mayor and school athletic eoorinator. However, Dillon said that since the mayor of Lafayette appoints part of the members of the board of trustees which operates the Lafayette school system, “this would create & conflict of interest” situation. “Suppose the salary of the co-ordinator of physical education were to come before the board? It would be the salary of the mayor who appoints the majority of the board,” Dillon said. However, Dillon said there is no legal barrier to prevent Crawley from holding his present or another job with the Lafayette school system while campaigning for the office of mayor. Dillon said the right of school teachers to be political candidates has been established through an Indiana Supreme Court ruling. “The question will come when and if he is elected and takes office,” Dillon said. Crawley told a news conference March 21 that he is resigning after 36 years as head basketball coach and had filed as a candidate for Lafayette mayor. He said he had been advised he could become coordinator of physical education and athletic programs for all Lafayette schools. Dillon said the key factor in the legal question was not one of dual office holding but of conflict of interest between a public office and a private job. “If the Lafayette school board members were elected and not appointed by the mayor, there would be no conflict of interest,” Dillon said. “But if you appoint the people who pass on your salary, there is a conflict.”

CHAMPAIGN, HI. Valek and Schmidt replaced football coach Pete Elliott and basketball coach Harry Combes, who resigned under Big Ten pressure after discovery of the illegal funds to aid athletes. Valek, a native of Joliet, 111., and an assistant coach at South Carolina last year, said he would retain the “Pete Elliott system” to facilitate the changeover.
