(By Larry D. Hattfield) WASHINGTON UPI — With experts predicting that 1967 dairy imports will reach new highs as exports decline, American dairy farmers are getting more and more anxious for an import crackdown. The Agriculture Department’s latest forecast, issued Thursday, noted that world dairy conditions would encourage increased U.S. dairy imports again this year. Officially, the department is predicting that 3.5 billion pounds of milk equivalent will be imported in 1967. Unofficially, the experts say imports probably will be a million or more pounds higher than in 1966. Some private groups think the imports could go even higher, possibly to more than 4 billion pounds. Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman and other farm leaders are showing a growing concern about the soaring imports. Freeman has said he

Mrs. Aileen Overstreet has been confined to her home this week with the flu. Mrs. Daisy Alexander of Morton is now convalescing in the Christian Home in Greencastle. Mrs. Emma Wichmann has moved into her new home in Parkwood Village in Greencastle. Her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James White, have moved in the home where Mrs. Wichmann moved from on the farm. Mrs. Ira Hutcheson is spending a few weeks in Florida with her two daughters and their families, Mr. and Mrs. John Walls and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Cooper. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Irwin were in Indianapolis Sunday calling on Mrs. Raymond Kendall who is confined to a hospital and Claude Irwin, also confined to a hospital in Indianapolis. Mrs. Flossie Wood is back in the Putnam County Hospital
with a severe cold but hopes to return home in a few days.
thinks action should be taken to put a lid on dairy imports, but he has not committed himself to any specific legislative program. There are currently more than 40 separate dairy import bills in the House. Sen. William Proxmire, D-Wis., is sponsoring a bill, favored by most producers of 42 other senators. Proxmire’s bill, which has the strong support of the National Milk Producers Federation, would drastically curb im-
ports. It would also end me present method of setting quotas on dairy products under the so-called Section 22 of the existing import program. Under Section 22, import quotas on certain dairy goods are
recommended by me Agriculture Department and passed on by the U.S. Tariff Commission. Foreign producers have been able to greatly increase shipments to the United States by exporting non-quota items.
MilK producers are now tearful that a Section 22 action will be substituted, with the approval of Freeman, for the stiffer Proxmire bill. Opponents of Section 22 and supporters of the Proxmire bill
to curb imports maintain ms government is supporting prices on -- one hand, and then allowing unchanged amounts (4 dairy product imports to lowei the domestic price at the sams time.
