Happy Floral Business Started By Ex-Patient
By ROBERTA ROESCH ‘T never worked kill I was past 40, says Virginia M. Johnson of Washingtonville, N. Y., who now dries and presses flowers. “But these days it’s my joyful mission to share my love of flowers with others and show them God's love through the beauty of nature. "To do this.” Virginia said, “I make pressed flower pictures, paperweights with dried flowers processed in sand, pomander balls and fantasy trees. Conducts Classes “I create many pressed flower pictures to order and sell other through gift and flower shops. I also conduct classes and workshops for women’s groups. “The fact that I can do this is a daily wonder to me,” she said, “because, from the time I was 18 until I was 40, my life was filled with illness and operations. I spent over 16 years in bed, but I always believed that through God's love I would some day be healed again. “At 40 my faith was justified. My health was restored and the sun began to shine. “As I was able to pick up my life, I voted for the first time, drove a car and bought my first outfit in 17 years. Business Decision “When my strength returned,” she told me, “I was filled with such joy at the thought of being able to work that 1 decided to make it my business to share my love of flowers with others. God had been very good to me and His love is shown in flowers. “I had no training for this work, but, after I attended two Workshops, I was able to create ~my first flower pictures and . start selling them to friends. “Later I began placing my work in gift shops, art centers, hospital shops and flower shops.” To carry on her now active -businees, Virginia spends most gf her mornings working with ~fcer dried flowers, pecking materials for workshops and classes and preparing frames for floral annngements. ~ After lunch, she takes a walk 3|iid combines this daily exercise -With picking flowers and grassas that die can eventually dry and press. She then returns to
She Picks Flowers, Presses And Dries Them For Pictures her den where she works until dinner time. Evenings she often conducts workshops or sits with her engineer husband while she fills little pomander balls with arrangements she makes for them. "Because of my own experience,” she said, “I live with the strong conviction that one must always look ahead with positive thinking and faith. The joy of expecting great adventures should keep us stretching upward. Work And Pray “You ask about my philosophy on how to get ahead. I’ve never thought about that much. But if I have any advice for women who want opportunities I would tell them to love the work that they’re doing and pray that God will direct and guide them. “When they do,’’ she said, “I don’t think they can lose.”

Social Security Study Underwuy WASHINGTON UPI — Congressional hearings have begun on President Johnson’s proposal to boost Social Security benefits an average 20 per cent, an increase knowledgeable members were saying would be scaled down. That was the outlook as Secretary John W. Gardner of the Health, Education and Welfare Department came before the House Ways A Means committee to explain that Johnson considers the increases an important part of his “war on poverty” program. Informed members of the 25man committee expect Congress to apprqve a Social Security increase year, but perhaps taking eight months to do it. They doubt the new benefits will be as high as Johnson is asking, and they expect that proposed Increases in payroll taxes employes and employers pay will likewise be reduced. Johnson’s plan calls for a minimum increase ef 15 per cent in all categories of benefits, averaging out tg an overall 20 per cent rise. The proposed price tag would be paid for with a rise in steps from the present 4.4 per cent payroll tax an employer and employe each pay to 5 per cent by 1974. In addition, the maximum income taxes in a year would go from the present $6,600 to $10,800 in steps over the same period. Besides higher benefits and taxes, the administration package contains proposed liberalizations of the Medicare program, a tightened-up welfare program and broadened health benefits. It also suggests a new Income tax structure for persons over 65. The total pricetag for 1968 would be $4.5 biUion based on a July 1 start. Some 23 million Americans would be the beneficiaries.
