Soviets Mourn For Cosmonaut MOSCOW UPI — Grieving Russians today readied a hero’s burial in the Kremlin Wall for for their oldest cosmonaut, “a i bom fighter, even to the end.” Investigators sought to determine how far his crash death would set the Soviets back in the race to the moon. "Death has brought both nations back to square one in the moon race,” said an eminent scientific observer in Moscow following the death of Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov in a malfunctioning Soyuz 1 (Union 1) spacecraft. It was Russia’s first manned space venture in 25 months. In Washington, U.S. officials said Komarov’s space vehicle tumbled out of control in orbit. They said after failing to achieve re-entry on the 16th orbit he finally re-entered on the 18th orbit but the end-over-end spinning had fouled his landing parachute. Komarov, 40-year-old father of two children, was the first known Russian victim of the space race. He died Monday when Soyuz 1 slammed into the earth near the Ural Mountains in the central Soviet Union at an estimated 300 miles per hour. His widow, Valentina, who learned of his flight only after he was in orbit, said he was “a good friend, a good father, a good comrade.”

SHEINWOLD ON BRIDGE
Find Good Luck If You Look Hard By Alfred Sheinwold The average bridge player flubs a certain kind of contract before he has begun to think. Even when the hand is all over he may not see what has happened. “Very lucky,” he sighs, and nobody points out that he could have found better luck if he had looked harder. West leads the ten of spades, and South wins with the king. Now our average player draws trumps. Eventually he tries the diamond finesse, losing to the queen. The defenders then take a club trick, defeating the con-
tract.
The best player in the world cannot be sure of the contract when he sees only the dummy and the South hand, but it doesn’t take the best player to make six hearts as the cards lie. All it takes is a second or two of thought before declarer draws the trumps. The diamond finesse will not run away, but dummy’s long club suit will. South must start the clubs without a moment’s delay if he hopes to develop a club trick. He should lead his singleton club at the second
trick.
TRUMPS ARE ENTRIES East wins the queen of clubs and probably returns a trump (no return would defeat the contract). Declarer wins in dummy with the eight of hearts and ruffs a club with an honor. He

Reds Ordered To Leave Jakarta JAKARTA UPI — Indonesia ordered the two highest-rank-ing Communist Chinese diplomats in Jakarta Monday to get out of thn country by Saturday, but did not formally sever relations with the Peking regime. An official announcement said the Red charge d’affairs and consul general have been ordered to leave because the agencies under their direction “intentionally created an atmosphere leading to worsening relations between Indonesia and mainland China.” Foreign Minister Adam Malik said, however, that Peking’s ambassador to Jakarta would be allowed to return if he chose to do so. He went home in October, 1965, shortly after the Communists failed in an attempt to seize power here. The Indonesian court which investigated the abortive coup said the Peking regime was partly to blame for the attempt. Malik pledged that the Indonesian government would protect all foreigners here, but bands of anti-Chinese youths continued to roam the capital’s streets, breaking shop windows and beating Chinese.

returns to dummy with the nine of hearts and ruffs another club with a high trump, then gets to dummy with the jack of hearts to ruff a club for the third time. By this time the trumps have all been drawn, and in the meantime South has set up dummy’* last club. Declarer leads a diamond to the ace and discards the jack of diamonds on the last club. If the clubs had broken badly South could fall back on the diamond finesse as his last resort. The important point is that there is no need to reply on the finesse as the sole resource. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one spade, and the next player passes. You hold: S- 10 9 8 5 2 H- None D- Q 10 7 2 C- A 9 8 7. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid four spades.
