By ROBERTA ROESCH Dear Roberta Roesch: Do you think a woman can regain her former shorthand skill without leaving home to take steno courses? At one time, I was fairly good at this skill. But even though I’ve kept up my typing, I haven’t done any shorthand for over 20 years. Now my return to an office is necessary, since my husband is ill and will never get well. Needs To Practice Due to my husband’s illness, I can’t get out to enroll in a

course, but I do need to prepare myself now for the job I will have to find. Do you have any suggestions? Mrs. D. A. Dear Mrs. D. A.: Tour letter makes it clear that you have a very strong will to accomplish what you have to do. „ The way to revive your lost shorthand skill is not apt to be easy when the illness of a loved one takes the heart out of living and involves you most of the time. But in the odd mo-

ments that you have, you can do what all women can do when they want to regain their stenographic skill on their own. Specified Steps Specifically, this will involve (1) reviewing a shorthand manual; (2) practicing briefs and forms; (3) writing all household and personal notations in shorthand (even if you have to add assorted improvisations to make sure that you can read them); (4) taking down televised or broadcast speeches and discussions and transcribing your notes on your typewriter; (6) asking friends to dictate letters and listen as you read them back. You can expect this routine to be difficult after 20 years of not doing it But if you keep at It diligently, you will find you can pick up your skill. Dear Roberta Roesch: Is is necessary to fill out a job application form when you

have a resume that tells more about you than the form would. I feel that application blanks

allow too little room for describing one’s full background. J.M. How To Do It Dear J. M.: Most employers want their own forms filled out even whan a job applicant has a resume. You can get around the lack of space by following the instructions on the blank to the letter, completing the form from beginning to end, and attaching your resume to it * . —— Reporters Jailed In Little Rock LITTLE ROCK, Ark. UPI —- Two young reporters were held in jail without bail Thursday because they refused to tell a grand jury the names of legislators allegedly offered bribes on a controversial gambling bill. A judge held the newsmen in contempt of court. The reporters insisted their information was privileged. Jack Baker, 27, and Michael Smith, 23, refused to divulge the names of lawmakers who had told them of bribe offers they had received to support a bill to legalize gambling in Hot Springs, Ark. They were imprisoned in Pulaski County jail. “They can get out of jail in 30 minutes if they answer the questions,” said Circuit Judge William Kirby. The judge said Baker of the Arkansas Gazette and Smith of the Pine Bluff Commercial, refused to reply when he and grand jury members asked the names of certain legislators.

Senator Says More Troops Will Be Needed In Viet

Kirby said the two reperttrs, who were being held without bond, could purge themselves of contempt of court if they would answer. Kirby said Baker and Smith claimed privilege under a state law. The law provides editors, reporters or other writers ean refuse to reveal the source of information used for news articles unless such articles were written in bad faith and with malice. The questions did not pertain to a published article and the law was not applicable, Kirby said. Rep. Gayle Windsor of Little Rock said March 7 he had been offered $1,000 to vote for the gambling bill. The legislature approved it but Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller vetoed it.

WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. John C. Stennis says the United States will have to intensify the war in Vietnam, and that this will mean sending more troops there than recently planned. Stennis, chairman of the Senate preparedness subcommittee, called for broader bombing or tragets in North Vietnam, including “destroying the docks” at the port of Haiphong, and increasing pressure on Communists on the ground in South Vietnam. Stennis, following up a report by hto subcommittee saying American troops were not getting all the troops they need, said “more troops have

been requested than have yet been sent." But he said that did not mean they would not be sent. The Mississippi Democrat said the number of U. S. combat troops in Vietnam probably would “come close’ to half a million this year. “My judgement is that more will be sent this calendar year than had been planned.” he said. Hie need for additional men Is the expanding American operation in the Viet Cong infested Mekong Delta. Stennis, one of the Senate’s top military experts, said North Vietnam President Ho Chi Minh’s rejection of President Johnson’s bid for peace talks

left little alternative but to intensify pressure on the Communists. He said that "it the only way out” Stennis called for bombing of all factories that contributed to the North Vietnamese war effort, cutting off- Ho’e sea supply route by knocking out the harbor at Haiphong and i “eventually, we’ll have to hit ' those airfields” for the MIG jets around. Hanoi. Asked if he felt this wfcs worth the risk of possibly bringing Red China into the war, Stennis said, “I think we’ll have to take more chances.” But he said he did not believe the Chinese would Intervene.

My partner won the first trick with the king of diamonds, cashed the ace of diamonds and

led the queen of spades to the king. East returned the queen of clubs, and the king lost to the ace. Back came a low club

Every reader of this column would make the right play because it’s easy to see the ace of hearts in the West hand when you’re looking at all of the cards. The actual declarer didn’t have this advantage but he should have known that the East hand was the one place where the ace of hearts could not possibly be. East had already played the ace-king of spades and the queen-jack of clubs. If East also held the ace of hearts he would have held 14 points in high cards and would not have passed at his first turn. Since East could not hold the ace of hearts, South could have assured the contract by playing the king of hearts (instead of the jack) from dummy. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens one spade In third position (after two passes), and the next player passes. You hold: S-A K 7 4; H-Q 10 4; D-6 5 2; C-Q J 10. What do you say? Answer: Bid three spades. You have 12 points in high cards, but terrible distribution. The hand would not be quite

worth a jump to three spades if your partner opened in first or second position, but it is fully worth the jump raise when you have already passed.

to the 10, and East continued with the jack of clubs. South ruffed the third club and led the jack of spades to the ace. East returned a spade, and declarer drew trumps. Now he had to guess the heart play. My partner led a low heart from his hand, and West played low. The winning play was dummy’s jack if West held the queen of hearts, but dummy’s king if West held the ace of hearts. South frowned fiercely as he tried to guess. WRONG GUESS South played the jack of hearts from the dummy, and there went the contract. East took the queen of hearts and returned a heart to the ace. Down one.
