South thinks ahout refusing the trick but sees that a shift to hearts would give him an awkward time if West had K-Q of hearts and East had K-Q of clubs. South, therefore wins the first trick with the ace of spades and leads a club in the hope of developing four or five club tricks.

Now South leads another club, and West discards a heart. Once again South must display restraint by refusing to play dummy’s ace of clubs. East must take his queen of clubs, and the defenders are then powerless. South can win any suit that East returns, and declarer can then lead his last club and win in dummy with the ace. The rest of the clubs are then good (which is exactly why South must wait so long before taking dummy’s ace of clubs), and declarer takes four clubs, two spades, two diamonds and one | heart. If South won an earlier club trick in the dummy he would win only one club trick instead of four. Daily Question Partner opens with 1-NT (16 to 18 points), and the next play-

If partner bids two hearts, you will jump to four hearts; if he bids anything else, you can bid three diamonds or three notrump.

NEW YORK UPI — Wright Investor’s service says the Federal Reserve Board's move in cutting the discount rate would be bullish for both the short and long term of the stock market but it does not insure against interim price reactions. The company says the 1967 stock market has recovered much more of last year’s losses than the Dow Jones industrial average would indicate. It feels therefore, an intermediate price reaction, particularly in the many speculative issues, would not be surprising before summer.

Standard & Poor says the easing in the money market and special demand factors may lead to temporary market buoyancy. It feels since the market is poised near its old high and will soon have it digest some poor earnings and possibly some adverse economic news, it would recommend ah increasingly selective policy on purchasing stocks.

Stanley Hiller Sc Co. says it believes a bullish approach to the present stock market is warranted only on a technical basis. The company says present economic realities have as yet not shown even the slightest sign of following the expectations of the general list.

Edward A. Vlner St Co., says the administration’s recent fiscal and monetary moves to bolster the economy are being interpreted favorably by investors and with this type of sentiment taking hold, the company says it would ride with the current trend. However, it advises a closeout of trading positions when price objectives are reached.

By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI — Raymond Burr, who gave us so many years of pleasure as television’s “Perry Mason,” showed up on NBC-TV Tuesday night movie in the new role he will play on video starting this fall. His appearance came in an original two-hour film called “Ironsides,” in which he portrayed a detective who works from a wheelchair after being shot. The production was a preview of Burr’s upcoming onehour NBC-TV series of the same name. The veteran actor is a heavyweight of the television medium because his presence and command fill the screen with a personal authority that transcends the trivia of most video scripts. And this fact was all too clear Tuesday night because, aside from Burr's personal contribution, the presentation was depressing in its appeal to the cliche Hollywood reactions to •jazzy” contemporary life, the younger generation and supposedly constructive views on

human relations. The idea of Burr operating as a detective in a wheelchair is not without appeal, and one hopes that the scripts and direction in the new series are on a more distinctive level. For if there were two basic elements that made “Perry Mason” so enjoyable for so long, they were impeccable professionalism and unquestionable good taste. The constant moviegoer, by the way, might recall that in the film “Rear Window,” Burr

was the villian who tried to kill a wheelchair-confined photographer (James Stewart) who uncovered him as a murderer. And years before that, Edward Arnold sleuthed around as a blind fellow who exposed bad guys with the aid of a seeingeye dog. Universal Studios, which produced ‘Ironsides,” might do well in the coming series to equate believability with the maddening glossiness for which the film company is so well known.
