Madame Mao, better known as Chiang Ching, as a prime expounder of her husband’s thoughts and devoted the front page of all the major party organs to a speech she gave three years ago. In it, she attacked performers in China’s traditional opera for not properly servicing Communism. The rate editorial tribute in the party theoretical journal | Red Flag, the Peking Peoples Daily and other papers marked the prim-looking former Shang-! hai movie actress as a person to be reckoned with in Communist China’s raging power struggle. The effects of Mao’s “cultural revolution" purge of his enemies were being felt most strongly in hostile Szechuan Province where hundreds of his troops were reported to have revolted against Maoist officials. At least 500 persons

reportedly lost their lives in rioting which broke out in Szechuan April 29. The Japanese Kyodo news agency reported that Mao had fired Li Ching-chuan, the top Communist official in Szechu an. He was first secretary of the party’s southwest bureau.

Change Made In Catholic Mass VATICAN CITY UPI —The entire Roman Catholic Mass may be said alout in modern language under new “instruction" handed down by the Sacred Congregation of Rites, Vatican officials confirmed today. The new “instruction,” which was published in the Vatican City newspaper Osservatore Romano Saturday, was the second document aimed at implementing the Ecumenical Council's reform of the liturgy. The first document permitted the vernacular to be used instead of Latin in all the liturgy except the cannon of the Mass. The new “instruction” allows the canon-the series of prayers that precede and accompany the consecration of the communion sacrament-also to be said in modem languages. The new document said, “the vernacular may be used: A in the canon of the mass. B in the entire rite of priestly ordination. C in the reading of the divine office.”

NATO Reaction Pleases Secretary PARIS UPI —Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara Is pleased with the reaction to America’s plan for redeploying 35,000 U. S. troops from West Germany by his North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO colleagues, American officials said today. McNamara told the NATO defense ministry Tuesday the American plan Is not a with drawl because the troops would remain under NATO command, the officials said. He said the American forces would be based in the United States rather than in West Germany. NATO opposition might have endangered the cost - saving change. The secretary said the troops would be airlifted to Germany each summer for training exercises and anytime in a military emergency. The ministers also decided at their annual meeting to abandon in principle the idea of massive retaliation against the Communist bloc in favor of a plan to allow limited response in the face of limited aggression.

Traffic Toll 396 By United Press International The death of a Fort Wayne woman in a Noble County traffic accident late Wednesday increased the 1967 Indiana highway death toll to at least 396, compared with 505 a year ago. Louise Kilmer, 47, Fort Wayne, was killed and three other persons Injured in a twocar collision on U.S. 33 north of Kimmell in Noble County. Authorities said her car went out of control on a curve and collided with an oncoming car.
