Get Free Land in Italy By Just Building a House

PERUGIA, Italy, UPI — They’re giving away Umbria, Italy’s beautiful region of shady forests, rolling hills and flat-topped pine trees. You can have up to 6,000 square yards (about acres) of Umbria land—plots nestled in the hills or beside deep, still lakes — free of charge. There are catches, of course: You have to be a non-Italian citizen and you have to agree

to build a substantial home on the terrain. But take heart Umbrian officials may even arrange a loan for you — at a reasonably low interest rate — to construct your home away from home, your hideaway In sunny Italy. There’s method to the wily Umbrian madness. Umbria’s planners hope to breathe new economic life into their central

inland region, which consists of Perugia Province (2,455 square , miles) and smaller Temi Province (922 square miles). They reason that tourists bring money. And money, Umbria’s fathers know, is the best shot in the arm of the region's sagging, primarily agricultural economy. The man who thought up what Italy’s National Tourism

Agency now concedes was "a very brilliant idea” is Prof. Mario Potenza, president of Umbria’s Provincial Agency for Tourism. Potenza broached the idea to the National Tourism Agency and it put the word out to Europe late last year. So far, 3,000 requests for a piece of Umbrian soil have been received from Danes, Germans, Belgians, Frenchmen and Englishmen. All have agreed to build as soon as possible and never to sell the land or the homes they build on it —two other stipulations. Most of the land presently available is located in the town of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, on the huge Trasimeno Lake,

or in Castiglione del Lago, Magione, N o r c i a. Corciano, Gualdo Cattaneo, Gualdo Tadino, Todi and Spoleto. All are rich in cultural treasures, especially Spoleto. which composer Giancarlo Menoyyi has put (m the map with his Musical Festival of Two Worlds. Discriminating tourists have always included Umbrian cities in their Italian travels, stopping off at Perugia, which has a fine university for foreigners, the nearby medieval hilltop town of Assisi and Orvieto. Hiose living In Umbria, whose race the Roman scholar Piny regarded as the most ancient inhabitants of Italy, are at most a two and one half

hour drive from Rome and even closer than that to the Tuscan city of Florence. Summers are fairly mild and the wine is excellent — white or red.

In Style NEW HAVEN, Conn. UPI— State police say seven Chinese seamen who jumped ship during the weekend are still missing but two are back aboard. They were apprehended Tuesday, riding In a chauffeur-driv-en limousine and reading copies of the New York Post. Authorities said the seamen apparently just wanted to look at America. They were from an English ship.

Flying Boxcar Touring Bases COLUMBUS, UPI — A “beefed up” prototype of the C-119 flying boxcar is currently touring U.S. Air Force installations with the possibility that the plane will be produced later in larger quantities. Three Carrier Wing stationed at Bakalor Air Force Base here are among the crew showing off the new version of the old plane. \faj. Billy Knowles, Columbus, is pilot; M-Sgt. Robert Sanders, Franklin, and Capt.

James Davis, Greenwood, aro also in the crew. Hie plane, known as thf “YC-119-K,” is equipped with two “beefed up reciprocating” engines and two jet engines. Air Force officials said the craft has additional safety factors and modifications have been made to provide for shorter take-off and landing distances.
