The Lighter Side

By DICK WEST WASHINGTON UPI—People whose job it is to worry about such things have begun to worry about what effect the forthcoming supersonic transports may have on circadian rhythm. Don’t try to pretend you don’t have a circadian rhythm. Of course you do. All creatures have it Some more than others. Many insects have mysterious internal mechanisms, known as biological clocks, which regulate their lives as punctually as those tiny time pills on television. We human beings don’t go quite that far, but our daily lives are to some extent governed by natural cycles. When supersonic transports come into being, we will start crossing time zones at unnatural speeds, racing forward intotomorrow or backwards toward yesterday. The concern is that this may disturb our circadian rhythms, causing us to become confused and disoriented. Even more than we already are. To illustrate the problem, If it actually is a problem, I have invented a situation which

probably ha* ro >elej»tifle foundation out which may indicate the sort of thing we will be getting into. Gladstone Chumbley, the new U. S. ambassador to Japan created an international incident here tonight shortly after his arrival from Washington. Chumbley was welcomed at the airport by Japanese Foreign Minister Hiho Hohi and invited to dine at the celebrated Kamikaze Hilton. He was the first Western diplomat ever to be so honored. In the ancient dining room, where sacred Japanese dishes have been served since the time of the Kamakura Shogunate, Chumbley made an unforgivable blunder. He ordered ham and eggs. The foreign minister, seeking to atone for his guest’s faux pas, immediately seized a Cheese knife and committed hara-kiri, as did three geishas and a troupe of kabuki dancers. The incident is expected to bring a protest note from the Japanese government, kabuki dancers being hard to replace. ‘It was circadian rhythm acting up again,” Chumbley said later when asked to explain his conduct. He said the long flight from Washington, during which numerous time zones were crossed at supersonic speeds, caused him to become disoriented in the orient. “I thought it was breakfast time,” Chumbley said, “and I always order ham and eggs for breakfast.”

WaS Street Chatter NEW YORK UPI—William R. White of Homblower & Weeks, Hemphill, Noyes says the current stock market advance has brought prices to a level where resistance may be expected to allow for a consolidation of earlier gains. But he adds that it seems reasonable a more vigorous attempt at reaching the 920-930 area on the Dow Jones industrial average will be made before the spring rally has run out of steam. The analyst believes the expected improvement in earnings in the next three to six months should provide a more cheerful background for the stock market

Sandard A Poor’s says the buildup in investor confidence should provide for further advances in the stock market in the near future but the com-

pany says much of the improvement in the business world has already been discounted by transfers and many hurdles still lie ahead. Therefore, the company suggests that a high degree of discrimination in making purchases be used in the present market

Wright Investors’ Service says a moderate price reaction in late May-June should be considered by investors as a constructive buying opportunity in level where resistance may be a market that will almost certainly end the year in higher price levels.
