Reelsville Indians Bow To Staunton At Brazil
Reelsvllle’s Indians bit the dust last night as Staunton hit them low with a 53-45 victory punch that give the Clay County team a berth in today’s semifinal round of the Brazil SecttonaL Staunton will tangle with Spencer in the second contest pf the afternoon while Brazil Will match buckets with last year’s sectional champions Clovj»rdale. •4 ^ Reelsville met Staunton’s fast moving 2-1-2 defense with some fancy passing in the first period of the contest, but found the easy shots few and far between as they totaled only eight points. Staunton found the Indians’ 1-2-2 zone to be like-wise and both teams had to settle with a low eight. Staunton’s Swearingen picked up his team’s momentum in the second and third stanza and started moving into the pivot with more ease. The big 6-4 boy picked up a hearty twelve points and led his team to a 35-23 lead over the Putnam County team at the end of the third period. ' The fourth period caught Staunton pouring on the coal i» the early minutes and jumping to a healthy sixteen point margin at the 6:00 mark. Reelsville mentor Charles McClure then called his boys to the sidelines.
Things started happening when McClure sent his crew back onto the floor as the smaller South Putnam team started a rally that brought them to within four points at the RSB mark. Staunton then took a hint and decided to hold the ball and work for the best shots. The strategy paid off and Staunton claimed their victory 53-45 at the gun. Peeler led the assault for Reelsville with 19 points while teammate W a 1 la c e donated eight field goals for 16 points. Two men doubled up for Staunton as Swearingen dumped in 22 points. He was followed by 20 points by McGlone. Reelsville (45) FG FT PF Peeler S 3 3 Victor 0 0 2 Callahan 0 2 1 Wallace 8 0 4 F. Hansel 10 2 D. There’ll be “a hot time in the bid town" come next Tuesday evening when members of the Greencastle Police Department and Firs Department clash in Basketball. '. $0 Intense Is the rivalry between Che two departments, the polio* have contracted with Putnam County Sheriff Bob Albright to be one of the referees. action of some sort during the encounter. There will be no admission charge and the public is invited to witness a hardwood court battle that Should be out of this world. Dick Jones Wins ICC Basketball Scoring Title
The Indiana Collegiate Conference scoring title has been won by Valparaiso University’s 5-11 senior guard Dick Jones from LaPorte. Jones claimed the scoring championship in his team’s final game from Ken Broussard ©f St. Joseph’s. Jones finished the 12-game schedule with 303 points for a 25.3 average. Broussard was just five points {jack at 298 for a 24.8 average. * Jerry Newsom and Butch Wade of Indiana State’s NCAA IJound Sycamores apparently have latched on to third and fourth in the scoring race. Only the DePauw - Evansville game remains on the ICC chart and neither team has a man close to the top four. Newsom scored 274 points and Wade 268 for 22.3 averages. 2 Jones, who earlier set a consecutive free throw mark of 36 without miss, won the ICC free shooting championship with .963 on 78 of 81. A distant second and third were Indiana State’s Rich Edgerton .863 (33-38) and Jones’ teammate Vem Curtis .848 ( 56-66). • Yet another Valparaiso player, late-blooming Tom Wagner, seems to have the field goal Shooting trophy wrapped up. Wagner paces the field with a .621 mark (36-58) with Butler’s Doug Wininger second at .577 (60-104). It would take a sparkling performance from Evansville’s third place Herb Williams (553. on 83-150) to overhaul Wagner. DePauw sophomore Jim Jackson has another game to fatten lip his insurmountable lead in rebounding. Jackson has 160 rebounds for a 14.5 average. Only men left with a chance to catch
him are two of his teammates and Evansville’s Williams and Tom Niemeier. The closest man would need 43 in the finale to tie and that’s rather unlikely. While the individual laurels seem to be resting comfortably on the heads of the present leaders, the league still has to determine who is going to grab off second, third and fourth spots. Evansville can get a tie for third at 6-6 by beating DePauw. while the Tigers aspire to a tie for second at 7-5 with Valpo by whipping the Aces in Greencastle March 4 in an afternoon contest. The three current pace setters lead all the ICC team departments, with Valparaiso turning in a new IOC free throw shooting mark. The Crusaders assured themselves the new record by hitting 20 of 25 in defeating DePauw Wednesday, 76-67. The new standard of .793 set by Valparaiso wipes out the “old” .780 one set last year by Indiana State. Valpo hit 238 of 300 to claim the record, placing three of its first five in the league’s top 10 free throw shooters. Indiana State picked off the team offensive (91.8) and rebound (49.0) honors in a year in which the overall league offensive average slipped markedly. Valparaiso has the inside track on team defense with a 76.5 allowance, and It shot at a .505 field goal clip to claim this coveted title. DePauw is the league’s least, foul inclined club, committing j an average of 16.8 infractions | per game. Valpo is second and Indiana State third. i
SPUTTERINGS
By Walter L Johns, Central Press Sports Editor
BUSTER MATHIS is a big boy now. But he’s not a blimp, as he was. And, if he can keep his weight down he may be the heavyweight boxing champion of the world someday. He’s got the tools, and the desire, and one of the top manager-trainers in the business of boxing, Cus D’Amato, who led Floyd Patterson to the world’s heavyweight championship and Jose Torres to the light heavyweight title. At the moment, Buster has had 17 pro fights, the last one as a preliminary to the Clay-Terrell affair in Houston. Buster’s won them all, 13 by kayoes. His opponents were of the bum variety and Buster, as big as he is, just overpowered and out-slugged them. His last kayo came against Waban (Tugboat) Thomas, a hairy-chested 36-year-old out of North Carolina. It didn’t do much for Buster’s record but it was accomplished for the biggest crowd he’s ever appeared before, 37,000-plus, in the Houston Astrodome. • • * BUSTER is a strange physical phenomenon. He was an incubator baby. He started to put on weight and almost
Buster Mathis . .. Not as big a boy never stopped. He went up to 360 pounds and when he fought in the last Olympics he weighed 310. Dieting and plenty of roadwork (he runs miles every day) has brought him down to 237 pounds. At 6'3" tall, that’s not too bad but he has a tendency to balloon up again if he doesn’t watch himself. Buster recently went to his Grand Rapids, Mich., home over the holidays and zoomed up 25 pounds. He took that off for his fight with Thomas. He’s fast in the ring. Slugging all the time. Punching all the time. He’s a bit awkward, as is natural, but is gradually looking better. Former champ Rocky Marciano thinks Buster has a good chance to become the heavyweight champ. And so does Cus, who also thinks basketballer Wilt Chamberlain might be the guy to deflate Muhammad Ali. • • • BUSTER comes from a big family. He has six brothers and two sisters. His parents are dead and he lives with an aunt. He played some semi-pro football, as a defensive tackle, with the Grand Rapids Blazers. But he was a promising amateur boxer and turned to the ring. He had 52 amateur bouts, lost only three, won the A.A.U. crown. His first pro bout brought him a pay check of $115. We talked to Buster in Houston recently. In street clothes you’d never guess him to weigh that much. He talks like a man with a purpose. “My aim,” he answered, “is to be heavyweight champ of the world. I’m fighting them as they come. I’d like to meet Clay because he’s fast and moves and I’m fast and I can move.”
DePauw To Host Lake Forest Tonight

Sophomore forward Mike Hogan had sixteen points and center Doug Dunbax tossed in 15 more. DePauw, needing victories in its final three games to reach an 11-11 season, will go with Jim Jackson and Tom McCormick at forward, Tom McGurk at center and guards Denny! Barrett and Jack Hogan. The Tigers will wrap up the! campaign next week, going to Wabash Wednesday and entertaining Evansville here Saturday at 3 p.m. in the ICC finale for both.
