By Vernon Scott HOLLYWOOD UPI — You’re a young actor and you’re knocked around in television and movies for a half dozen years, never making it to the
big time.
You play a few small roles in big pictures and a few important parte in chintzy
pictures.
There are long gaps between assignments, but your agent is in there trying for you. You pick up guest appearances in television, and a couple of years ago you had a big shot at the top in the Richard Boone Repertory Theater on television. But the show bombed. You’re married and you have a couple of kids, too. So you keep plugging. Then, almost wondrously, Richard Brooks, an esteemed writer-director, signs you for one of the two leads for a new picture “In Cold Blood.” Tension Builds ‘You get butterflies in your stomach, and they stay there,” says Robert Blake, a darkly handsome young man who says little unless he has something that is worthwhile saying. He was chosen for the role of murderer. Perry Smith, last November. The picture doesn’t roll until March. The tension has been building. He has never had a n opportunity such as this before. “I’m used to getting a script the night before, learning the part and reporting for work.” he said. “By the time I get into my role it’s over. The next day you turn in your wardrobe and throw out the script “And you’d better not run a day overtime or they’ll never hire you again. Afterwards you just wait until another part comes along.” Blake refers to his mentor only as “Mr. Brooks” who took him to Kansas last December to
familiarize him with the brutal murders detailed in Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood.” Close Resemblance They even visited the Kansas State Penitentiary’s death row where Smith spent his last days. A guard swiveled his head around in disbelief saying, “I thought you were Perry coming back to haunt us.” Blake bears a striking resemblance to the executed killer. Having studied Capote’s book, he also feels compassion for Smith. “I’ve been through the book inside and out. I can only play him as a man, not a murderer,” he said. “It’s the j only frame of reference I have. I’ve never murdered. I’ve never lived on death row. So I have to rely on the things I know. "I don’t want to meet his
