be any single answer that can apply to an people, hi all situations, everywhere. The answer faweNae morel, spiritual, religious, and psychological values, in addition to the medical ones. Fhysictaw carefully balance *31 coaaidawtion* befbre they ‘decide whether or not n patient should be told that they have a cancerous or terminal disease. The guiding light to that decision probably lice in tha question they must aSk themselvee. Win it be to the patient’s greatest emotional advantage? Know Patients Intimately The family doctor must sometimes make this decision in conjunction with the spiritual advisor if they are to bring the greatest inner peace to the patient Doctors, especially those in the general practice of medicine, know their patients and the patients’ families intimately. They know the social problems well enough to be in an excellent position to offer the most humane approach to such difficult situations. The family, too, must by their attitude, enter into the final judgment as to whether the truth should be told. Borne patient* taafst that they he told the entire treth 1m order to ptam and smug* the future and the destiny of their family. Others would rather blockade end blot out the truth because they are unable to fa** 13m recthty. There patients must be gtren the comfort of the "he” that bring* them the greatest »cne* of security.
I have known doctor* deapn* ■tely ID with malignant disease who have, up to the very last moment, pretended that their iUrm was not a serious one. They found it easier to deny tire severity of their illness. Some patients present all the outward appearances of strength and wnotional stability and say, "Please doctor, tell me the truth." These very same patients may go into a tail spin of etitatfeoal upheaval when they are actually told the rerioumees Cl their disease. We in the practice of medicine hav*, cm the other hand, sew frail, sensitive people draw on their own inner strength, inner reserve and ooursge when they are faced with the truth rather than, the fears of the unknown. Painful Deeistaa It is apparent, then, that such discussion can only be a personal, highly individually one, based on cultural, intellectual and emotional background. There is probably no more painful decision that a doctor must make than this one. The right of that decision unfortunately con only be seen in retrospect by witnessing its effect on the tranquillity of the patient Sometimes the doctor and the patient’s family are totally wrong. In such a delicate situation there must always be error. However, when that decision has been arrived at by mature and sincere judgment there should be no guilt if occasionally that decision is a wrong one. No, there is no universal answer to this complex question. There is universal kindness and understanding that can give to the patient constant awareness Of devoition. e • • SPEAKING OP TOUR HEALTH—When did you last hare a i—iplel* eye examination? Mini Accident HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, England UPI —Peter Wood, vice chairman of the local accident prevention committee, explained how he suffered a bump on his head. "I was walking down the street when a girl in a miniskirt attracted my attention. Next thing I knew was that I had walked straight into a shop blind.” Wood proposed raising shop blinds higher rather then dropping hemlines lower.
