TV in review
By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI — Jack Paar, who has done more for Hollywood than it ever did for him, applied his brand to filmland Sunday night in a saucy, irreverent NBC-TV hour, one of his annual specials. And I think that what is most remarkable about this consummate showman is that, even virtually retired from the theatrical business, he remains more aware than his working contemporaries of all the subtleties and innuendoes of the art of television, and how to blend them with finesse. In this latest hour, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Hollywood,” his usual amalgamation of film clips, monologue, conversation and guest entertainment showed anew his awareness of all phases of the film and performing arts, and his sensitivity to the current moods and attitudes of his audi-
ence.
For Mr. Paar seems entirely alert to the fact that television Is a “now” medium, and that in order to succeed In It as the host of an adult program — to give a feeling of being entirely •‘with It” — one must give the Impression at having read more than show business papers with breakfast It Is not merely the information one gets from reading widely and selectively, but the feeling of responsiveness for the creative moment—the preparation sp that one is able to recognize it and react to it properly. Mr. Paar’s reactions hie as attuned as ever, which is Why, even In virtual retirement, he remains the king of television. I hope he gets a little bored at home soon. Television heeds him. The reactions of mature humorists, of genuine satirists, are, at base, the reactions of Cultivated men tg the stupidities Sm) Indignities of the world ■round them. And throughout bom* of the film clips shown Sunday night—of, say, a screen
venge. In his own unique way, he has been something of a Samuel Pepys of the home screen. He has the capacity to
test or an embarrassing passage —one sensed a deeper, prohumanist outrage at the humiliation decent, talented people must often suffer in pursuit of their dreams. One could only admire this sense of perspective. Most of the clips, of course, were great fun. But lots of people have used clips, and the secret to a Paar show is more than that. Even on tape, he can radiate that tingling sensation of unexpectedness, so that the audience is constantly on edge, never knowing what outrageous thing is going to happen next. He sometimes courts disaster— as in Sunday night’s tightrope of an Interview with Judy Garland — yet he almost always manages to swing his way out gloriously, for he is a man of taste, and there is no substitute
for that.
Furthermore, in his understanding of the television me-
dium, he has that happy mixture of instinct that results in intimacy. And intimacy is the key word to any understanding
of how to really succeed in an do great things as a television adult way in live — or live-on-1 diarist. Given the opportunity, tape — television. I think it he could move to an entirely would be wrong to interpret j different level of accomplish-
Sunday’s show as Paar’s re- i ment.

A Bargain in Air Cooling May be in the Basement
NEW YORK (UPI) — You may have a real cool bargain in your basement. More than 20 million American homes are heated by warm air furnaces — and the furnace’s fan, plus the ductwork supplying forced air throughout the house, is half the equipment needed for central air conditioning. The rest of the air conditioning can be added at relatively low cost; less than 21,000 for many average . sized three bedroom houses. This means that central air conditioning is demonstrably within reach of a majority of
American homeowners, according to heating-cooling experts at General Electric Company's Central Air Conditioning and Heating Department. Trouble is, many homeowners don’t even know about the bargain in their basement, or how to take advantage of it. The first step is to understand exactly what Is central air conditioning. An add-on system, such as most owners of existing homes purchase w r hen they decide to cool their houses, has only three parts: the condensing section — a heat removal unit that Is outdoors: the cooling coil which sits atop

Here is a neat band played by Bruce Bell, one of New Zealand’s top experts. The deal features a comparatively rare sequence of plays which led to an unusual and spectacular slid-
ing.
West led a .diamond and Bell had to choose between two possible lines of play. He oould try to raff Ms spades in dummy, which geemed Ukaly to leava Mm short of Ms goal of twelve tricks, op ho could attempt a
PAMOUS HANDS dummy reversal, which would require little more than a 3-2 trump break. Bell naturally selected the latter method of play and made the contract as a ro>
suit.
A dummy reversal involves ruffing dummy’s losers with the longer trump suit in the closed hand. Declarer ultimately uses the shorter trump length in dummy to extract the opposing trumps. This procedure enables him to score more trump tricks than he would normally be able to make. Ball ducked the diamond lead and ruffed in his hand. He than played a heart to the queen, ruffed another diamond, led a heart to the king, and ruffed a third diamond. Having now exhausted all five of his trumps, he led tha jack of clubs to the queen. He then cashed the ace of hearts, drawing West’s last trump, and next the ace of diamonds. On the two aces he discarded the A-K of clubs! Having unblocked the dubs With these sensational discards. Ball could now cash dummy's 10-9-8 to bring himself to eleven tricks. The ace of spades then accounted for the slam-going trick. All in all, Bell scored four dubs, the ace of diamonds, the aoo of Qiades and six trump tricks to conclude a resounding performance.
the furnace, and the tubing connecting the two. The furnace fan pushes cool air through the same ducts used for warm air in winter. Since the condensing unit is outside the house, there’s no problem about noise, or finding floor space for the unit. Second Step The second step is to find out how much cooling capacity your house requires. Your local dealer will come to your house, to make a cost estimate — checking the cubic footage inside the house, the insulation, the amount of glass area, and other factors which add up to the heat gain that has to be removed for effective cooling. One important consideration say the GE experts, is the size of the ducts. Since cool air le less bquyant than warm air, it needs more duct space to flow through — or a larger fan to move it faster. Enlarging the ducts could be expensive and your dealer may recommend installing a bigger furnace fan possibly a two-speed unit for warm and cool air movement. How much will it cost tq operate your central air conditioning system? Surprisingly little. It will vary according to the kind of air conditioner you buy, the size of your house, the cost of electricty and the length and intensity of the hqt weather season. So, no need to wait to enjoy the cool life. It’s less expensive than you may think. Particularly when you consider the bargain In your basement

Nurses' Slayer In Court Today CHICAGO UPI — Richard F'ranklin Speck today leaves his Cook County jail cell in the shadow of the electric chair for a court appearance in which his attorney will argue for his life. It will be the first public appearance for the gangly, vagabond seaman since his conviction April 15 in Peoria, BL, on charges of stabbing and choking to death eight young nurses in their dormitory apartment last July 14 on Chicago’s South Side. Since the jury of seven meq and five women recommended his penalty be death in the electric chair. Speck, 25, has been housed in the county jail’s old “death row,” occupying most of his tims reading and painting. During his trial, he was housed in a cell at the new Peoria County courthouse. Cook County Public Defender Gerald Getty, who has never lost a client to the electric chair in defending more than 400 murder cases, has indicated he will argue 25 points in seeking a new trial before Circuit Court Judge Herbert C. Paschen. Assistant state’s atty. William Martin, who prosecuted Speck in the two-month trial, was expected to oppose the motion and ask that the jury’s recommendation of death be carried out Should petition be denied, Pashchen was expected to set a date for sentencing, pernaps later this month. While the death penalty is not absolutely binding, court observers were unable to recall any judge disregarding a jury's wishes in such matters.
