Th* one-two scoring leaders last season in Putnam County basketball are undecided on which colleges they will attend. After considering hundreds of college scholarships the two have narrowed the list to approximately four. each. Mike Trover, who led the county with a 31.9 average and a 45 per cent average from the field, is considering universities from each section of the country. His choices are presently Cornell. Indiana University, New Mexico, and Washington University. Larry Steele of Bainbridge wants to stick close to home, but still can’t quite decide on whether he wants to play guard or forward. Kentucky wants his 26.2 average in the backcourt, as does Purdue. Indiana University and Butler just want the outstanding senior in their starting line-up. The IHSAA released the standards of performance which high school track participants must better in a meet before they are eligible for the track sectionals. According to some of the early times posted, area teams are going to have to hustle to meet the minimum standards.

Supreme Court Refuses Clay's Exemption Request

WASHINGTON UPI — The Supreme Court refused Monday to order a draft postponement for heavyweight champion Cassius Clay, scheduled for induction into the Army on April 28. Clay, who filed an appeal under his Black Muslim name of Muhammud Ali, is claiming exemption on the ground that he is a minister of that sect. He contended also that Negroes have been discriminated against in the Selective Service System.

The champion was summoned to report for induction at Houston, Tex., after he had transferred his draft status there from Louisville, Ky.

Clay still has an appeal pending before the U.S. Circuit Court at Cincinnati and should he lose there he would be en-

titled to return to the Supreme Court. But for the time being at least, the high epurt has rejected his request that his induction be delayed and that a threeman lower court be ordered to hear his claims that the entire draft system is unconstitutional. The 25-year-old champion has hinted that he may refuse to report for induction—a move which could land him In jail for draft dodging. Clay’s attorney charged in a brief filed with the Supreme Court Thursday that only two Negroes had ever served on the local boards in Louisville and Houston. This discriminated against Negroes, the appeal argued.

Maple Leafs Need One More

TORONTO UPI — The Terry Sawchuk story continues tonight with the Toronto Maple Leafs trying to close a chapter on one of the greatest goalie comebacks in Stanley Cup hockey history. Sawchuk, donning skates and protective gear only because starting goalie Johnny Bower suffered a finger injury, has brought the Leafs to a commanding 3-2 lead over the Chicago Black Hawks in the best-of-seven semi-final series. A victory tonight sets up an all-Canada final with the Montreal Canadiens, who swept the New York Rangers in four straight If the National Hockey League champion Black Hawks win, the series goes back to Chicago for the final game of the match-up Thursday night. Sawchuk made 127 saves in the first four games and stopped another 36 shots on goal in two periods Saturday. He went into the net after a shakey opening period performance by Bower who was playing his first game of the series. The Leafs have a record of five wins, three losses and one tie record over the Hawks in Toronto and are favored to win tonight Chicago Coach, Billy Reay, was confident, however, that the Hawks would win tonight and again in Chicago. He said he was “satisfied with the way we played Saturday and we’ll be back in Chicago Thursday.” Leaf Captain George Armstrong was a probable starter for tonight’s game. He has been out* of the lineup with a knee injury since last Sunday.

The San Francisco Giants, who host the Cardinals tonight find themselves on the reverse side of the treadmill, having lost five of six starts. Willie Myers, the $125,000 center fielder, has been out of action since the third game with a muscle injury in his left leg and Juan Marichal, the $100,000 pitcher, has been beaten twice.

Strangely, or perhaps not so strange, the only team without a win is the National League champions from Los Angeles. The Dodgers, minus Sandy Koufax, have lost four straight and tonight are at home to the streaking Cincinnati Reds, who are 5-1.

In the American League, the world champion Baltimore Orioles are carrying on as expected. They lead the circuit with a 4-2 record and have gotten strong performances from two of their question-mark pitchers Jim Palmer and Steve Barber, who was sent to Rochester when the season started, pitched a one-hitter upon his return Sunday. Baltimore is idle today.

The Minnesota Twins, picked by many to challenge for the pennant, are in the cellar with a 1-4 record and two of the losses were incurred by Jim Kaat, who won 25 games in 1966. The Twins also get a day off.

In American League games today, Washington is at New York, Boston at Chicago and California at Detroit. In the other National League contests, New York is at Pittsburgh, the Cubs at Philadelphia and Houston at Atlanta, all at night.
