Colts Warm Up For Ky. Derby In Preview Races NEW YORK UPI — With Derby Day a mere two weeks off Damascus attempted to get back on the winning track Saturday as the even money favorite in the 3100,000 added Wood Memorial at Aqaduct. Mrs. Edith W. Barton’s colt was beaten in his most recent outing, last Saturday’s Gotham Stakes at the Big A, and needed a win in the 43rd running of the mile and one-eighth test to maintain his role as the Kentucky Derby favorite. At least one big obstacle, the same one that spelled defeat for Damascus in the Gotham, was removed well before post time when T a r 11 o n Stable’s Dr. Fager was dropped from the Wood field immediately after taking the Gotham. Yet Tarlton trainer Johnny Nerud still sent the top challenger to the post in Brunch, an unbeaten stablemate of Dr. Fager who has scored three wins. Rounding out the field were Dawn Glory, Proviso, Gala Performance, Royal Malabar, Blasting Charge, Puntador and High Hat. Each carried the same 126 pounds that Derby starters will carry May 6, in the 1% mile run for the roses. Damascus, a 3-year-old son of Sword Dancer, had regular jockey Willie Shoemaker up today for the bay colt’s fourth outing of the season. He had taken two of the first three including an allowance race at Pimlico and the Bay Shore Stakes.

First Nine Are Tough RALEIGH, N.C. UPI — There was a lot of talk about the tough front nine of the 312,000 Raleigh Ladies Invitational Open Golf Tournament here Friday. Kathy Whitworth and Susie Maxwell were the opening round leaders, both coming in with par 72s. Par remained elusive for the remainder of the field, however, in the 54-hole event The second round is being played today. Betsy Rawls, Betsy Cullen and Peggy Wilson were bunched together one stroke back at 73. Many of the women playing in this second round annual tournament complained about the tough pin placements and the tricky putting greens on the Raleigh Country Club course. A slight wind did not help their shots, either, particularly on the front nine. Mrs. Whitworth, the runnerup in last year’s tournament, had three bogeys and as many birdies for her first day. “I just settled back and hit it a little better on the back nine,” she said.
