Moderns’ Swingers News The Moderne’ Swingers danced April 1st to Ray McVay and his very talented wife, Betty. They were both in great form and all the dancers seemed to enjoy the M c V a y ■. Betty brought the house down with her “hash” and the crowd called for more. The Moderne’ Swingers have a busy time, as usual, and had on hand April 7th, Johnny Wykoff of Indianapolis. The club was very proud to see so many faces from so far away. They were from Crawfordsville, Fillmore, Greencastle, Waveland, Tuscola, HI., Mohamet, HI., Villa Grove, HI., Newman, HI. Three of these clubs brought more than one square and the Hlinois clubs were two of them. The calling was smooth and everyone in attendance gave Johnny many ovations throughout the evening. He well deserved the praise as the calling was outstanding. Several new things were taught to the dancers by the most capable Mr. Wykoff and a splendid time was had by all. Time ran out much too soon for all the dancers. The Moderne’ Swingers will dance again April 15th to their own caller, Ted Laughrey of Terre Haute. All dancers are welcome to attend.

MOOSE DANCE Saturday April 15 9:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Music By "THE TOP HATS" Members Only

Defender Must Learn Declarer’s Maneuvers By Alfred Sheinwold Everybody knows that declarer must sometimes begin the play of the trump suit by leading a low trump. This gets one round of trumps out and enables declarer to keep his top trumps for control of the hand. Only a studious bridge player knows that the same type of play must sometimes be made by a defender. East dealer East-West vulnerable NORTH A Q 10 9

for the doubleton, but should deduct a point or so for having an aceless hand and perhaps another point because the queen of hearts is not really worth 2 points in high cards and another point for shortness.

When today’s hand was played a few weeks ago in the ann u a 1 Intercollegiate Bridge Championships, West opened the eight of hearts, and East won the first trick with the 10. East’s problem was to get the trumps out of the dummy so that he could get four heart tricks. Some defenders went at it like a bull at a gate. They led the ace of trumps, then the king and finally the low trump. South ran the diamonds, discarding all of his losing hearts. A few defenders started with the king of spades, stopped for thought and then led the low spade. This was no better. South ran the diamonds to discard his hearts, and East’s ruff came much too late to do any good. BEST DEFENSE The only defense was for East to lead his low spade at the second trick. If South tried to run the diamonds, West would ruff the third diamond with his worthless trump. West would then lead another heart, whereupon East would win and draw the rest of dummy’s trumps before taking the setting trick with a high heart. Dear Heloiae: This particular letter concerns plastic lids—the kind found on coffee cans, shortening, dog food, baby food cans, etc. Never throw plastic lids away! Try them first on your bowls, jelly glasses, and water bottles. I find that the three-pound shortening and two pound coffee lids fit exactly on my small soup bowls. With a wax crayon, I mark the contents on the lids before storing leftovers in the small bowls in the refrigerator . . . sometimes stacking them to save space. The wax markings wash off easily and they are ready for the next leftovers. I also snap a plastic lid on all opened cans before placing them in the refrigerator for storing. The three-pound shortening and two-pound coffee can lids snap on a pint-sized syrup can. Also dog food lids fit the tops of canned condensed or evaporated milk and chocolate syrup, etc. Just look around the kitchen and try these lids on everything. It will surprise you how many containers they fit and how many new uses you’ll find for them. Mrs. Betty Golbow e e * e Dear Heloise: We live in a very large subdivision and are striving for privacy. I put nylon net behind each of my bedroom drapes. During the day when the drapes are open the nylon net covers the windows, thus making them private. I can see out perfectly but others can’t see in unless a light is on in the room. Linda Colbert e e * e Dear Heloise:
