Too Many Women Fail To Shoot At Top Jobs

By ROBERTA ROESCH Is it true that too many - women are satisfied to view their jobs in an accidental man~ner and settle for secondary work ? Experts who study female employment say the answer is ‘“Yes” and scores of government statistics tend to bear this out. Just as one example, the Department of Labor reports that during these challenging ’Sixties, women flock, more than ever, to clerical and service fields. v,Eour Categories - In fact, at the start of this -"decade, there were only four top fields in which 100,000 or ^jmore women worked, and these were elementary school teacher, --secondary school teacher, pro- ■*' ffessional nurse and musician or music teacher. But despite these statements a,nd the stories statistics tell, '••letters from our readers point "out that many women refuse to ^ be satisfied just to collect a pay check. Here are comments from - three women, bearing out this posi tion. “ “I am an ambitious woman.” writes a reader from New Jer--~aey. “At the moment, Fm doing ‘ clerical work on a part-time - basis since this set-up permits me to be at home when my children get out of school. My employers are interesting and compatible, but my salary is low and I don’t see any future in the kind of part-time work I do. * “A real job future, Fm convinced, will lie in full-time work, bo Fm anxious to start perpartng for that. I aspire to work that’s responsible and demanding, so I need some advice on te turning to school in order to prepare for that.” Another Care ' “For eight yean, I have been hi full charge of the payroll for ft large firm,” writes ft second reader. “But even though Fm paid fairly well and rated very highly by my boas, I aea no fthanee for advancement here. *4 tw ttd opportunity in stagB&ting, however, so Fd like to to ■ new job that will DU develop my full porik t expect to stay in the <|f work in which Fm ex- ■ puimeed, but I want to inImbm my skills hi it so I can ; progress up the ladder as far 6s I can go. “Any help you can give me ; on making a smart job switch

• Most Women Settle For Usual ; Jobs. Rare Ones Aim For Top . will be just the right prescrip- • tion for me.’*

A third reader says, *1 have worked as a typist for two years, and my job is a relatively unimportant one, even though I do some fairly technical work with typesetting and computer tapes. “I realize that I could go on like this for years and still bring home a paycheck each week. But since I see good jobs around me for women who are willing to work, I want to train for one of them. “My present plans are to go to school for secretarial skills and get that kind of job. Asks For Guidance “Then I’ll use that as a step-ping-stone to a junior executive's spot since I have many years to work. Any guidance you can give me will be helpful, Fm sure.” These letters answer the question we posed at the start. And they are encouraging in the face of all the talk we hear about women being willing to be less than they can be. If you have some thoughts on the subject we would like to hear your views. We will publish all those that we can.

Powell Probers In Final Week WASHINGTON UPI — A special House committee investigating Adam Clayton Powell began its final week of deliberations today with apparent agreement on two major decisions affecting the Harlem lawmaker’s future. Prior to a closed meeting of the nine-member panel today, it was becoming increasingly clear that it had decided.—that whatever action is to be taken against Powell should come after he is seated in the House. That the legal problems facing him in New York have no bearing—at least for the present—on the question of whether he should be a member of the 90th Congress. There was irony of sorts in the latter decision since it was Powell’s brush with the New York courts that first inspired the move to deny him the House seat he has held for the past

22 years.

The special committee’s meeting today was expected to run into the early evening. Sources said that by the time it ended the members of the panel may have agreed generally on what they will recommend to the House Thursday. The Five Democrats and four Republicans who make up the committee were named after the House, on Jan. 10, prevented Rowell from taking his oath of office pending an investigation into his “fitness” to serve.

Accidents Increase CHICAGO UPI — The number of accidents in public places increased 3 per cent in 1966 over 1965, the National Safety Council said Sunday. The council said the accidents resulted in 19,500 persons killed and 2,450,000 others injured. Brownings and falls each ac counted for about 25 per cent of the total, leading the list. The public category excludes motor vehicle, on the job and home accidents. The council said 20 per cent of all accidental deaths come under the heading.
