170 Miles-Per-Hour Lap Fillmore Nosed In First Expected at Speedway Tratk Meet b * Cha,lt0 "

INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Everything being equal, this is the year of the 170-miles-per-hour lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the No. 1 contender to crack the barrier is none other than pint-size Mario Andretti. The little native Italian holds

the official 500-mile race qualifying record of nearly 166 mph, set last year, and since then he has flirted with the 170 mph mark several times in tire tests. That isn’t saying that the cowinner of last Saturday’s 12hour endurance run at Sebring, Fla., will average 170 mph for

Chuvalo Wants Clay Fight

MIAMI BEACH BPI—Before Canadian heavyweight George Ghuvalg stepped out of the Miami Beach Auditorium with a TKO victory over hometowner Willie Bessmanoff, his manager waa clamoring for a crack at the mug and title of Cassius Clay. Chuvalo, who now boasts a boxing record of 46-12-2 and

that he has never been knocked off his feet, scored the technical knqckout in 1:08 of the third round Tuesday night over the lighter Bessmanoff before 3,716 fans. Chuvalo’s manager, Irving Ungerman, claimed that Clay’s promoters were keeping his boy “on a string” despite “our offer guaranteeing him (Clay) a $250,000 purse to fight in Detroit.” Ungerman said Clay will be fighting Patterson for $100,000 less than his offer in Las Vegas and then accused Clay of being “afraid to meet” Chuvalo again. Clay two. years ago won a decision over Chuvalo after they went a full 15 rounds. Chuvalo, at 217 pounds, connected with a left hook that sent the 198% pound Bessmanoff sprawling on the canvas in the third. He got up on the eight count, was staggered by two rapid lefts before going down under a smashing right. He was on his feet again at eight but the referee stopped it there.

his four-lap test, but even that is considered possible. The experts point to tremendous improvements in equipment — from chassis to tires — for the blistering speeds expected when the famed 2%-mile oval opens for “500” practice April 29. “Awesome” might be a better description, for it was a short five years ago that Parnelli Jones became the first speedster to officially crack the 150 mph barrier at the Speedway. An indication of the speeds to come was the brilliant debut last week of Andy Granatelli’s revolutionary turbine - powered car driven by Jones and former race winner Jimmy Clark of Scotland at speeds in the 162163 mph bracket. The jubilant Granatelli, who has also entered a rear-engine Novi in the 51st annual holiday classic on Memorial Day, planned only some minor changes before eyeing the time trials next month. Andretti, also winner of a 500mile stock car race at Daytona Beach, Fla., during the winter, will have his choice of two rearengine machines powered by Ford V8 engines. One is the same machine which he used in setting his speed records on the first day of qualification runs last May to, grab the pole position. The other is a new car of similar design. The final field will not be known for about two weeks. The entry deadline is April 15 and Speedway officials expected a record number of about 90, surpassing the all-time high of 84 in 1953. As usual, however, only the fastest 88 qualifiers start the race. If the final field Is a record, it will be because many of the top drivers insist on a back-up car — just in case something happens tq the machine they plan to qualify. In most cases, they are as nearly duplicates as possible. A great surge to make the 500” a real international spectacle also is attributed to the expanded field. Clark and England’s Graham Hill, last year’s winner, will head the foreign field that also will include Scotland’s Jackie Stewart, who had last year’s race won until his car conked out 10 laps from the finish, and newcomers Lorenzo Bandini and Lucien Bianchi of Italy and Chris Amqn of New Zealand. The huge payoff, which has jumped from $367,850 in 1960 to more than $690,000 last May and which may reach $700,000 this year, is luring more and more stars from the international road racing set. Meanwhile, the racing oval in Speedway City was closed to all but the ground crews. It will take them to the end of the month to get the track in tiptop shape for the race against the clock.

Schedule Meeting The Bainbridge Junior baseball league will hold a meeting Thursday evening at 7:30 in the Lions Hall. All interested parents are urged to attend.

Williams Sets State Record

Elliott Lee Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Williams, Route 1, Greencastle, set an Indiana State University school record in high jump last Saturday. The Greencastle High school graduate and Indiana State University sophomore high jumped 6’ 7%” in an early season conditioning meet against Anderson, Vincinnes and Evansville. No scores were kept in this warm-up meet.

Pro Draft Begins May 3 NEW YORK UPI — The Detroit Pistons lost the coin flip last year-but won out in the end. This year the Pistons could win the flip-and yet eventually could lose out. That’s the story of the National Basketball Association’s coin flip today between the last place teams of each division-Detroit and Baltimore -for the right to pick first in Its annuaul college draft May 3. For practical purposes, the flip is for Providence’s AllAmerica Jimmy Walker, who’s considered a virtual cinch to be grabbed first. But this year it doesn’t mean the winner of the flip will automatically get Walker since the American Basketball Association (ABA) will start its first year of operation this fall. A war resembling the one in pro football until the recent merger may result and Walker, drafted by Indianapolis of the ABA, will be one of the prime prizes. The ABA conducted its draft Sunday and picked 130 of the nation’s top seniors. Last year the Pistons lost the coin flip to the New York Knicks, who immediately grabbed college “Player of the Year” Cazzie Russell of Michigan. The Pistons were “stuck” with Syracuse’s Dave Bing as the second choice. Bing went on to become the NBA’s Rookie-of-the-Year while Russell had trouble adjusting to pro ball and was a disappointment with the Knicks. This year Detroit gets two of the first five picks since they received Los Angeled No. 1 pick when the Rudy LaRusso deal fell through. Two days before the NBA holds its annual draft on May 3, it will stock its new franchises at San Diego and Seattle from a player pool furnished by the 10 existing teams.

GHS Lmksmen Start Tliursday The Greencastle High School Golf Team will travel to Crawfordsville for their first golf meet of the spring. Last years 10-4 record should fall this year with four lettermen returning to play. The lettermen are Mike Surber, Rob Lyon, Clark Finkbiner, and Dan Mont. The other members of the team are Ronnie Smith, Ron Code, Jay Frye, Terry Ross, Jay Boyd and Robert New. The individual record (shared by Troyer and Lyon) of seventy-five on the Windy Hill course should be broken this spring. This years team will have much more experience. Made up of sophomores and juniors last year, they are now predominantly juniors. Last year’s inexperienced team lost to tough Crawfordsville, 6-4. But the Cubs are working hard for revenge. Although Crawfordsville will be playing on their own course, it should still be a close match. This year’s team will be top contenders, for the WIC crown. The other teams will be Clinton, Honey Creek, Wiley, Shulte and Brazil. Last years team finished fourth in the WIC meet and 14 of 27 in the sectionaL Everyone is invited to attend the Cub’s first home meet 4:00 April 12 at Windy Hill.
