76ers Down Warriors To Win Championship In Close Contest
SAN FRANCISCO UPI—The whole ball of wax belonged to the Philadelphia 76ers today and it was a great moment for coach Alex Hannum to do a little gloating, but he is not the type. Trailing by five points when the final quarter started Monday night, the 76ers rallied to go ahead of the San Francisco Warriors and then hold off a last surge to triumph 125-122 and win the National Basketball Association crown by a margin of four games to two. "This is the greatest team in history because it won on the road and that is the mark of a champion,” Hannum said afterwards while champagne was sloshed around the victors’ dressing room. But he also warmly praised the Warriors as an “inspired team.” It also climaxed a smashing comeback for the former Southern California star who had been cut loose as coach by the Warriors after the 1965-66
campaign because he refused to settle down in this area. So he took over the 76ers, who breezed to the Eastern Division title, then knocked off defending champion Boston in the divisional playoffs, and then defeated the embattled Warriors, who had won the Western Division playoffs by downing St. Louis. The victory was worth $3500
apiece in first money for the 76ers and $2500 each for the Warriors. The contest was a dowm-to-the-wire affair which had a Cow Palace crowd of 15,612 plus a closed circuit TV audience of 4,483 in Oakland screaming during the final seconds. San Francisco went into the last quarter holding a five-point lead with a good chance of
sending the best-of-seven series back to Philadelphia for a Wednesday showdown. But the 76ers’ Bill Cunningham, who had 17 points for the night, packed 10 of them into a five minute burst which helped his club move ahead 114-109. A 10-foot jumper by the Warriors’ Rick Barry, whose 44 points led all scorers, nudged them back ahead 115-114. But then San Francisco’s Nate Thurmond fouled Wilt Chamberlain, who made good on both free throws to put Fhilly ahead to stay. The game wasn’t decided, however, until the final two seconds. Barry was fouled by Luke Jackson with 41 seconds to go and hit on two free throws to cut the 76ers’ lead back to a point. Rick missed a shot from the side with four seconds to go after a Warriors time out. Chet Walker of the 76ers then was fouled by Thurmond and put in two free throws which wrapped it up.

Churchill, Norris Star But Cubs Lose To Wiley, 70-48
Despite a damp track, cold weather, and two Tiger Cub double winners, Wiley downed Greencastle 70-48 in a dual Western Indiana Conference meet Monday on the West Vigo cinders. The Tiger Cubs suffered their second setback of the campaign as the Red Streaks established their mark at 7-3. Ray Churchill and Dewayne Norris carried the Cub effort as Churchill won the 100-yard dash and the long jump, while Norris triumphed in both hurdle events and was second in the long and high jumps. Churchill’s long jump leap of 21 feet is the best of the outdoor season to date, while he clipped off the 100-yard dash in a time of 10:4. Norris, who is considered by many as one of the top underclassmen in the state, won the high hurdles in a time of 16.5 and the lows with 22.2. The Red Streaks captured eight of 14 firsts en route to

CASSIUS CLAY
The court acted in a brief order, without comment. Clay, who goes by the Black Muslim name of Muhammad Ali, is trying to fight the draft on the grounds that Negroes have been systematically excluded from the Selective service system. He also is claiming exemption on the ground that he is a Black Muslim minister. The court issued the same kind of order last Monday but Clay asked for reconsideration. He has also petitioned the court to review a decision against him on April 17 by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. Clay wants a special threejudge court convened to test the constitutionality of the Selective Service Act. But lower federal courts, and last Monday the Supreme Court as Well, have denied his request.
