Once Over Lightly By Don Whitehead
Last Friday, a sneak preview was seen of the Indianapolis Sport Boat and Travel Show which is being held in the Fair* grounds Coliseum and Cattle Barn. The show continues through April 2. This is the first time that this reporter had ever visited such a show and even though all exhibits were not quite ready, it left quite an impression. Walking around the floor of the Coliseum, one sees many exhibits on fishing tackle and other outdoor equipment. But quite conspicuous are the many travel and vacation exhibits from Canada, the central section of the Midwest, and from the South. More specific, Onta* rio, upper and eastern Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee and Arkansas. Indiana has a booth encouraging Hoosiers to see Indiana first. Literature from every section of the State is proudly dis-
played and “Bayou Bill” Scrifres has a booth advertising the Indianapolis’s Big Fish Contest. Stage shows include a S00pound wrestling black bear, a 90-foot aerial pole act which breaks in half each performance, a comedy team of log rollers and canoe joisters and the two dog acts are presented each week night and on weekends. In the adjoining Cattle Bam, every available space is taken by the boat and camper displays. Every type of boat and motor sportsman dream about can be seen, from runabouts, small cruisers, fishing craft, canoes, sail boats and pontoon boats. Many lines of camping vehicles and equipment, including fold-out tent trailers, pickup truck campers, and vacation trailers can be seen. In fact, one could send a half day viewing the many styles.
Clay Manages Draft Dodge
LOUISVILLE, Ky. UPI — Attorneys for heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay have won a delay of his April 11th Army induction order. J. Allen Sherman, director of Clay’s local draft board here, said attorneys filed affidavits with the board stating that the champ’s legal residence is now Houston, Tex. As a result, his records were transferred Monday to Houston. “The transfer did away with

the April 11 induction order issued by this board,” Sherman said. “Clay’s case now goes to Houston and it will be up to that board to induct him in its next call.” Clay had been ordered to report for induction April 11 after losing a series of appeals on grounds he was a Black Muslim minister and a conscientious objector. “It’s a delaying tactic, no doubt about it,” Sherman said. “But it’s called for in the selective service law, and there’s no way to get around it." Sherman said, “it’s a clerical thing, done automatically when affidavits are filed and the request for transfer of records is made by any registrant."
Jockey Braulio Baeza successfully defended his money winning tide in 1966 by riding mounts that earned $2,940,812 —third highest total in racing history.

4 Thoroughbreds Perish in Fire LAUREL, Md. UPI — Firemen and track hands led 16 race horses safely out of a burning bam at Laurel race track Monday night but four thoroughbreds perished in the fire. Maryland state police said race horses named Friskie and Irish Charger died in the flames and two others, Look Out Prince and Harmo, were destroyed because of the extent of their injuries. A fifth horse was slightly injured. About a third of the track’s east side stable was destroyed, police said. They estimated the damage at $20,000 to $30,000. Juan Marichal Signs Monday PHOENIX, Ariz. UPI—Juan Marichal Monday ended a 29 day holdout, one of the longest in baseball history, when he signed a $100,000 contract with the San Francisco Giants. The contract made the 28-year-old native of the Dominican Republic only the third pitcher in baseball history to receive a six-figure salary. He won 93 games over the past four seasons and is generally regarded as the game’s top pitcher now that Sandy Koufax has retired. Marichal, a righthander, has been working out in Santo Domingo the past two weeks with a bunch of college players and thus isn’t too far from being in shape to open the season on April 11. He reported here at 194 pounds, only four pounds over his usual playing weight His signing came after a conference with club owner Horace Staneham and ended a salary squabble which had been conducted for over a month in telephone conversations. Marichal’s signing for $100,000 represented a capitulation of sorts. He had demanded $125,000 in the start of his negotiations with the Giants this year and had come down to $110,000 10 days ago when the Giants upped their offer to $100,000.
The big one doesn’t always get away as Cleo Arnold, Rural Route 1, Fillmore, can testify. Fishing approximately 12 miles out in the Pacific off the coast of Acapulco, Mexico, on March 14, Cleo hooked the above 12-foot Marlin, and approximately 1% hours later, his boat crew pulled the 300-pound-plus fish in. The boat captain informed Cleo that he didn’t know if his fish was a record or not, but it was the largest caught during the last three years. Thelma Arnold holds a type of shark that she caught during the venture. It was the first time the Arnolds had ever tried their hand at deep sea fishing, and he was using a 45-pound test line.
