Dear Ed: I tried to spell judgment without an E today and it came out Mudgmnt.’ How do I get out of THIS prdica- ‘ wmt?" RECENT GUESTS AT GREENVIEW APARTMENTS Rev. Stanley Nicol of First Baptist Church conducted the vesper services Sunday night, with Lowell Flint bringing three numbers in song. This was the third in a series of programs recently presented to the residents. Prof. Oliver Robinson, a resident of the Home, gave a program of readings from his own stories, which have been published in recent years. Professor Robert Williams, also of the DePauw faculty, gave a program of readings in dialect on the previous Sunday. Miss Barbara Yuncker of New York City is this week visiting her mother Mrs. Truman Yuncker, and other longtime friends in Greencastle. Douglas Johnson was the overnight guest a week ago of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Johnson, enroute from his home at Bloomington to active service with the armed services in Germany. Dr. William McGaughey of Piedmont, California with his mother, Mrs. W. M. McGaughey and Mr. and Mrs. Simpson Stoner of Greencastle, were dinner guests of Mrs. Vera Blanchard and Dr. Winona Welsh. Mrs. Rebecca Frakea of Bloomington was the weekend guest of her sister Mrs. Glenn Jeffries, with two other sisters, Mrs. Alma Evans and Mrs. Jessie A. Curtis of Spencer, coming for Mother’s Day. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Allen of Indianapolis, with Mrs. Eugene Allan and James, Mrs. Marian Gifford and Wendy, of Greencastle were Mothers Day dinner guests of Mrs. Harry Allan, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. John Baughman and son were Mother's Day guests of her parents, Rev. and Mrs. John Bowden.
