Pointers Beat New Market

Bainbridge parlayed a tight defense with New Market’s cold shooting for a 79-42 triumph over the Flyers and a trip into the finals of the Frankfort Regional. It took the Pointers a while to shake the early game Jitters, but then Jim Hanks broke the Ice with a 15-foot jumper at 6:47 in the first quarter. After that, the Pointers were off and running. New Market never did solve the tight Bainbridge zone, and In the first quarter managed only six shots at the bucket. In the first four minutes of the quarter, they took only one shot. The quarter ended with the Pointers on top, 12-3. In the second quarter, the Pointers played as the team With a 20-2 record, and cut loose with their famous fast break that was the terror of Central Indiana teams. When the smoke cleared at the inter-

mission, Bainbridge had the contest well in hand by a 37-16 count. In that second quarter, the Pointers clipped the nets for 11-19, good for .579. After a .166 first quarter, New Market hit 4-15 the second. After missing his first attempt in the second quarter, Ron Rossok started the Pointers on the rampage by connecting on his next four. Larry and Norman Steele also added three fielders each to put the game on ice. The last half was just a matter of playing the 16 minutes for a regulation game, Larry Steele went on the warpath the third quarter as he registered 13 points to send the Pointers up by a 56-29 count. Coach Pat Rady cleared the bench during the fourth quarter and still the Pointers continued to pull away. Larry Steele led all scorers (Continued on Page 6)

Speedway Moves to Finals

Speedway earned the right to challenge Bainbridge in the Final game of the Frankfort Regionals by fighting off a stubborn Delphi crew, 62-50. Jumping off to a quick 17-10 first quarter advantage, SpeedWay had to fight for its life the rest of the way to hold off the Stubborn Delphi Oracles. After jumping into a whopping 38-20 lead with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter, the Plugs seemed to be home free. But the Oracles had other ideas. Delphi’s Mike Emmons and Wayne Biggs sparked a rally that yielded 14 points during the next three minutes. It had the Oracles right back in contention at 39-34 with just under three minutes left in the third' quarter. But then Speedway’s Dave pennett came through with a pair of foul shots and sharpShooting Bill Williams canned a fielder to stem the rally, and

the Plugs went into the final eight minutes with a 43-37 advantage. With Johnny Allen and Dave Bennett working to perfection underneath, the Plugs kept eight to 10 points in front the final eight minutes to win their 15th game in 24 tries. Allen spearheaded the Plugs’ attack with 21 points and got 15 and 12-point assistance from Bennett and Williams, respectively. Mike Emmons wound up as the top scorer for Delphi with 12. Steve Wood also collected 11 and Steve Brehmer added 10. The winners attempted 63 shots from the field and canned 25 for .397. Delphi wasn’t as lucky, making 17 of 53 for .321. Speedway had the edge in rebounding too, picking off 39 compared to 25 for the losers. Both teams played a beautiful floor game. Speedway made 7 errors to the losers 6. (Continued on Page 6)

Tigers Lose to Evansville

Evansville and DePauw wrote a weird ending to the 1966-67 ICC schedule Saturday in Greencastle where the Aces dealt themselves into a third place tie by winning 73-70. The final margin was as close as the Tigers got in the game’s last 26 minutes. It was a struggle all afternoon to catch up with the E-towners. The outcome was weird because DePauw outscored the Aces by one field goal, 28-27, despite the fact the losers had their poorest shooting performance of the now-ended 10-12 season. DePauw hit only .333 on 28 of 84. Evansville, choosing its shots more carefully, made 27 of 59 for .457. Jack Hogan, playing his last game for DePauw, and junior center Tom McGurk paced the Old Gold with 16 points apiece. Jim Jackson added 15 and grabbed off 18 rebounds to clinch DPU Finishes 4th In ICC Meet

his ICC rebounding title. Herb Williams, held to one basket in the first half by Jackson, finished with 19 points— seven at the line—to capture scoring honors. He had 16 point help from Tom Niemeier and reserve Ron Johnson and 15 from Howard Pratt. Down 10 points (71-61) with 1:58 to play, the Tigers made a. final run for the verdict. McGurk socked in three points, but moments later gave two away for goal tending Williams’ layup. That made it 7364 with :55 seconds left. Hogan quickly zipped in a 20footer and McGurk followed with a pair of free throws for a 73-68 count. Gambler Arad McCutchan, Evansville coach, called time out wtih 22 seconds left and decided to give his seniors on the bench a final whirl. Though exceedingly sporting of the many-time national champion mentor, it nearly cost him the game. Sophomore guard Dave Browning snagged Williams with 17 seconds remaining, but Williams missed

the free throw. Then Rick Kingston, one of McCutchan’s bench seniors clobbered Browning. He calmly sank a pair to make it 73-70 with seven seconds left. As the Tigers pressed, the inbound pass got away from Ace Don Jordan. Browning stole it, but by the time he got a shot off,the game was over. The lead changed hands five times in the early going before Herb Williams’ two free throws put Evansville ahead for good, 19-18, with 9:18 left in the half. Williams immediately added another singleton and Johnson put in a three-point play to up the lead to 23-18. Evansville led at halftime, 38-30. DePauw cut it to 42-37 with 12:32 left, but five straight Ace points dimmed DePauw’s hopes. DePauw finished 6-6 in the ICC with double wins over St. Joe, Butler and Ball State and double losses to Evansville, Valparaiso and Indiana State. Evansville turned in a 6-6 ICC mark and an 8-17 season report card.

The University of Evansville swept the I.C.C. swimming meet Saturday at Ball State with the DePauw Tigers finishing fourth. The order of team finish behind the Aces was Indiana State, Ball State, DePauw and Valparaiso. Senior Greg Mutz, last year’s MVS in the ICC, claimed DePauw’s only blue ribbon, Mutz took the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:10.0, a Ball State pool record. The time, however, was just off Mutz’s existing ICC mark of 2:09.8. The Wilmette, HI., splasher also added a second place in the 100-yard freestyle. His :50.7 clocking was under the conference record, but so was winner Larry Dalton’s :50.4. Dalton, of Indiana State, was the day’s only double winner. Rod Manifold captured the Tigers’ only other individual prize. The Huntington, Ind., sophomore finished second in the 200 butterfly in a tome of 2:12.1. Both relay teams placed in the meet. Manifold, Dandy Cope Scott Johnston and Roy Van Cleave took fourth in the 400 medley. Dan O’Meara, Dave Siff, Van Cleave and Mutz teamed up for third in the 400 freestyle. Mutz will represent DePauw in the NCAA college division tournament March 15-16-17 at Long Beach, California.

SWEET 16

On the broad shoulders of Ron Rossok rested the championship of the Frankfort Regional Saturday night, and the 6’2” senior answered the call with 18 points in the final quarter to spearhead the Bainbridge Pointers to a 79-71 victory over determined Speedway. With scoring ace L. Steele nursing three fouls the entire second half, Rossok personally took charge the fourth quarter with his nine field goals to catapult the Pointers from a 53-52 edge into the eight point victory. Rossok wound up the night with 30 points and Larry Steele added 22 more. Norman Steele who electrified the crowd with his driving lay-ins chipped in with 12. After Speedway had displayed such a brilliant style of basketball in the afternoon, especially on defense, and John Allen and Dave Bennett crashing the board, nobody but Pointer fans thought Bainbridge stood a ghost of a chance. But the Pointers thrilled the 5400 spellbound fans with an unbelievable exhibition of outcourt shooting to offset the Plugs’ rebounding majority of nine. (35-26) For the game, the Pointers shot an amazing 53 per cent, 37-70. And they weren’t cheap shots, either. Gary Martin and Ron Rossok banged in deep corner shots. Larry Steele found his favorite spot 40 feet away on the side, and brother Norman made believers of the defense with his bombs at the head of the key. But it took the outstanding shooting and a real team effort to put down - the determined Spark Plugs. After the score was tied 6-all, Rossok put the Pointers into the lead at 4:20 of the first quarter. (A lead that held up until 4:11 of the third quarter.) With the entire starting unit donating baskets, the Pointers stretched their advantage to 19-10 at the end of the first stanza. Most observers felt that the Pointers had to run to be at their best, but for the first three quarters, the winners played a.deliberate type of ball, picking only the good shots. Starting the second quarter, Martin hit another deep corner shot to give the Pointers an eleven point spread. The Pointers kept a ten point margin until 2:21 to go in the second period. The rest of the quarter, the Pointers didn’t score and Speedway went to work. Rick Aranjo hit his only bucket of the evening, and John Allen sank his 4th and 5th buckets of the quarter to narrow the lead to 93-36 at halftime. Starting the final 16 minutes of play, Norman Steele canned a 25 footer, followed by two of brother Larry’s 40 footers, but then the Pointers went from 5:27 until 3:52 without a score. During this span, sparked by Allan and Dave Bennett, Speedway knotted the count at 42 all, and set the stage for the climactic finish. To the end of the third stanza, the score was tied three times, and a Martin bucket with 20 seconds remaining, gave the Pointers the one point advantage, 53-52. In the final eight minutes, the Pointers found their legs and started to run against the Plugs. This, plus Larry Steele’s amazing passes to the twisting, turning Ron Rossok under the basket turned the tide in the Pointers favor. Rossok opened the final eight minutes with a bucket, Larry Steele matched an Allen twopointer and Rossok hit from deep in the comer to send the Pointers into a 59-54 lead with 6:59 to play. But the Plugs weren’t dead yet. After Ehlebracht hit, Rossok hit a twisting, underhanded shovel shot, but Allen came right back to narrow the gap to 61-59 with 5:59 remaining. Larry Steele gave the Point-

ers breathing room with another of his bombs, but then Bennett, playing with four fouls, snaked his way under for two. (65-63). Larry Steele found Rossok aagin under for a four point edge, and Larry came right back with a rebound to put the Pointers up by six with 2:49 left. But Bennett on a reverse lay-in narrowed the gap to two at 2:28. Then Larry Steele stole a pass and went all the way to score at 1:59. (71-65). Beimett again dumped one in to cut the lead to four at 1:42, but then Rossok made the last four Pointer baskets to clinch their second straight Regional championship. ▲lien took game scoring honors with 41 points, followed by Bennett with 26.
