COATESVILLE NEWS by Joe Davidson, Correspondent
Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Hatha* way, Mrs. Doris Runnells and daughter, Joanna, and Roy Cook were Sunday afternoon visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Hathaway in Indianapolis. Mrs. Marjorie Wingler, who ' has been a patient in the Putnam County Hospital for sev- . eral days, was dismissed Friday.
Mrs. Herbert Brown went to the Putnam County Hospital for several days was dismissed Friday. Mrs. Herbert Brown went to the Putnam County Hospital Monday morning for an X-ray checkup. Indiana State University students of Coatesville and vicin-
ity have had their Easter vacation and a few started to Terre Haute Monday evening. They were those who had early morning classes. Mrs. Gene Johnson and son, Joe, of Plainfield, accompanied by Mrs. Mable Davidson, spent Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. The big attraction was the L. S. Ayres and Wm. H. Block Easter entertainment for children held in their auditoriums. There was a happy homecoming at the Elston Herrin. residence this past week when two sons who have been in army
service, Charles and Carrol, came from near Frankfort, Germany, and Glasgow, Montana. They were looking unusually well and spoke of being quite happy with the work required of them at camp. They will be with parents and kinsmen for about two weeks. Carroll is to be married to a Montana young lady when he returns to the army post, and when Charles gets back on European sqil he will be sent to Spain. We wonder sometimes if the following is the space-age philosophy: “When buying, try to
get the mostest for the leastest, and if work is to be tendered, give the leastest for the mostest,” or has it always been thus? “The Indianapolis News” carried the story of the death of James Wright at an Elkhart hospital Sunday. He was publisher of a Wakarusa, Ind., newspaper. This man of*43 years was the son of James and Bessie : Wright, who were natives of Putnam County. Very few people in Coatesville knew this man, but many remember his father, “Jim,” and his mother. Young James was a graduate of
Danville High School and a graduate of the School of Journalism at Indiana University where, as an undergraduate, he worked on the “Daily Student.” His father, Jim, was a principal of a number of Hendricks County schools and his uncle “Gon” Wright was for several years County Superintendent of Putnam County Schools. Mr. Wright leaves a wife, a daughter and two sons, all at home. Funeral services were held at Roachdale where his mother resides. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Herod were visitors in Cloverdale on
Sunday and they reported that they saw state police cars all over the town and people about their visitors’ home were locking doors against a possible robbery. It ail turned out to be a hoax. Mrs. Rhonda Keller of Fillmore High School, who won the prize offered by the Fillmore Lions Club with her essay on; “Peace,” was a district winner at Lafayette the past week and she now enters her essay in State competition. We folks of Fillmore and Coatesville wish her lots of luck. Joe Harper, a former citizen,
but now of Plainfield, was in town Wednesday morning shaking hands with old acquaintances. This is the first time Joe has been with us in many months. Handy Bowen, the teenage son of Mr. and Mrs. Noble Bowen, suffered a broken left arm while operating a skate board Monday evening. He was taken to the hospital at Greencastle Tuesday morning and the fracture was X-rayed and set His mother has been extremely ill the past week but is now slowly recovering. (Continued on Page 6)
