Tiger Cubs Edge Black Cats Finish Second In WIC
Tiger Cub Terry Ross sank two foul shots with 10 seconds remaining last night to give the Greencastle Tiger Cubs a pulsating 65-63 hard earned victory over the Terre Haute Gerstmeyer Black Cats. But it took a herculean effort from Mike Troyer and Pete Norris to wrap up the Cubs’ 15th win of the year. Troyer finished the night with 25 points and all of the Cub field goals in the final stanza. Norris will probably wake up this morning six inches taller as he spent 28 of the 32 minutes three feet off the floor snagging rebounds. During the other four minutes, he was dumping in 16 points. With 2:01 remaining in the Mutest and the Cubs leading 61-59, Troyer was fouled by Terry McGee, he missed the one and one. After Tech rebounded, Ross picked off a stray pass and the Cubs went into a stall. But with Troyer handling the ball, the referee called a jump as Troyer retained possession longer than five seconds with a defensive player within guarding distance. But instead of having the two players involved, a jump ball was ordered between the two centers.
Tech controlled the tip and Sheeley promptly dropped in a rebound shot to tie the game at 61-all with 55 seconds remaining. Troyer responded by putting the Cubs on top 17 seconds later when he popped a 15 foot baseline shot while falling out of bounds, much to the astonishment of the Tech fans. Following a missed shot, Mike Harmless snared the rebound between two Tech players and after the ball was knocked out of bounds with 12 seconds remaining in the game, Coach Sharpe called time out. Jim Craig threw the inbounds pass to Ross as he was promptly fouled by Sheeley. After Ross registered the two points to give the Cubs a four point advantage, Ken Stanley finished the scoring with a bucket at the buzzer. The game started as another easy Greencastle win. After the Cubs were leading 9-8 with 3:40 showing on the clock, consecutive baskets by Troyer, Norris, two by Craig, and another by Norris forged the Cubs into a commanding 19 to 8 count. But a three point play by Ken Stanley cut the margin to 8 at the buzzer.
The second quarter was near-1 ly even as the Cub zone forced the Black Cats to shoot from! the outside, and the Black Cats in turn, stiffened their defense and the Cubs could only convert 7 field goals in 17 tries. At the half, the Cubs were still on top by six, 37-31. During the third quarter the Cubs maintained a five to nine point advantage, and the quarter ended with the Cujps on top by six, 54-48. Troyer banged in a 20 footer in the opening seconds of the final stanza, to put the Cubs up by eight, but then seven straight points by the Black Cats cut the advantage to one at the 5:40 mark. A foul shot sandwiched in between two baskets by Troyer upped the Cub margin to six with 3:24 left, and this set the stage for the final heroics by Ross. Both teams made the same number of field goals, but the Cubs sank theirs in 67 tries while it took the Black Cats 8f attempts. The difference in the game was at the charity line as the winners connected on 9 of 15 tosses; Tech converted 7 of 15. Unofficially, the Cubs outrebounded their host, 52 to 40
with Norris credited for 21 of the total. The reserve game increased the blood pressure of the fans for the climactic varsity tilt as the Cub junior squad lost a tough overtime battle, 54-49, and with it went the WIC championship trophy. The Cubs were leading by 3 points with approximately 20 seconds to play when Tech connected on a three point play to send the contest into overtime. The Tiger Cubs wind up the season next Friday at home with a contest against Edgewood. Greencastle (65) FG FT PF Harmless 2 2 0 Norris 6 4 2 Ross 4 2 4 Troyer 12 1 2 Craig 4 0 1 J. Hot Turkey Run Clips Fillmore
Shooting .600 ball for the evening, Turkey Run handed the Fillmore Cardinals their 14th loss of the campaign, 68 to 51. But the Cardinals were right in the game until the taller visitors switched from a man to man defense to a zone and forced the Cardinals to shoot from out. Senior Mike Goodpaster tried to rally his teammates with 10 field goals but the other Cardinals couldn’t find the range. For the night, Fillmore connected on 22 field goals in 74 attempts for a dismal 29 per cent. On the other hand, the visitors racked up 28 buckets in 56 tries. Ramsey of Turkey Run, popping from the outside, led all scorers with 28 points. Fillmore has an engagement with the Clovers at Cloverdale tonight.

Roachdale’s Hawks bowed for the second time this season to guest Ladoga last night, S4-61 in a real squeaker that caught the Hawks dropping their sixth
in a row.
Ladoga sneaked by the North Putnam team earlier this season by the same three-point margin, 70-67. 'Throwing a hustling 1-2-2 zone defense against the Canners, Roachdale managed to fire their way into a half time command, 29-25, but from there on out the contest belonged to the
visitors.
Ladoga started their campaign early in the third when they capitalized on two consecutive errors by the Hawks with a couple of two point plays that put them within one, 3433. Fortunately for Roachdale, 5-11 senior Bob Clampitt didn’t let the errors bother him and blasted away with two field goals of his own to put the Hawks back into a more comfortable command. The Canners weren’t about to let up as they came charging back with three in a row. At the 59 second mark the Hawks were still in command 43-41, but 5-9 Jim Harschbarger grabbed a ball at mid-court and made good a fifteen footer that tied it at 43-43. Teammate Canada swiped the ball on the next trip down the floor and converted it into a two pointer that closed the quarter at 45-43 in favor of
Ladoga.
Trying to sneak back during the early minutes of the final period, Roachdale found their guests’ 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man defense too much for their shooting eyes and sank to a 63-55 disadvantage at the 1:45 mark. Six foot-two inch Mark Smith then re-entered the game after sitting out two quarters with a bruised shoulder and immediately dumped in a bucket. Snodgrass followed suit with two free throws on the next play and then took advantage of a floor error by Ladoga to slip in a neat twenty footer that put them within two, 63-61, at the four second mark. Coach Treece called time and sent his boys after the ball when time resumed, but 6-0 Harvey got a little anxious and was called for hacking Ladoga’s

DePauw Tigers Host St. Joseph's Pumas
Can DePauw stop the Indiana Collegiate Conference’s highest scorer? Will the Tigers move into second place in the leap? These and other related questions will be answered here tonight when DePauw tangles for the second time with St. Joseph’s Pumas. Tipoff time is 8 p.m. in Bowman Gymnasium. The man everyone will be watching—or ought to be—will be the visitors’ relatively small (6-0) Kenny Broussard. The Cincinnati Kid is swishing the ICC nets at a 27.1 clip and hitting with .515 accuracy. Broussard does other things too. Though a guard, he is 12th in ICC rebounding, picking up
an avenage of 7.8 per game. Most of the rest of St. Joseph’s scoring punch comes from the backcourt too. It reposes in 6-1 Chuck Lamm from Michigan City. Lamm is 14th in ICC scoring with a 16.3 average, just behind DePauw’s Tom McGurk. When the two clubs played at Rensselaer Dec. 20, DePauw won in an overtime 79-75. Lamm that night scored 22 while Broussard had a “bad” night with 17, hitting only eight of 25 from the field. Should DePauw win the game, it could boost the Tigers into a second place tie with Evansville in the ICC wtih a 5-4 record. Va loara iso. now 5-3.
would have to lose to Indiana State. Butler (4-4) could make it a four-way tie for second by beating up Ball State in Muncie. Elmer McCall will stick with the same starters who have won two of their last three ICC outings. All averaging better than 11 ppg., the quintet would include McGurk, Jim Jackson, Tom McCormick, Jack Hogan and Denny Barrett. DePauw, now 6-8 for the season, will entertain Wheaton College here next Wednesday night and then go to Butler for a Saturday night date.

Then in the third quarter, the test of the Clovers figured out shat Williams was trying to to and tightened up their cele>rated defense and limited Sdgewood to 13 points while
the Clovers put the game on ice with a 30 point quarter and a commanding 30 point advantage, 75-45. For the night, Williams had his best point production of the year with 32 points. The Reelsville Indians took ; a two hour journey to Williams- j port last night, but it was a j longer trip back, as the Wil-1 liamsport crew thumped the | Indians 84-57. Trying to reverse their current losing streak, the Indians started the game in a press I and a 2-1-2 zone, but their host solved it in the first eight minutes, as the Indians found themselves down 22-8. Sparked by Ray Peeler, the Indians played even ball the second quarter and trailed at halftime, 36-22. But the rebounding superiority of Williamsport paid off in the final 16 minutes for the final margin of victory. Peeler tallied his season’s average with 20 points, and Fred Wallace chipped in with 12 points. Ray took scoring honors with 22 points, followed by Hensley with 17 in the winning cause.
