Doctor, Td Like To Know—
FEVER blisters come out on my lips almost everytime I have a cold. This becomes embarrassing to a 14-year-old girl because I am teased about it. Maybe, if you wrote a column on it, I could show my friends that their kidding remarks may be fun but are unscientific. Is there any way to prevent them? If not, how can they be made to go away quickly? Miss J.U.N., Wisconsin Dear Miss N.: Teenage teasing Dr. Coleman is no different now than it was when I was a youngster. I remember all the sly looks and the “whom are you kissing now” attitude of well meaning friends. I am certain that it is all in fun and should not be a source of distress to you. It obviously is ■not, because of your tongue-in-cheek attitude. Cold sores, or fever blisters, are called herpes simplex, and are known to be caused by a Virus infection. Small blisters appear on the skin or the mucous membrane of the lips and
mouth.
It is interesting that it is rarely passed from one person to another by direct contact. More often an upper respiratory Infection, injury, overexposure to sunlight and emotional distress may start off an attack of
cold sores.
Sometimes they come on out ©f the clear blue sky without any reasonable cause. They are just a plain nuisance, and, as in your case, are understandably embarrassing to a teenager. I know of no way to prevent them except perhaps to keep up your body resistance, especially during the early stages of a cold. Plenty of sleep and normal
diet are essential.
Many treatments have been tried. Some seem to work, ethers are almost worthless. Almost everybody has bis own fa-
vorite remedy.
If cold cores are moistened or kept wet with the tongue,
healing to be delayed, newspaper.

Doctors sometimes prescribe drying lotions, or creams, and, when necessary, use antibiotic ointments if there is a complicating infection. Just be patient, you will soon outgrow the teenage, the embarrassment and perhaps the cold sores. e e e The side of my face sometimes suddenly becomes swollen, especially when I eat anything tart. This has happened four times. It lasts for a day and then disappears. What can cause
this?
T.E., Oklahoma Dear Mr. E.: The story you describe is rather typical of some obstruction of the tiny tube which carries saliva from the parotid gland into the mouth. Hits gland lies in front of the ear and is the one that becomes swollen with mumps. There are other salivary glands beneath the jaw and beneath the chin. The saliva pours into the mouth and is used in the first step of the digestion
of food.
Occasionally a tiny stone, made out of calcium or uric acid, forms in the gland or in the tube. This may act as a ball valve. When you eat something tart the gland produces more saliva and may push the stone into the narrow tube and obstruct it. The saliva dams back and the result is swelling of the
face.
Other conditions are less likely causes for this. There are now excellent techniques by which the salivary glands can be studied by special dyes and X-rays. Often the stone is found and, when necessary, can ba removed by simple surgery.

By David Nydick UPI Education Specialist Parents often have some very specific problems which need immediate answers. Such problems are sometimes most difficult to handle when they occur. It should be helpful to con- : sider some of the more usual problems which parents face. The following questions have i been sent by readers. Although the questions have been answered by letter, they have been raised often enough to merit response here. Question: For the past few days my son, James, has not wanted to attend school. He is a second grader who has always loved to go to school in the past. He has used many excuses such as a stomachache or headache. I am sure these are not true and something that has happened at school is the real problem. He has refused to discuss the matter with me and insists he is sick. Should I force him to go or should I let him stay home? Answer: The problem could have a very simple answer or it could be the indication of a more serious situation. You should take several steps. First, do not overlook the obvious. Although you may be correct that he is not sick, why not let your physician make this decision. It wouldn’t hurt to
discuss the entire matter with him. Call the teacher and explain the situation to her. She may be able to shed some light on the
mystery. It might be a simple matter of fear (test or undone assignment or embarrassment) of some incident in class. Perhaps he has been threaten-

2 Truck Drivers Traffic Victims Two truck drivers from the same small town in Michigan were involved in fatal accidents 90 minutes and 125 miles apart early today, raising Indiana’s 1967 traffic fatality toll past the 150 mark. By an odd coincidence, the drivers of both trucks involved in car-truck collisions near Shelbyville and in Huntingburg were from Jenison, Mich., a town of 3,600 population. The 1967 toll climbed to at least 151 compared with 194 a year ago. George Dzara. 46, Indianapolis, was killed when his car collided on Indiana 9 near Fountaintown in Shelby County with a truck driven by Garritt Maassen. Robert Jochem, 23, Ferdinand, was killed when his car edged across the center line of U.S. 231 in Huntington and crashed head-on into a truck driven by Nelson Riemersna. Both truck drivers escaped injury.

BELGRADE UPI—The Yugoslav government announced steps Wednesday to curb the ! private ownership of firearms. Alarmed at a growing crime wave in the country, the government said it would present a set of draft regulations to the federal assembly restricting the issuance of firearms licenses and defining cases in which firearms may be taken away from
their owners.
Greater Accuracy MOSCOW UPI —The Soviet newspaper Moskovsky Komso molets (Moscow Young Communist) boasted Wednesday that Russia’s nuclear submarines can fire rockets with greater accuracy than U. S. subs. It quot ed an unidentified Soviet submarine commander in an article that noted U. S. submarines have fired rockets to a near bullseye from distances of 1,500 miles.
ed by some other boys. Ordinarily if James is not sick, he should not stay at home. If you cannot uncover the cause of the problem it would be best to seek the assistance of the principal and the school psychologist. See that he attends school even if you must take him .The teacher or nurse can help by meeting you and taking James into the class. Do not let the problem go unsolved. If you or your husband cannot find the answer, the school psychologist should be able to help. Question: My daughter, 13, wants to attend a formal dance with a high school senior. I do not want her to go but she is very upset and insists that her friends are going with other boys and I am unfair. Should I give in or should I continue to refuse? Answer: Your original refusal was a wise decision. It is unfortunate that her friends are going but I wouldn’t be surprised if their parents feel the same way and might folow your fine example. Explain to your daughter that she is too young to be going out with 17 or 18 year old boys. Although she won’t like your answer it is important that she spend her time with boys and girls of her own age range. Stand by your guns and good
luck.
