COATESVILLE NEWS by Joe Davidson, Correspondent
Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Smyth and son, Ted, have returned from a visit with their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Smyth at Charleston, S. C. While there they visited lovely public gardens ablaze with bright flowers, historical places that date back to Revolutionary
days, a naval base with ships day last week.
open for inspection and a sub-
marine.
Their son, Captain John Smyth, is a teacher of physical education at the State Military
College.
Mr. and Mrs. John Larison and sons of Danville called on Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pfister one
Dale Lisby and Janet Hanlon were first place trophy winners Saturday at the United States Twirling Association Contest held at Lafayette. Others who placed in their agt groups were Vickie Storm, Myra Hanlon and Anita Lisby. Harmon Hathaway and L. A. Fleenor attended a Methodist meeting in Frankfort Sunday afternoon. Mr. Hathaway drove to Cincinnati Monday morning to deliver 500 Primitive Baptist song books he had printed. At a recent W.S.C.S. meeting at the local Methodist
Church impressive devotions were given by Mrs. Daisy Knight, assisted by other members who read scripture texts. Mrs. Lucille Hasten was nominated as President for the coming year and Mrs. Alta Fleenor for Secretary. Mrs. Hasten related a story of a Sunrise Easter service at Win-ston-Salem, N. C. She then followed with the story of how the Moravian brotherhood came to Coatesville and established a church where Mr. and Mrs. Joe Davidson now have their home. In the Davidson back lot is the little cemetery and the name of
Spaugh on some old stones. Two Phillips brothers were in the brotherhood, one brother being the grandfather of the late Atlas Phillips. On April 15, Cascade will hold a band and choral contest. On April 28 will be the junior high band and chorus program and on April 29 the junior-senior prom will take place at the Sheraton-Lincoln Hotel. These are a few of the major events staged for the final month of school. Among the high school track teams of Hendricks County it looks as if Brownsburg could
whip any squad in maybe two or three counties. They are far too good for Lebanon, Plainfield and Danville. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bottorff were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Powell at Franklin. Tuesday the Cloverdale baseball team came to Cascade. Cadet pitcher Joe Jones did the twirling for six innings and Calvert finished the game. The Cadets were the victors by a 1-0 score. This resembled a big league game. Mr. and Mrsl Charles Coffey and family were Sunday visi-
tors of Mr .and Mrs. Donald Millikan at Nineveh. National Library Week is from April 16-22. Someone has correctly summarized the worth of the library for all school boys and girls in the one short sentence: “Reading is the key.” John Milton, the great English poet made this statement about books: “A good book is the precious life blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.” During Library Week at the Coatesville Library two Cascade
High School girls will be ‘‘li-
brarians for a day.” The two young ladies will be Miss Bonnie Moore and Miss Brenda Ellett Mrs. Sylvia Hurst, wellknown to Cloverdale, Belle Union and Coatesville citizens, passed away Friday at the Putnam County Hospital. She had for some time been a patient in the Eventide Nursing Homs. Burial will be at Stilesville. Coatesville ladies are talking these warm days of house cleaning and it brings to mind a story of house cleaning long ago. (Continued on Page 5)
