New Ticket Arrangement Announced For Sectional

Principal Norman McCammon of Greencastle High School, host school for the Greencastle Sectional, announced today that the Greencastle Sectional will adopt

Cublets Win 2 From Cloverdale

The Greencastle 7th and 9th grade basketball teams closed their seasons on a snappy note as both scored wins over their counterparts from Cloverdale. The 7th grade received 12 points from Mike Orlosky and eleven by Steve Scott to subdue the young Clovers, 50-40. Starting early, the young Cubs jumped into a 12-6 margin and by half had doubled the score at 24-12. After leading only by three at the first stop, the 9th graders outscored their rivals 19 to eight the second stanza for a commanding 39-25 half lead and then coasted to a 71-41 win. Tony Harmless paced the young cubs attack with 22 markers. Charles Ballou chipped in with five field goals. B. Steele led the Clovers attack with 16 points. Greencastle 7th (50) FG FT PF

the one-site, two-bracket plan of ticket distribution. Instead of the games being scheduled on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 23, 24, and 25, play will start on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, February 22, 23, and 25, with Friday, February 24 as an open date. As Mr. McCammon remarker, “this will give the fans of each school a better chance to see their team in action.” In effect it works like this: Each school will receive 100 tickets to every session for players, coaching staff, and other distribution as the school desires. All other tickets will be pro-rated according to the IHSAA plan based on enrollment to the four schools playing that night. Fans may purchase a ticket for the date their school is participating from their High School Principal’s office on Friday, February 17. Price is 81.00 a session. For instance: Roachdale, Greencastle, Russellville, and Cascade will be playing Wednesday, will share all tickets for that night, and Fillmore, North Salem, Rockville and Bainbridge will receive all tickets for Thursday night for their fans. The final four teams will share the Saturday season tickets. Principal McCammon commented that Greencastle High School Tourney tickets will be distributed according to the long standing plan of giving players, parents, and staff first priority. If the requests exceed the supply a drawing will be held. All tickets remaining at this stage are sold on first come basis. “Probably all competing schools will follow a similar pattern.

The Better Half

(In appreciation of the contribution made by the wives of the coaches to the outstanding basketball played in Putnam County in that they give their husbands to the public five months of the year, The Banner is happy to introduce the wives of the County basketball coaches.) NAME: Sharen Sue Miller, wife of James Miller, Cloverdale High. ADDRESS: R. R. 1, Cloverdale. FAMILY: Tollie, age 4. OCCUPATION: Housewife and mother. HOME TOWN: Vallonia. FAVORITE SPORTS: Basketball and swimming, but I love all sports. PET PEEVE: People that are deceitful, and also downtown coaches that try to second-guess my husband. I always feel that he knows the situation and knows what should be done, and he does what he believes is right. MOST EXCITING GAME EVER WITNESSED: When Jim was coaching at New IH Winchester, we played Plainfield in the sectional and they beat us two points. I was so nervous I didn’t know what had happened because I almost passed out, and I had to walk around outside. Three years ago in the county tourney while playing Belle Union, the game went into an overtime and I was so excited I fell down the bleachers. (Cloverdale won.) DISADVANTAGES OF BEING A COACH'S WIFE: The hours that my husband is away from home. Before our daughter was born, I went with him to all games he scouted, but now it is too difficult to take her all the time, although we do go some. I am getting used to the idea that Jim will be gone during the basketball season at least three or four nights a week, but Tollie can’t understand it. When she was little she called her daddy Bye-Bye because that is about all we got to say to him.

Roachdale Hawks Lose To Pittsboro, 83-69

Coach Carl Treece of Roachdale threw his platoon system at Pittsboro last night at the Hawks’ gym, but the Burros would have none of it and in retaliation had a different player in each quarter spark them to an 83-69 win. But it took an injury to Hawk center Earl Harvey midway in the third quarter and the hot hand of Pittsboro’s Baldauf and Kenny Carter to send Roachdale to their sixth straight loss and the Burros to pick up their fourth triumph of the year. Before Harvey left the game, be kept the error-prone Hawks within striking distance of the victors with 25 points, and his absence under the bucket spelled doom for the Hawks, as Carter and Baldauf went to work with eight points each to turn the closed game into a rout. Harvey left with the Burros holding a 50-49 edge at the 4:22 mark of the third quarter and before the Hawks could turn around, Pittsboro had reeled off 12 consecutive points before Bob Blaydes sank a free throw with :16 seconds remaining in the third quarter, and the quarter closed 62-50, Pittsboro on top. In the first quarter, marred by numerous ball-handling errors and ragged floor play, Harvey paced the Hawks to an 18-16 lead, with 12 points while Doug Alexander kept the Burros in the game with nine points. But in the second quarter, Pittsboro put a little more polish on their play and led by Obenchain’s 12 points, rallied to forge into a 39-36 spread at intermission. Harvey was still doing a yeoman’s job for the Hawks with six tallies, but the 26 floor errors committed by his team during the first half play offset his fine performance. Then after the fateful third quarter, Bob Clampitt tried to rally the Hawks and on two interceptions by him, narrowed the gap to four midway in the final stanza, but Carter took command for the Burros, and found himself all alone for three quick buckets to ice the contest Harvey led all marksmen with his 25 and Bob Clampitt chipped in with 13. The Burros had a well-bal-anced attack, led by Obenchain’s 20 before he fouled out Next in line was Carter with 19, and Alexander and Baldauf with 17 each. Roachdale outshot their visitors, sinking 26 fielders in 64 tries for 40 per cent but didn’t get as many flings. Pittsboro dumped in 33 field goals in 83 attempts for 39 per cent The Hawks led in rebounding 6046. Roachdale closes their season with New Market, Friday.
