Tigers Squeak by Butler, Travel to Tulane Tonight

A pair of clutch free throws by sophomore Tom McCormick lifted DePauw to a pulsating 62-61 decision over Butler Saturday night in bedlam bedecked Hinkle Fieldhouse. The comeback victory that DePauw led for a total of 136 seconds hoisted the winners to sole possession of second in the ICC with a 6-4 mark. It also earned DePauw its first double win over Butler since the 195152 squad turned the trick. After tonight’s Dixieland tussle at Tulane, 74-71 winner over Georgia Tech Saturday, the team returns to Bowman gymnasium Wednesday at 8 p.m. to try to wrap up unchallenged possession of second when Valparaiso (6-5) comes to town. Free throws, of all things, put DePauw over the top against Butler. Plodding along before the game as the ICC’s least talented at the line, DePauw got only one basket in the final 10:04 but converted nine of 12 foul shots for the narrow margin. The big two, of course, were Tom McCormick’s pair with 13 seconds left. They boosted DePauw ahead, 62-61. Butler still had time to retaliate. The Bulldogs’ Ron Salatich got a shot off with eight seconds left, but Jim Jackson whacked it out of bounds. Tony Hinkle called time out with four seconds left to talk shop. When the battle resumed the ball came flying in to Doug Wininger, the ICC’s leading marksman (.619). Wininger already had hit five of eight, but j

his final blast looped around the rim and spun out as the horn blew. DePauw scrambled all evening long to make a game of it. Trailing as much as 13 with 15:29 to play, they finally caught up at 54-54 on Tom McGurk’s free throw at 6:30. The Tigers’ persistent defense, coupled with Butler’s failure to score for 5:56, helped get the job done. McGurk, the 6-7 Covington junior, pushed DePauw intq their first lead of the second half when he hit the second of a two-shot infraction. McCormick, finishing with eight of 11 from the field, shoved DePauw ahead 57-54 next time down the floor. This momentary surge — DePauw biggest lead of the game — didn’t discourage the hosts. Gene, Mauck, who once was headed for DePauw, cut the edge to on with a 16-footer from the right side. DePauw called time with 3:18 left to calm things down. Instead, the lid nearly blew off. DePauw committed three straight miscues, the first one—after Salatich had tied the game 57-57— allowed Ed Schilling to put Butler back on top, 59-57, with a driving layup. Jackson — like McCormick, not one of the team’s most consistent foul shooters—^finally got the decline halted. Pushed by Schilling as the big Butler center tipped in a basket for the Bulldogs, Jackson tied the score 59-59 with a pair of free throws. Schilling’s basket, to the chagrin of the

Pointers Down Darlington, 75-72 For 17-2 Record

The Bainbridge Pointers closed their season with a thrilling 75-72 come - from - behind victory over stubborn Darlington. Trailing by as much as six points late in the second half, the Pointers rallied on the nine field goals in 11 tries by Larry Steele to overtake the Darlington crew and hang on for the three point win and their 17th in 19 games. Darlington jumped into a quick 16-10 first quarter advantage, but starting the second quarter, Coach Pat Rady ordered a half court press. On 33 per cent shooting the second quarter, the Pointers outscored their host, 19 to 11 for a 29-27 half time edge. In that second period, the press forced Darlington into three field goals in 13 attempts. In their second half rally, the Pointers used 10-17 shooting the last quarter to Darlington’s 8-13, for the final margin of victory. Old Gold 3rd in ICC Wrestling DePauw’s varsity wrestlers won third place in the Indiana Collegiate Conference tournament Saturday in Terre Haute. The host Sycamores, however, walked away with the two-day tourney, winning eight of the nine weight divisions. The scores by team were Indiana State 115, Ball State 50, DePauw 44, Valparaiso 37, and St. Joseph’s 15. Both heavyweight Dan Hasbrook and 130-pounder John Ferguson reached the finals in : their specialties. Ferguson lost a 12-3 decision to Indiana State’s Chuck Cone, while Hasbrook was pinned by his foe, Mike Kelly, also of State, in the second period. DePauw picked up points in the consolation round where third places were won by Paul Mitchell (137), Mike Maeder (145), Tom Newman (152) and Doug Waples (167). Tom Croxton (123), Mike Burton (160) and Neil Budelsky (177) took fourth spots. The Tigers will host Wabash College’s freshmen and varsity here Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. DePauw’s varsity swimmers will be at home tomorrow too to face Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m. in the Bowman pool. The squad split in a pair of meets this past weekend up north. They disposed of ICC sister Valparaiso but lost to Albion.

For the game, Darlington shot 46 per cent (27-58), while the Pointers were a bit on the cool side with 37 per cent (30-79). Bainbridge outrebounded their host, 35-24. Larry Steele, with his 9 of 11 shooting the second half, finished the game with a game high of 35 points. Ron Rossok working the middle against Darlington’s 1-2-2 zone helped with 18 points. Threlkeld, shooting from out, led Darlington with 22 points, followed by Palmer with 18. The Pointers, co-favorites to win the Greencastle Sectional, play next Thursday night at 8:30. Butler bench, was disallowed. But hot-handed Gene Milner, who finished with nine of 12 from the field, wheeled right back down the floor and fired in a fielder from the deep front court with 58 seconds left to put Butler in front, 61-59. Schilling was the culprit again 16 seconds later. McCormick shot from out front, but he missed. He charged after his rebound down the foul lane, got the ball and shot again. It missed, but Schilling was tooted out with his fifth personal. McCormick’s first shot went in but the second missed, leaving DePauw behind, 61-60. As Milner brought the ball across the time line he was fouled by Barrett. Milner’s shot bounced harmlessly off and DePauw rebounded, setting up McCormick’s crucial free throws. DePauw dug itself into hot water right off the bat. It fell behind 9-0 before McGurk got a singleton at 17:06. Once they got Milner shut off—he scored 10 of Butler’s first 14 points —the Tigers got busy. A streak of eight straight points moved them to 15-16. McCormick from eight feet out finally gave DePauw the front, 17-16 with 11:23 left. Butler bounded back with a 10-point streak of its own that ran the count to 30-21. It was 40-32, Butler, at halftime. The way Butler started the second stanza, no one would have guessed Milner would be the only Bulldog to get more than one basket in the final minutes. DePauw defensed the losers into only nine baskets and three free throws—21 points in 20 minutes. The Tigers, meanwhile, worked out of a 49-36 deficit at 15:29 by outscoring Butler 15-3 over a six-minute stretch. Neither team shot particularly well. DePauw hit .389 (2359). Butler had .380 on 2771. DePauw hit 16 of 22 at the line. Butler went seven of 15. McCormick and Milner were the game’s leading scorers. Each got 21. Jackson had 11 points and 10 rebounds. McGurk scored 14 points and also picked up 10 rebounds.

Tiger Frosh Lose Reelsville Closes Season

In Double OX

DePauw’s yearling basketball team nearly turned in the upset of the freshman season Saturday, losing 93-88 in double overtime to once-beaten Butler. They’ll play Valparaiso’s freshmen here Wednesday at 6 p.m. Early arriving Hinkle Fieldhouse fans hardly had enough nervous energy left for the varsity tilt after fidgeting through the two-overtime fracas. Butler, winner of five of six frosh games, put the affair into overtime first by tying the score 76-76 with a basket in the final eight seconds. It was DePauw’s turn to do the honors for the next overtime. With one second left on the clock and the ball out of bounds in its possession, DePauw whipped the sphere in to Dick Tharp. The moment it hit the hands of the Kansas City Kid he let fly from the right baseline, 15 feet out. The horn blew as the ball climbed upward toward the rim. It swished to force the game into the second overtime 84-84. Butler came from behind 87-84 to go ahead for good 90-88 with 1:17 to play. They iced the game with a free throw and another basket with five seconds left. DePauw trailed 30-14 with 6:40 left in the first half, losing its leading scorer Mickey Schramm with an injured ankle. His departure apparently miffed the Tigers. They proceeded to outscore Butler 23-6 to take a 37-36 halftime margin. Tharp led DePauw with 28 points. Dale Barrett had 19, Jim Yoder 13, Larry Downs eight and Steve Koontz two. Schramm’s replacement, unheralded Bob Emerick, scored 18 points, all after the half. He teamed with Barrett for a fine floor game.

With Loss to Eminence

The Eminence Eels jumped into a 23-6 first quarter advantage and then coasted to a convincing 78-60 win over the Reelsville Indians. In the torrid first quarter the Eels made 10 of 13 field goal attempts topped by Mike Buis with ten points. On the other hand, Reelsville found a lid on the bucket and could manage only three field goals in 18 tries for a cool .170 per cent The Indians used a full court press the rest of the game and by forcing the Eels into numerous floor errors, played even ball with the visitors despite their 56 per cent shooting for the game (30-56). Reelsville couldn’t do quite so well, converting 24 goals in 64 attempts for 39 per cent Freshman Ron Wallace led the Indian attack with 21 points, most coming from out shooting over the Eels’ 2-1-2 zone. Ray Peeler chipped in with 16 points, all but five the last half. Mike Buis was high for the game with 27 markers, spread evenly over the contest Cooper tallied 22 in a fine game.
