Tigers Down Marian Twice in Doubleheader
By beating Marian College twice Saturday, DePauw’s baseball team recorded its first twin sweep in two years. The Tigers won the opener behind the two-hit pitching of Dick Walker, 5-4. Leighton Turner turned the trick in the seveninning nightcap, 7-2. The victories upped the winners’ record to 2-1 and left codefending ICC champion Indiana State on deck for a doubleheader here next Saturday at 1 p.m. Walker’s early wildness allowed Marian to make a game of it in the first contest when the Knights picked up two runs in both the first and second innings. Fortunately DePauw didn’t do badly either. Bunching their hits, the Tigers got safties in the bottom of the first from Dick Bigelow, Steve Murray, Barrie Krause and Dick Gregory. Helped by a pair of errors, it all added up to four big runs.
The game was to remain scoreless the rest of the way except for the Tiger fifth when the margin of victory came along. With two outs, Don Lovelace singled, stole second and scored on Krause’s double. DePauw jumped ahead 3-0 in the second game. Marian closed to 3-2 on a two-nm homer by Duke Hynek. Krause and Steve Walker (Dick’s little brother) doubled and Gregory drove them home wtih a single. Gregory made it 6-2 moments later on an error and DePauw got its seventh run in the sixth. Definite Action Due on Clay-Patterson Fight DETROIT UPI — If the Cassius Clay-Floyd Patterson fight on April 25th at Olympia Stadium is going to become a reality, some definite action is expected today. Olympia’s Nick Londes said Sunday that if the E&J Sports Club of Detroit is going to put on the fight, they are going to have tq come up with some money today before anything can be signed. The Sports Club’s attorney, Eddie D. Smith, last week made a reported offer of a 5250,000 guarantee to Clay to fight Patterson in Detroit. Clay and his manager Herbert Muhammad have been reportedly interested in the fight but nothing has been signed as of yet. With Clay facing an Army induction on April 28, a fight against Patterson would enable him to squeeze in one last payday before he either accepts Army induction or rejects it and takes a jail term instead. Clay beat Patterson, the only man ever to lose and regain the heavyweight title, on a 12-round TKO in 1965 in Las Vegas.

clean in the broad jump, high jump, triple jump, mile, two mile, 60-yard dash and the javelin. DePauw did get some satisfaction, however, with the 15man crew that showed up for the spring vacation meet. Steve Cagle took first in the shot put and third in the discus. Cagle’s winning put was 46-3 and his discus throw, his first in collegiate competition, was 111-2. Doug Smith won the pole vault event with a leap of 12-0, and Rick Jordan scored the Tigers’ final first with a :51.3 clocking in the 440-yard dash. Has teammate Dan Blaney took third in the 440. DePauw picked up other points on a pair of seconds by sophomore Ted Fergus in the 60-yard high and low hurdles, a second by Steve Norris in the 880 run (1:58.8) and a third in the same event by Dan Spear who finished in 1:59.2. Fred Gamble of Ball State had a 6-4% high jump leap while State’s Dave Kerr stepped the mile in 4:18.4. DePauw is at the Wabash Relays next weekend and then entertains it own big invitational meet April 15.
team is bringing along its finest assemblage of added variety acts signed in all parts of the world. These turns will go on before the start of the game and also between halves. It’s the forty-first consecutive season of worldwide activity for the mighty Trotters, who are continuing on at the especial willed request of the late Abe Saperstein, their founder, owner and coach who passed away of a heart attack March 15, 1966. The 1966-67 squad is in full keeping with Saperstein tradition. It’s tall, talented, starstudded and replete with showmanship and comedy finesse. Only great players have survived the cuts after tryouts embracing a large and capable group of candidates. The coaching is in the hands of the veteran Bobby Milton, who had been with Saperstein as a player and aid for almost two decades. The opposing team was chosen with great care, to be sure to have a club that would put the super-Trotters to a good test. The added attractions are of the superior mold Abe would have wanted.
