front, however, will be DePamv’s doubleheader baseball game at 1 p.m. with Indiana State University. The Sycamores are the ICC’s codefending champion. DePauw enters the ICC opener with 4 2-1 record, compiled with a twin sweep over Marian last weekend and a 9-3 loss to Indiana Central March 31. Trounced by Ball State in an indoor meet last week, the Tiger cinder squad moves to Crawfordsville Saturday where it will enter the Wabash College Relays. Coach Bob Harvey is expected to take some 20-plus men to this event where DePauw traditionally has done well, including last year's cochampionship. And Coach Ted Katula’s golf team will find out how much it learned from a spring vacation

training trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. DePauw, Purdue, Illinois State U., and Indiana State are paired for a four-team golf match on Purdue’s sprawling course in West Lafayette. Weekend rest comes only for the university’s tennis squad which played five matches in five days during its southern trip. Taking two out of five matches, the Tigers beat the University of Chattanooga 9-0, and Sewanee 8-1, but lost to Southern Illinois 8-1, Western Kentucky University 8-1, and Middle Tennessee State University 5-4. The team returns to action, hosting Indiana University and Valparaiso, April 11 and April 15, respectively.

| Utley Sets New 200-Yard Record
DALLAS UPI — BUI Utley of Indiana and Mike Burton of UCLA used the opening night of action in the men’s national AAU indoor swimming championships to atone for their defeats in the NCA~~ finals, but Burton’s triumph had a somewhat hollow ring. Utley smashed aU existing American records, pending and otherwise, Thursday night when he whipped out a 1:55.9 in the 200-yard individual medley to avenge his NCAA defeat at the hands of Dick Roth of Stanford and the Santa Clara Swim Club. Burton equaled the pending American mark of 4:37.0 in winning the 500-yard freestyle. But he missed his anticipated chance of beating Stanford's Greg Buckingham who had defeated him in the NCAA event while setting the record that Burton matched. Buckingham waa stricken with a stomach upset Thursday placed in the Southern Methodist University Infirmary.

Expect Banner Year on Cinders INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Indiana’s high school track campaign may be a week or two away from blossoming into an all-out assault on the records, but indications are it will be another banner year for the runners, jumpers and weight men. Last season was the best ever for Hoosier cinder stars, with five all-time records going into the book in addition to an automatic standard when the twomile run was added to the program. The classy 1966 campaign made Indiana the third-best state, based on state meet records reported to the National Federation of High School Athletic Associations—third only to the perennial track and field powers of California and Texas. Four stars who grabbed five first places in the state meet last May are back, headed by classy Don Vandrey of Valparaiso, who is shooting to break the four -minute mile this spring. The others back include Howard Doughty of Fort Wayne North in the high and low hurdles, Mike Cummins of Indianapolis Washington in the long jump, and Danny Jones of Greensburg in the 440. In addition, the field Includes Jim Teter of Lawrence Central, runnerup in the pole vault, and Larry Highbaugh and Ivory Giles of Indianapolis Washington, third in both sprints and third in the high jump, respectively in last year’s state meet. The biggest loss, through graduation, was Clyde Peach of Brebeuf, the greatest sprinter in Hoosier schoolboy history —now going great guns as a freshman at Baylor.

SHEINWOLD ON BRIDGE
Students Must Leant To Conserve Trumps By Alfred Sheintrold If you read the newspapers very carefully you may discover that some college students are not conservative. Perhaps that accounts tar their failure to make four spades when they played today’s hand in the annual intercollegiate championships held last month in several hundred colleges.

$Mtfc yftmt 14 P«« 34 tm 4 4 All PaK Opening 9 Q South had a problem if West opened the queen of hearts. The reckless sort of student who didn’t think of conserving his trumps would play the king of hearts from dummy at the first trick. East won with the Rce of hearts and returned A heart, making South ruff. When South then drew trumps he had only one trump left.
Gogolak Injured FORT WASHINGTON UPI —New York Giant place kicking specialist Pete Gogolak has been transferred to Walter Reed Hospital from Walson Army Hospital in Fort Dix, N. J. Gogolak will undergo observation, evaluation and treatment for an old back injury. On March 14 Gogolak fell down a flight of stairs in his barracks at Fort Dix.
Now South hid to knock out two ices to make his contract. When he knocked out the ace of diamonds (if he tried that suit first), back would come a heart, and South had to use up his last trump. Eventually, East would get in with the ace of clubs and would defeat the contract with his last heart PLAYS LOW South makes the contract by conserving his trumps more carefully. He must play a low heart from the dummy at the first trick. If West leads another heart, South can be forced to ruff once. But dummy will play the 10 if West leads a low heart at the second trick and will play the king if West leads the jack of hearts. This develops a heart trick in the dummy so that the defenders cannot make South ruff twice. South ruffs the second heart, draws trumps and knocks out the ace tt diamonds. If East
Brabender Optioned MIAMI UPI—The Baltimore Orioles got down within two of their 28-man player limit that must be reached by April 11 Thursday by optioning pitcher Gene Brabender to their Rochester farm club of the International League. Brabender, a 6-foot-5 righthander who had a 4-3 record with the Orioles last year, had pitched only seven innings this spring due to a blister on his finger and an attack of tonsilitis.
returns a heart, South doe* not have to ruff. This gives declarer time to knock out the ace of clubs and thus make the contract under the protection Of his last trump. DAILY QUESTION As dealer you hold: 3-Ql6; H-K 10 9; D-K J 9 7; C-K J 9 7. What do you say? Answer: Pass. You have 18 points in high cards end 1 point for the doubletom but Should discount a point or so for the doubleton queen of spades (which is not worth 2 points in high cards and also 1 point as a doubleton) and perhaps another point because the hand is aceless. You wouldn’t go to jail for opening this hand, but an expert would pass it
