Bainbridge is "People's Choice" In Power-Packed Lafayette Four
INDIANAPOLIS UPI — Lots of power is packed into the Northwest semi-state of the Indiana high school basketball tourney — and that includes little Bainbridge, the leading “people’s choice” in Saturday’s next-to-last session. The Pointers face Logansport in the opener at Purdue, with Gary Roosevelt and Lafayette matching shots in the second game.
Between them, these four lost just 11 games during the season. All except Bainbridge have made it to the four-team finals before, Lafayette sharing the record with 13 such appearances. The Bronchos may be favored — but it’ll be close. Bainbridge, 22-2, from a school of just 209 students, lost only to unbeaten Cloverdale during the regular season, but the Clovers were knocked off by Brazil in the Brazil Sectional.

The Pointers topped the field in the Frankfort regional district and their only real tourney competition came from Greencastle in the sectional and Speedway in the regional. Bainbridge won by 9 and 8 points, respectively. Good shooting built around 6-5 Larry Steele and 6-2 Ron Rossok and a burning desire to succeed against the big-city teams could make it rough for Logansport, which dominated its own regional district. The Berries feature a sticky defense and turned in one of the season’s big surprises by wrecking top-ranked Michigan City’s bid for a perfect season with a double-overtime win on the losers’ floor. Logan, 20-5, won its first 11 games then dropped four in a

row. It’s a well-balanced club built around 6-4 Mike Riggle, with Phil Hershberger, Bill Buskirk, Dan Blom, Fritz Muehlhausen and Mark Jones other key players. Logan, state champ in 1934, has been in the four-team finals four times but not since 1961 when it lost to eventual champion Kokomo. Any team crashing through the East Chicago regional meatgrinder has earned its spurs and Lafayette may have to be at its peak to stave off Roosevelt, the Calumet’s last tourney title hope. The Gary city champs, who tied for the Northwest Conference crown, and Lafayette have identical 23-2 records. They feature a pair of 6-5 centers, Cornelius McFerson and Jim Nelson, and a couple of 5-1 guards, Link Reid and Larry Session. Lafayette, the top pre-toumey choice for the crown, is a typical Marion Crawley club that jelled fast toward the latter part of the season and opened its tourney bid with a 12-game winning streak. The Bronchos have two fine 6-3 centers in Bob Dickson and Butch Haupt and lots of class in the likes of Erick Jackson, John Van Kurlin, Doug Sheets and Steve Reash. Roosevelt was tourney runnerup to Indianapolis Attucks 12 years ago and also made the state finals two years ago, losing to eventual runnerup Fort Wayne North. Lafayette’s North Central Conference champs beat Logan during the season, 84-68, but the others haven’t met. Lafayette won its third state crown three years ago. It was Crawley’s fourth, and another championship ring would place 1 him in a class by himself.
ATTENTION.. BASKETBALL FANS “SEMI-STATE HIUTES” Tonight at 6:30 featuring Coach Pat Rady of Bainbridge interviewed by Bill E. Reports from Logansport’s Jim Jones . . . To tile Bainbridge "Boosters’* Bainbridge at the Semi-State, the third time around. A better scoring record, is not to be found. A great bunch of guys, and a coach like this With fans by the hundreds, how can we miss. So crush those “Berries” make them our wine, So the Bainbridge Pointers can continue to climb. Win or lose, our team plays fair— And when it’s over, They’ll know we’ve been there! Duane and Mary Burk

It May Not Be Enough To Praise The Enemy By Alfred Sheinwold When you’re doubtful of the way you have played a hand, don’t ask your partner if some other play would have been better. He may tell you. When the queen of diamonds failed to drop, South led a low club from dummy and won a finesse with the queen. Declarer next cashed the ace of clubs and gave up a club to the ten. East returned the ten of hearts, which South had to refuse. West overtook with jack and returned a spade. East’s ten of spades drove out the ace, and now the defenders were sure of five tricks. It was a good defense, perhaps even sensational, but North interrupted the compliments to point out that South had misplayed the hand. CLUBS FIRST After taking the ace of hearts, South should take the ace of clubs and then lead the queen of clubs. If the suit breaks normally, South easily makes the four club tricks South must try for the diamonds by taking the king of diamonds and then trying a finesse with dummy’s jack. If East has the club length, he cannot get two club tricks. For example, if East takes

the queen of clubs with the king and returns a heart, South wins with the queen of hearts, cashes the king and ace of diamonds (in case the queen falls) and then returns a club from dummy to finesse through East’s ten. If East refuses to take the queen of clubs, South takes the diamonds and leads a club from dummy anyway to limit East to one club trick. In short, it is correct to play for both the clubs and the diamonds, but South must go after the clubs first. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 points), and the next players passes. Answer: Bid two hearts. X good partner will tend to pass this kind of response; he will rebid only if he has good hearts and 17 or 18 points. In that case you will have to play the hand at three hearts—which should be better than one qotrump. If you have the kind of partner who jumps to three notrump at his second turn, you had better pass him at one notrump and take your licking there.
