WHAT ARE NATION'S INTELLIGENCE NEEDS?
APPEALS TO PATROITISM SPARKED CIA ACTIVITIES
Washington Bow to spy is question
’ By HENRY CATHCART l Central Press Washington Correspondent •fY^ASHINGTON—The storm swirling around the methods of W Central Intelligence Agency operations affords the nation <n excellent opportunity to examine its own attitudes toward the whole matter of international intelligence. Congress should ]pok deep within itself, too. The present state of world affairs makes it imperative that the United States possess as much knowledge of the activities, plans and aspirations of other nations as it can gather. That statement is so obvious as not to need expressing. No one can challenge it on the
basis of reason.
Then, how and by what means and through what organizations must such, intelligence work be done? The very nature of the work requires the use of “cover” organizations, and it is obvious that if a cover is to be used, it must be the kind of organization that has a legitimate reason for stationing personnel and communications systems in the other nations under surveillance. How else should the United
_ ^ States go about getting trained eyes and ears [ to the location of intelligence needs? - The Central Intelligence Agency is the government’s instrument in this activity. And CIA has been able to set up and finance the movements and location of its "cover” personnel. It should be stressed that CIA has been successful in these undertakings, not on the basis of any profit to the cover organization and personnel, but rather through persuasive use of appeals to patriotism. In many instances the “cover” organizations working With the CIA are wealthy corporations or foundations which antered the activity willing to risk a part of their wealth and prestige to further what they were convinced was the best interests of the United States. Yet, whenever some glimmer of .these CIA cover activities finds its way into the press and into ‘Jhe consciousness of the public and Congress, the indignant howls
Oxe overwhelming.
We should not be puritanical, or that salve In these dangerous
times.
; • • • • • THE FRIENDLY BANKER—The U.S. Treasury Is rapidly running out of financial maneuvering room. Its bond sales in ^ ]>ehalf of the government are at the present statutory ceiling of $330 billions, and the law prevents it from raising any more money until Congress approves a higher ceiling. : — But this may not cause as much difficulty as some may expect. ' The Treasury Department has a friendly banker who will make loans without requiring any security, any bond issues, or any of the things that would be evidence that the Treasury had exceeded the legal debt limit ceiling. * Congress Is moving at its usual casual pace gi s loan » toward raising the ceiling by $6 billion, but it . - probably won’t be ready for presidential signa- WiM,out tun before the Treasury requires more money Security keep the wheels of government rolling. Bo the Treasury plans to go to its friendly banker—the Federal Reserve System—and borrow between $2 and $2.5 billion to tide ft over until It again has the legal authority to sell bonds in the financial markets.

Could Do Bedder
The Dally Banner, Greencastle, Indiana Thursday, March 23, 1967
NEW YORK (UPI) — The average homemaker will walk 64 miles and spend around 400 hours making beds during her lifetime. The people who say so, Spring Air Mattress Co., added that if she made the bed properly, she could cut the mileage by 75 per cent and the time by half. Instead of making a trip around the bed for each sheet and blanket, you’re supposed
to make the bed a quarter at| a time.

Aid For Reds HONG KONG UPI — The ketch Phoenix, manned by eight American self-styled pacifists and carrying $10,000 worth of medical suplies for the Communists, was sailing steadily southward Wednesday toward North Vietnam. The Americans, who call themselves the “Quaker Action Group,” are making the voyage in defiance of U. S. government warnings. There was some speculation here that ships of the U. S. 7th Fleet might intercept the 50-foot ketch and force it to turn back. But U. S. sources said they doubted any such action. The ketch, owned and skippered by Dr. Earle Reynolds of Yellow springs, Ohio, sailed out of Hong Kong for Haiphone shortly after noon. Reynolds, the group leader, was at the helm as the vessel moved slowly out of the harbor, passing 7th fleet warships on a holiday visit to this British crown colony.

Fuels About Tubul Pregnancy
Can you explain what a tuba! pregnancy is? Is it ever possible that a child will be bom alive and healthy in such a pregnancy? Mrs. J.R.T., Minnesota Dear Mrs. T. The process of becoming pregnant and eventually giving birth to a healthy child is a won- || der that defies i m a g i n a | tion. Physicians ' g who have de i! livered thousands of women of their children are never-end-ingly amazed Dr. Coleman that all the requirements for a living child can be fulfilled by the human body. Perhaps this analogy might indicate the magnitude of this phenomenon. Tending a thousand men on the moon and returning then intact on the very same day is an insignificant accomplishment compared to the beginning and completion of a normal pregnancy. Under normal circumstances the ovaries produce the female egg and discharge it during the period of ovulation. The egg then travels down the Fallopian tube Into the uterus or womb. When the male sperm meets and fertilizes the ripe egg or ovum it becomes imbedded In the wall of the womb, and begins its cycle of growth. It is at this site that the placenta forms and helps in the nourishment and growth of the embryo. The womb grows larger in order to accommodate the slowly growing fetus. This process continues until the normal 289 days have passed and the child is ready to be born. In a tubal pregnancy the male sperm has met and fertilised the female egg before it has descended into the uterus. If the fertilized egg becomes trapped in the Fallopian tube it may attach itself to the inner wall of the tube and actually begin to grow In this abnormal position. The early sighs and symptoms of pregnancy are the same for a tubal pregnancy as for a
uterine one. Later abdominal pain and bleeding alerts the doctor to the possibility of an ectopic, or tubal, pregnancy. The reasons why a tubal pregnancy happens once in about every 500 pregnancies is not always known. A kinking of the Fallopian tube, adhesions from infections and any abnormality in the tube may be responsible. Rarely, if ever, can a tubal pregnancy continue to full term. Cases have been reported in which the growing fetus breaks through the tube and sets up its growth pattern within the abdominal cavity. Miraculously & living child has even been bom under such strange conditions. Early In pregnancy women are followed very carefully to be sure that the progress is normal. Any signs of bleeding and abdominal pain make the doctor suspicious of a complication. There are many ways by which the doctor can confirm & tubal pregnancy. When he (Joes, he Intervenes early in order to prevent a rupture of the tube which may occur between the fourth and sixth week of this kind of pregnancy. Tubal pregnancy demands expert skill and surgery when once the diagnosis is made. At the time of operation the tube is removed. In rare instances is it possible for the surgeon to leave the tube. Healthy pregnancies can later occur if the other tube is functioning normally. The best advice for all women is to seek the care from their doctor from the very moment that pregnancy is established. • * • SPEAKING OF YOUR HEALTH—One of the causes of painful bursitis is a constant draft on the left shoulder while driving a car.
