Tigers McGurk, Jackson On Second ICC Squad
Center Tom McGurk and forward Jim Jackson, two starters on DePauw’s basketball team, today were announced as winners of spots on the all-In-diana Collegiate Conference second team. The two players’ coach, Elmer McCall, was named runnerup in the balloting for coach-of-the-year honors. The two Tiger front linemen were the only DePauw players among 14 IOC athletes who won post-season honors in balloting conducted by the ICC News Bureau among the league’s seven coaches. Indiana State and Valparaiso landed two players apiece on the first team. The remaining spot went to Evansville’s Herb Williams. Charles Wade and Jerry Newsom of Indiana State are repeaters from last year on the first team, but for Valpo’s Dick Jones and Vem Curtis it was their first all-IOC recognition. Newsom is the only junior on an otherwise senior squad. Joining McGurk. a junior, and Jackson, the only sophomore among the 14 honored, were
second teamers Mack Sawyers, Ball State, Ed Schilling, Butler, and Rich Edgerton, Indiana State. Duane Kleuh of Indiana State was picked as the league’s coach-of-the-year, an encomium won by the former ISU allAmerican in 1959-, 1963 and 1966. Valpo’s Gene Bartow finished behind McCall in the COTY voting. The 6-4 Wade came out of dose three-way voting to capture the top individual prize. Named the ICC’s MVP, the three-time all-ICC first teamer from Columbus, Ind., gathered 56 points in the balloting. That Was just enough to beat his teammate, 6-6 Jerry Newsom (54 joints) and Valpo’s Dick Jones (53 points), a 5-11 guard and the league’s top score. Wade wound up fourth in conference scoring (22.3), ninth in shooting accuracy (.503) and third in free throw shooting (.809). He is the first Indiana State player in 15 years to win the MVP award. The last Sycamore named was Roger Adkins in 1952. The four men gaining honor-
able mention were Terry Stillabower, Ball State; Gene Milner, Butler; Rich Mason, Indiana State; and Ken Rakow, Valparaiso. Twenty-three players were nominated by their coaches for all-conference consideration. The five capturing the most votes on a 10-9-8-7-6- (and so forth) basis were named to the first team and the next highest five to the second team. Honorable mention was awarded those players who failed to make the top 10, but who received mention on ballots of at least two coaches, not including their owh.

Wild Big Ten Net Race Will End This Saturday
By Unitod Pross International Indiana is getting ready to pack its bags, Michigan State is brooding—and Iowa hopes to sneak out the front door in front of both of them. That’s the story of the tangled Big 10 basketball race, which finally ends Saturday after a wild, unpredictable season. Indiana and Michigan State are tied for first place with 9-4 records going into their final games Saturday. Indiana is expected to get the bid because if both teams win their finales Saturday and remain tied, the team that has had the longest wait since its last NCAA appearance is the automatic entrant. Since the Big 10 doesn’t have playoff, Indiana would go to the NCAA since its last trip was in 1958 and Michigan State went in 1959. But the team being ignored in all the speculation is unheralded Iowa, which could sneak off
with the bid Saturday with the right series of breaks. The Hawkeyes kept their slim title hopes alive Tuesday night by turning back Wisconsin 9087, in overtime. The victory eliminated Wisconsin from all 'chance for the title and left Iowa third with an 8-5 record. If both Indiana and Michigan State lose Saturday and Iowa wins, the Hawkeyes would wind up in a three-way tie for first place with the Hoosiers and Spartans at 9-5. That would then send Iowa to the NCAA tourney since the Hawkeyes haven’t gone since 1956. In the final games Saturday, Indiana hosts Purdue, Michigan State hosts Northwestern and Iowa is at Michigan. Overall, Michigan State is 156, Indiana 16-7 and Iowa is 18-8. None of the teams will be considered a strong threat in the NCAA tourney. The Big 10 winner meets the Toledo Virginia Tech winner in Evanston March 17.
Chicago Bulls Stun Celtics
By Unitod Pross International The astounding Chicago Bulls could be winning a spot in the National Basketball Association playoffs — and losing Jimmy Walker in the process. The Bulls, last year’s expansion franchise created from the castoffs of the other teams, stunned the Boston Celtics, 117114, Tuesday night to snap the Celts’ nine-game winning streak and move one-half game ahead of the Detroit Pistons in the battle for fourth place and the final playoff spot in the Western Division. The Bulls, given little chance to win more than 15-20 games by most experts before the season started, are now 29-45 while idle Detroit is 28-45. It was the first win for the new Bulls over the Celts after losing the eight previous meetings between the teams. But in the long run, Detroit may not be too disturbed if it finishes last and has a better pick in the draft because then it would have a better shot at Walker, the Providence AllAmerica star. Walker and Dave Bing would form quite a guard combo for the Pistons. In the other NBA game Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers edged the New York Knicks 131-119 in a game in
which Jerry West broke his nose and Howard Komives reinjured his ankle and is possibly lost for the season. The Celtics’ loss to Chicago dropped the “magic number” for the Philadelphia 76ers clinching of the Eastern title to two. It just happens that the 76ers will be in Boston tonight — and a victory would wrap it up. The Bulls had a 116-104 margin with 1:16 remaining. Boston scored 10 straight points in the next 42 seconds to narrow the deficit to 116-114 with 34 seconds left. The Celts rebounded a missed Bull shot with 18 seconds left and had a shot at tying the game but couldn’t make it and Chicago regained possession. Guy Rodgers sank a foul shot with three seconds left tq wrap it up. Rodgers led the Bulls with 22 points while Jerry Siegfried had 24 for the Celts. In the Knick-Laker game, West had 29 points when he caught a stray elbow late in the third period and suffered a broken nose. He came back late in the fourth period and added four more points to lead the Lakers with 23. Willis Reed and Walt Bellamy scored 25 and 24 points for the Knicks.

Justice Triumphs MADISON, Wis. UPI — Dist. Atty. Robert de Chambeau slugged the judge to prove a point and won his ease. A man charged with driving without his glasses said the spectacles were knocked off his face in a collision. Judge Russell J. Mittelstadt borrowed some glasses and invited De Chambeau to hit him. The attorney struck, the glasses stayed on, and the judge declared, “guilty.-
